If not Eliza, Who Then?

The story is Joss and Eliza met for lunch. Eliza had signed a production contract for Fox, and she wanted some feedback on the type of project she should look for.

Suppose it had happened the other way around though. Suppose Joss had the project, and he was looking for a TV actress of leading lady stature to fill the role of Echo.

The critique is Eliza is maybe not the actress to play multiple roles. OK...who is then?

I thought Eliza did great in the opening ep myself. I'm trying to think of another TV actress who could have done it better. It's not coming to me.
 
I thought SMG would be great as Echo. Buffybot skills. But, that would never actually happen.

Yeah, I definitely think Amy Acker could have pulled off the part of Echo. She's an incredible actress who I think could play multiple roles better than Eliza. Plus, even though Amy's absolutely gorgeous, she's not the traditional movie star sexy like Eliza is, and they might not have felt the same need to use excessive sex appeal to draw in viewers (which I think would have helped the show in the long run.) The only problem is that people would think it was just Fred/Illyria: The Sequel.

Besides the fact that she isn't a television actress, I think Angelina Jolie would have fit the role very well. You can just have a fangasm imagining the action scenes, and Anjolie doing her scrunchy kick-ass face- >:]! AND if anyone has seen her in Changeling, you know she wouldn't be solely limited to the action episodes... oh man. Someone throw some water on me, just the concept excites and angers me; Echo = Eliza!
 
I think if he hadn't used - would chosen be a better word..? Heh...- I'm not 100% sure who he would have used, but I don't think he would have just stuck to using actresses he's used in his other projects. I think he'd have branched out a little, found someone new - not new to acting, just to the JossVerse.
 
In terms of non-Jossverse TV actresses, I have a few faves. Of course, as soon as I typed that, their names all fled from my brain.

AH! They're back. Okay. My top two choices may not be in the right age bracket (one is older and one is younger), but I think they have the acting chops to pull off multiple personality infusions whilst still retaining a sense of cohesion. One is Mary Louise Parker, a terrific actress whose quirky, nuanced performances always keep me believing. The other is America Ferrera, whose acting I've enjoyed ever since I first saw her touching and realistic performance in Real Women Have Curves. Both ladies have proven their rather stunning range, although I do think that Mary Louise Parker generally adds more depth to her roles. Both are also well-known enough to headline a primetime show... which might be why they're already doing so.

I'm a big fan of Daytime TV, though, so I have to suggest some less famous actresses whose chops I greatly admire. First up: Kirsten Storms. I first saw her alongside Raven Symone as Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century while I was babysitting for some kids who had the Disney Channel. Later, she moved to Daytime as Days' sweet Belle Black and then as GH's misunderstood Maxie Jones, who is a bit of a bitca, but somehow manages to make you love her. I also like Kimberly McCollough, Rena Sofer, Tamara Braun, and Sarah Brown. Of all of these ladies, I think Sarah Brown would be the best, as she has a little bit of action experience (from VR Troopers) and can play anything from sultry seductress to villain to victim without missing a beat. Her strong characters are usually invested with a palpable sort of vulnerability and her weak character have a shining inner strength, so I think she'd have the versatility for the role while managing to keep echo human.
 
I actually see Eliza doing Echo WAY before Amy Acker. Maybe you guys love amy but shes fairly one dimensional (some rabid AA fan is gonna quote Illyria to me) but i stand by that statement.

As i said in another thread, critics are stupid when it comes to the Dollhouse show and what is needed to pull it off. The role of Echo doesn't require someone to be able to pull off different roles as much as it needs someone to pull off the ONE (Echo) really well.

Lets say Echo is a kung-fu master one day, and a teacher the next. Who's to say they both cant have the same 'personality' just with different memories defining their actions... ie.. the Dollverse we've just been introduced to. Eliza is very talented and can see her pulling off Dollhouse for THIS very reason.
 
Amy Acker, but Its more believable with Eliza beacuse she has the body for it. If that makes sense.
 
Does it have to be a woman? Because I'd love to see James Marsters in the role :biggrin: (okay maybe not that role EXACTLY, him being a guy and all). He certainly has the acting skills to pull it off if you ask me. Plus, I'd like to see him in a starring role again. He's far too good an actor to only get tiny guest appearances.

But fangirlish dreaming aside, I'm satisfied with Eliza. It may be a bit early to say for sure yet, but I've certainly no problems with her. She hasn't exactly blown me away either though (but that doesn't happen very often anyway)

The body for what? The fight scenes? The seduction scenes? The... whatever else someone might need a programmable personality for scenes?

Amy Acker is tiny, but there's nothing saying a tiny chick can't have great range in her acting. I mean, she sold the fight scenes as Illyria as well as the tough transitions between Illyria and Illyria-posing-as-Fred scenes. Acting is about one's body to some extent, but only to the extent that you can control your body and use it to express emotions and motivations. A talented actor should be able to sell a personality regardless of size.

I got a little riled up there. Oops. Can you tell I'm a tiny chick? Hehe.

Lol i meant that for the fight scenes but yea she did prove that she can pull it off. just feel as though after seing the promos and stuff with Eliza that its her role now. I cant get that image out of my head. Anywhoo i wasnt trying to hate on Amy because i love her. And i think Eliza is just as tiny as Amy i think . Amy is just taller qand more skinnier.
