Assuming that "Seeing Red" hadn't happened or, if it had happened and Spike hadn't left town, what do you think his reaction to Buffy being shot would have been?

Personally, I believe that, chip or no chip, Spike would have caught and dismembered Warren long before Willow would have had time to go dark, and THEN, in honor of Buffy's memory, he would have headed off to Africa to get his soul.

Spike's chip would have stopped him from doing that to Warren though.

Buffy got shot during the day so Spike wouldn't have heard about it till after Buffy was healed by Willow in the hospital, at which point I think Spike would have just tagged along like he normally did.

Personally I think if Spike stayed Willow would have ended up frying him or staking him somehow. I believe even when she was at her darkest somewhere inside she was holding back against Buffy, Giles etc. but she would have turned Spike to dust right away.

Personally, I'm glad Spike wasn't around for this. I thought it was more fitting that it was Xander there with her through it all. It was a human that committed the act, so it felt more fitting to me that her human friend be there by her side through it, if that makes sense...
Spike's chip would have stopped him from being able to do anything to Warren, anyway... But yeah, I'm sure he definitely would have tried.

Spike was very much irrelevant to the plot at that point. Willow would not have noticed him being there or not. She was kind of having her existential crisis, you know. Kind of one in lifetime event. It was not his showtime.

I don't think the chip could've stopped him.

I'm glad it was Xander too. Her friend through it all, is there for her, mending ties at that moment, when she's almost fatally wounded. It meant a lot for Xander to be the one covered in her blood, instead of Spike. I think it was symbolic of their friendship. No matter what, he's there for her when she needs him.

And though Spike would've tried to hurt Warren, Buffy made it clear that wasn't what she wanted, and Spike wouldn't have been able to anyhow.

I think that if somehow Spike foudn out that Warren shot Buffy in the middle of the day, he would have grabbed ablanket, thrown it over himself, then ran into the sunlight to fnd Warren, then he would be willing to endure all the neurological pain to kill Warren

you're probably right!

Undoubtedly, Spike would have definitely tried to kill Warren. If the chip had prevented him from it, he would have had someone else do it.

Agreed, see above. How do you think, though, that Willow would have felt about that? Seems she'd have been angry that Spike would have gotten to Warren first. Also, what would have been Buffy's reaction? Even though Warren shot her and killed Tara, I doubt she'd have wanted Warren killed.

Interesting questions. Possibly, just at a guess, Willow would have been royally ticked off at Spike for beating her to Warren, On the other hand, there's a slight chance that she MIGHT have been so grateful to him that she would have given him the information that he needed to find the cave demons in Africa and regain his soul, something that was apparently beyond her capabilities, otherwise, she would have done so with Angel, rather than simply re-invoking the gypsies' curse. (And, once more, I emphasize that this is only a possibility, and a relatively slight one, but it would serve to keep the element of Spike's having a soul in Season 7 intact) That would have kept him away from Sunnydale all summer, allowing Buffy to recover from her gunshot wound.

By the time that Spike returned at the beginning of Season 7, he could have easily invoked the Angelus/Angel rule, making him not answerable for killing Warren the year before, because it was the soulless monster who did that, not the ensouled hero who returned. That would leave Season 7 to proceed pretty much the same as it actually did.

(Hey, you asked. That's like inviting a vampire into your home. Once the invitation is given, there's no telling what's liable to happen)

No, I love this theory!

There's no way Willow would have been grateful, she would have wagged her finger and turned Spike to dust.

It's not like with Warren dead her anger was over, after killing him she tried to destroy the world, I can't even imagine a scenario where she finds Spike standing over Warrens body, suddenly her hair and eyes got back to normal. "oh thanks for that Spike, here's a map to your soul..."

She would have destroyed him, and continued on to destroy the world.

Since the writers were so intent on getting Spike his soul, I see him at some point trying to protect Buffy (and everyone else) from BlackWillow and her deciding to say "fine...if you want Buffy so bad, I'll make you what she wants" and then cursing him with a soul to both punish him and to try to incapacitate him...
