I posted a similar thread a couple of years ago, but it's either long gone or too well hidden for me to find...

Regardless of the particular ship you support, how would it effect your enjoyment of the series if one or both members of your chosen couple wound up in a real, serious, long term relationship with someone else?

I think it depends on how it's treated. If it's boring, or unrealistic, then you aren't going to support it. But if it makes sense as part of the show, then I don't think I'd mind. Though long term & serious is kind of boring by definition. How would we know at the time whether it was going to be long term? 😉
 
Depends on who they ended up with. Is it an enjoyable character? Are they an enjoyable couple to watch? Are the characters still themselves?

Those questions play the biggest role in whether or not is still enjoy a show if my favored ship were to move on.

You know, I can't actually think of a show (off he top of my head) that a ship completely ruined.

When Maddie and David actually became a couple. Not sure if that counts as they were always 'together' but not really together, until they got together and then you hated that they were together.

I have permanent second lead syndrome so i am used to disappointnent. But in Spuffy's case I'd be irrationally sad.
 
Of course it would depend on who the someone else was but....I think I'd be fine if Buffy had a partner worthy of her. Heck, after Angel was further developed, I could have reconciled myself to that. Just not the way he was on BTVS.

I'd find it harder with Spike, because part of my lust addled brain always wants him for myself. 😛

I wouldn't have minded seeing him in some other stormy relationships though. Where he wasn't nearly as much love's bitch as he was with Buffy. I didn't like sniveling puppy Spike.
He and Harmony were so pretty together but she was too dim witted for anything other than a shag.
 
I usually like the person who didn't get the love interest (or who had the them but gave them up selflessly, like Angel) more than the person who actually gets the love interest because of some arbitrary decision by the writers.
For example in Smallville I always rooted for Chloe over dull-as-toast Lana, at least until Lois came along.
And say, if Spike ended up with Buffy in the end I wouldn't feel sorry for Angel, I'd just feel sorry for Buffy. 😛

I dont really see how you can say he gave her (Buffy) up selflessly! He was getting his on show out of it for pete sake. It's more selfish, than less.

But more importantly, if he stayed on Buffy.. the show I mean.. do you honestly think he would have the sex again. At least on his own show he got to have the sex. Multiple times! What a hedonist.

Hey, who am I to argue with the professional writers of a TV show?!

I was always an Apollo/Starbuck shipper in Battlestar Galactica, so when she met Sam, I was at first a bit irked, but then I grew to actually like Sam. It never affected my enjoyment of the series at all, but in my head Lee & Kara were always meant to be.

But I digress. As long as it felt organic and not forced, it wouldn't affect my enjoyment of a show to see someone end up with someone else. Like I probably wouldn't mind Briley so much if I actually felt like there was some chemistry between them.

Meh, I'm used to disappointments. Gay ships never end up together on TV. Blame Joss, he's the one that started it with killing off Tara. Since then, either someone dies, or someone miraculously is cured of the gay. I can't think of the last time that one of my ship actually ended up together. So I've just accepted the fact that my ships are never meant to be.

I like my Aurelian guys - they can get together with anyone, but that anyone is gonna die eventually.
 
I enjoy BtVS no matter who Buffy is with. I long for her to be with Spike in a way that at times seems surprisingly intense even to myself, however I would still follow the story even if Spuffy was a for sure no go. Oddly, now that they are together and looking pretty strong in S10 I actually feel more nervous than before that arc came back. Before I always hoped that things would work out, now I'm pretty sure Joss is going to kill Spike just to mess with me.
 
I have no idea, because I've never shipped other couple, so that has never been a factor for me.

The show was great, and the comics are still better - so far. I believe that the most important is how things are written, and if Spike still has the respect and consideration in the future as he has had up to now, I will be OK with whatever happened with the ship (or maybe not... but I think it will not spoil the whole thing for me) - and I say Spike, because it's obvious that Buffy will always be the heroine (Joss will never do to her what he did to Angel).

This is an interesting question.

I'm not gonna lie, I'd be pretty disappointed if Spike and Buffy didn't end up together in the end. I believe so strongly in them. If they don't end up together, well they should have. Would it effect my enjoyment of the series? Probobly not too much. Now,however, if Buffy ended up with Angel, considering everything he's done to her...I'd be pretty disgusted.
