If Sarah had known beforehand what an impact that the role of Buffy would have on her acting career, both bad and good, do you think that she might have had second thoughts? If she isn't totally typecast as that sort of character, she comes very close to it, which has had to contribute to the less than stellar success rate that she has had with every other part that she has played since, including two series that didn't last.
 
Sarah should have a conversation with William Shatner. He has 222 movie / TV series appearances as well as additional stage performances but he is remembered mainly for starring in the last 79 of the 80 episodes of Star Trek from 1966 to 1969 plus some of the derivative movies. His career started in 1951. I have not heard of Sarah actually looking for more work and I think the gruelling pace of being the lead character for seven years may have soured her on television stardom. I have not heard of her attempting to be a writer and she has only two producing credits. Her current net worth is estimated as $14 million and she has two young children, so I don't see her being a lead character in an hour-long weekly program - she needs the time rather than the money. Something like "The Crazy Ones" with a half-hour format and not being the lead seemed to suit her just fine.

Without Buffy, she would have been another daytime soap actress no one had heard of. If Shatner could overcome Star Trek, Sarah should be able to overcome Buffy if she really wanted to be considered for other parts. She has 50 acting credits since her start in 1983, so I think she has arranged her life to her satisfaction so far.

I don't think the other series not working was due to typecasting, I think it was due to them not being very good. To the best of my knowledge there is no 'bad' associated with Buffy for her. Some people wear old series like an albatross, but from everything I know she does not seem to be one of those.

I, like Reignyboy, think its a matter of her simply putting family ahead of career.
 
There's a tiny percentage of actors who will do any better than Sarah has with their careers. Pots of money, able to choose projects that suit her life, well loved and much acclaimed long running series, a handful of movies. You'd be absolutely barking to trade that in for the off chance that something better might come along.
 
If she had known... I think she would've quit sooner and cashed in on her recognition to get other projects. But I don't think she would've opted out of Buffy.

She wanted to quit sooner, but she decided to cash in with Buffy instead of other projects. If I recall correctly she originally wanted to be done with it after three seasons.. then it was after the 5th.

Yeah, hence - if she knew how it all would play out - I think she would have quit after season 3 or 5.

But I dont think it played out any differently than she wanted. It played out the way she wanted it to. Or do you mean show-wise? The way the last few seasons played out and her not having a say in the process?

I mean that I think that she basically got better offers from other sources around season 5, whereas around season 7 they were drying out. So if she had to do it again, the last two seasons might not seem worth it compared to other options.

I just don't think that was really a concern. I mean she turned down movie roles after Buffy ended because she wanted to spend more time at home. If she had any regrets it would have been being locked into All My Children because that's when she got her biggest offers.

Maybe. I think there's a difference though between the time BtVS took and the time various movie projects would've taken... meaning she wouldn't have needed that desire to spend more time at home, because she would already have had it... But whatever. Agree to disagree.

She actually had more time at home and more work working on Buffy than she would have movies. Working on Buffy she could go home everynight.
But working for seven years as #1 on the callsheet allowed her to put away (hopefully) a sizeable chunk of change that THEN allowed her to stay at home when she chose.

Though I do agree with you that in hindsight Sarah might have left a year or two earlier to try and get some of those bigger movie roles and distance herself from Buffy. Just my personal belief based on nothing of substance lol, but I feel like Sarah got the life she wanted and had made the choices she did in order to get it.

I just don't think there were necessarily there then. But I do think it's this "I feel like Sarah got the life she wanted and had made the choices she did in order to get it."
I just think by the time Buffy came around she had been in the business a long time and knew exactly what she wanted and expected from it. She had to turn down major roles already because of AMC, so I think she was just looking for the stability and paycheck and work. She always seemed like a 'professional' actress to me.

True, though Freddie Prinze Jr pointed out in some interview that she made more money doing Maybelline adds for a year or two, than she made for her whole Buffy run... It's not like she's starving obviously, she seems very sensible with her money and all, but if she put a way a chunk it's probably because of that sense, not necessarily earning capabilities on BtVS.

Oh I agree, I don't think she has regrets per say, I just think there are things in all of our lives that we might have tweaked a little, if we know the outcome 🙂
 
Well, advertisers pay a lot more, so that doesn't really mean anything. There's a reason actors started doing commercials which used to be looked down upon by Hollywood. 🙂
 
She'll probably make more from her newest business than from acting anyway.
 
I think she tried to run from Buffy for a few years. As I recall, she made it clear that she didn't want to talk about that show in interviews. It's only in the last few years that she has come full circle to embrace the character.

She did have it rough - anyone who plays an iconic character does. And eventually they do embrace the character they try to shy away from. That said, without Buffy Maybelline would have no interest in her
