In the great curtain close of 2001, Buffy kissed Spike because her feelings were literally forced out in song. It was impossible for her to push them down any more. Without a song, it seems Buffy probably would have worked harder to hide any romantic feelings. And everything else that happened in their relationship in season 6 really stemmed from that kiss. So if she wasn't forced into action, how would are blonde heroes have gotten together?

I agree. That's not exactly the question. Sorry if I wasn't clear. I just mean if the song hadn't given them the opportunity to kiss, when and how would they have gotten together.

Pretty much agree with this. It was going to happen with or without the song in OMWF. As @Spuffy freak said, they kissed once the spell was lifted, so it was their free choice with no magic involved.

I actually think it could have happened in any of the previous episodes and it actually had a pretty slow build up (which actually begins in S5's Intervetnion, but that's just me 😀) I think the audience could see was going to happen when Spike saw Buffy walking downstairs in Bargaining.

Not just you, it definitely began in intervention
For me on Fool For Love there´s definitely sexual tension between them and from there it was a matter of time before it happened
 
As for me, personally, I would have liked the first kiss to have been between Joan and Randy, just as the spell was being broken in "Tabula Rasa," a sort of reenacting of the "Lips of Spike" scene from "Something Blue," but with pleasant undertones, rather than disgust. In effect, Joan and Randy are kissing, then Buffy and Spike realize what has happened, say, "To hell with it," and keep right on kissing, to the rising music, and the rising...music.

I see what you're saying but the tabula rasa kiss was so beautiful to watch I wouldn't want to lose it
 
If OMWF hadn't occurred, I imagine it would have happened on some night when Buffy goes to visit Spike and lets her guard down some. She had already been visiting him a lot prior to OMWF, so I figure a few more visits and she would have eventually let her desire takeover.

I do think they would have eventually gotten together just based on the tension between them in S6 before the musical, but I do wonder how long it would have taken. I totally agree with you that OMWF pushed her forward and let her feelings out, which she had been trying to deny up until that point. After the OMWF kiss, there was no pushing back her desires anymore.

...or maybe we would have just skipped the kisses entirely and jumped right into the events of Smashed. That would have been a shocker haha

As everyone else has said
Since Fool For Love Spuffy had been building & it would've happened in OMWF or not without the song but if it didn't happen in OMWF I would've said it would've happened in Smashed

I would have liked both kisses, what if Joan and Randy would have kissed and then the spell is broken, Buffy leaves and Spike goes after her on the Bronze and ends with a Spuffy kiss
