If the Knights hadn't interfered in 'Spiral'...

Buffy goes on the run in 'Spiral', only to have the RV toppled during the fight with the Knights of Byzantium. Do you think they would've been able to escape from Glory had the Knights not interfered? (Just for the record, I think if they hadn't summoned Ben, Glory would've gotten them anyway since they were trapped in the shelter. If they had run off successfully... that's a different story, hence this thread.)

Maybe? No, I don't think so. Glory can use a spell to locate Dawn and she can be extremely fast on foot as seen in "Tough Love", it's Ben that stops her. Of course, she can't fly. Buffy could simply take Dawn and the gang and get on a plane to Australia or whatever. Makes sense, right?

And that's why we obviously can't have that 'cause this is "BtVS" and nothing makes sense.

I never understood just why Buffy saw any need in taking the others along when she tried to get away from Sunnydale. Spike, certainly, since, as she pointed out, besides her, he was the only one who had any chance of protecting Dawn from Glory. Willow had already proven that no amount of human generated magic would do more than make Glory mad, so she and Tara were useless, and it goes without saying that Xander and Giles would have been just one step beyond totally useless.

What Buffy SHOULD have done was to take Dawn and Spike in one direction, then send the others in two or more other directions, leaving false trails for Glory and at least increasing, if not assuring, her chances of getting away cleanly, while endangering her friends not one bit more than they were by all staying together. They might have even been safer, since the only way that the Knights of Byzantium were able to pose any problem whatsoever was because the RV was so slow. Horses, noble beasts that they might be, have no chance whatsoever of catching a speeding car, and without them being able to injure Giles, there would have been no reason to have to call Ben, which was the only way that Glory was able to find Dawn in the first place.

Honestly, if Joss would just ask me for advice before he makes these horrible blunders, Buffy's life would be much less complicated.

No, honestly I don't think she could have run away even without the meddling of the Knights. Glory was pretty dim but she was more or less a juggernaut and once she found out that Dawn was the key I don't think anything could have stood in her way for a long time, not even Buffy on the run.

Completely agree, would have made a lot more sense and it would have been way smarter of Buffy.

Yes, I think they could have gotten away. The Knights of Byzantium, useless jerks that they are, screwed things up pretty mightily. If they hadn't interfered then Giles never would have been injured and Ben never would have been called. Total wrench.

I think that Buffy and company probably could have evaded Glory long enough for the spell to pass. At the very least they could have gotten themselves down to L.A. to team up with Angel, Wes and the rest, which given that they literally had nowhere else in the world to go, is probably where they were heading. A combined force of the Scoobies and Angel Investigations probably would have been able to defeat Glory, or at least stand with her.

I don't recall Glory being able to instantly locate Dawn, but I could be wrong about that. I'm sure, just given the fact that she's a god, Glory would have been able to do something to find her (she was pretty dumb though), but united with Angel I think they could have held her off.

Season 5 was not the season where the commonsense of the scriptwriters prevailed. The scriptwriters kept writing themselves into a corner, and the only way out was for Buffy to show everyone that she was crap as a general.
ie,. Buffy showed how not to protect Dawn; try to escape in the slowest vehicle available, and take as many people as possible along for the ride.
It may have made the episode something to watch, but not what a good general would have done.
As was said before, had the escape party consisted of Spike, Dawn and Buffy in the car Spike suggested. They could have done it, but it would have been boring to watch. Although the thought of Spike driving the Porsche, singing ' I Did It My Way ' (Buffy and Dawn may have actually wanted to give in).

I did like the concept of the Knights of Byzantium though, it gave me so much to write about. I'm not suggesting they existed as they were in the story, but there is a slim possibility that there was a part of the armies of Byzantium (of the Byzantine Empire) that was known as The Knights of Byzantium. I mean, the army did have mercenaries.

Which made me think of Angel driving the Porsche, I can't seem to get my head around the notion of Angel singing Oh Mandy though.

Guys, you do realize that Spike is beyond useless most of the time? Taking Willow is a far better idea because of her nifty little teleportation spell but more importantly, she can survive direct sun light exposure. What's Spike going to do if Glory attacks during the day? Well, nothing obviously, like during the Knights' attack.

Willow had already proven that no amount of human generated magic would do more than make Glory mad

So what? Nobody can hurt or even stop Glory, not Spike, not even Buffy. That's why Buffy needed a god hammer, right? Willow on the other hand can make Glory go away, teleport the bitch to Ethiopia or whatever.

The hammer belonged to a troll, Anyanka's ex. The teleportation was done by Willow and Tara.
Wait Willow was able to use barrier spells effectively on Glory Willow was a better choice then Spike
But oh well whats done is done nifty car chase and all that

Yeah, it's funny how Buffy's battle planning fluctuates from fight to fight. I mean, she handled The Judge and The Mayor brilliantly. Major, nigh-unstoppable big bad on the horizon? Can't win hand-to-hand? No problem. Blow em' up. I mean, why didn't she try that with Glory, or with Caleb in the vineyard during S7? I don't really think about it when I'm watching the episodes (which is a good thing), but reflecting on it now, she could have mapped that out a bit better. Between her and Willow I'm pretty sure they'd be able to get their hands on whatever they need.

However, at the same time I realize that if Buffy solved every powerful problem by grabbing a rocket launcher or lighting up some C4, that would get a bit repetitive. Still, there are ways to explain away options like that.

I'm guessing that she kept the entire gang with her because she assumed Glory would target them if she left with Dawn, and that with her she had a better chance of protecting them. Clearly, that wasn't the case. If she hadn't been heading to L.A. though to team up with Angel, that would have just been stupid. They never specify where she was heading, but logically that's the only place she could have gone.

If we're talking major wrenches here though, the biggest should probably go to the monks who created Dawn in the first place. I get that they had to create an embodiment for The Key and all, but wouldn't they have been better served by making The Key into some rock instead of a teenage girl and burying it out in the desert somewhere? Glory never would have found it. But again, I get that that wouldn't have been the most viewer-friendly option. Still, off the top of my head they could have said that only a human body could contain The Key's energy or something like that.

Yep, those monks were a bit thick, can't you imagine them saying, 'I know lets make the key a sister for the slayer, she only lives a few blocks away'. Were they playing 'who has the silliest idea'?
I love the fact Buffy goes for the rocket launcher and that it can be super effective
Thats just extra iceing on a great cake

This one episode, IIRC, mentions how the monks were convinced that they could use the key for something good and didn't want it to get lost, which is why they had the slayer protect it. OTOH, maybe they could only give it the form of a human and Glory didn't know that.

If Buffy had left anyone behind Glory would have killed them. If she caught up with any of them leaving false trails, she would killed them out of anger. Glory had the entire gang followed around to locate the key so she knew who Buffy cared for and would have easily tortured and murdered them. Also why does everyone say Spike was such a big help? He didn't stand even the tiniest chance against Glory. Sure he was extra man power, but he would have gotten annihilated by Glory given the chance. If the gang did separate it should have been Willow, Buffy and Dawn.

Yeah but the Monks said they needed to make the key a necessity for the slayer to protect and as we see, Buffy would give up her life to protect her family. Here's a bigger wrench though, Glory's minions seemed to know that the ritual was going to be a bloodletting, wouldn't that automatically point to a human vessel or at least something living? lol. How were they gunna open that portal with a rock or something?
