If the show hadn't been renewed for a second season...

If it had only been the first season? Hell no! The first season was, by far, the worst. Sure, it was fun to watch, but it didn't have anything even close to the depth and memorability that the second through seventh seasons had. Still, if it had only been the first and second seasons, I do think it'd probably have the cult status that a show like, oh, say, Firefly has today.

The thing is I think I love the first season because I've seen the rest of the series and I can appreciate it not because of the Monster of the Week stuff or even the arc, but because of the characters I've come to love. I enjoy watching S1 for their interactions and the funny and touching moments. But if season 1 was all I'd ever had I'm not sure I could have grown as attached to the charcters and so their interactions in S1 might not be as enjoyable to rewatch as they are now... if that makes sense 🙂
 
I think I woul dstill have been a cult classic not on the level it is now. It was a lot harder back then for forgotten shows to become popular (no net, not much TV came out on VHS) for those factors I doubt it would have had the following of Firefly. I could see Buffy become a pretty popular boot leg had it been canned after the 12 eps.
 
I would definetly still love season 1 for what it is because there's quite a few episodes that I fell in love with from season 1 as soon as I first saw them. Welcome To The Hellmouth, The Harvest, Angel & Prophecy Girl are all my favorites. But I'm glad that didn't happen because I couldn't imagine missing out on the amazingness that was the whole series!!

So do you think you'd still be a huge fan of Buffy it was only that single season, or do you think you're appreciation of season one is influenced by the later seasons, and you're just looking at the show as a whole?

Yes, I mean successful. Also lol I leave my house all the time, but everyday I watch my Buffy/Angel boxsets and go through about 10 eps. (between the two shows) a day.
 
I don't think I would call myself as Buffy-fan in case I only ever seen Season 1. after Season 2, sure, but I don't know. Maybe, if I had the chance to re-watch the whole season (and not seen it on tv like I did) I woul dhave like dit and watched it several times. But I wouldn't have been obsessed.

Season 1 felt like a feel good movie witha bit of everything in it, but I'm not sure if one season would have been enough for me to fall in love with the characters. I want to say yes, but I'm not sure.
 
I often go back and watch shows based on Actors i enjoy so I suppose it all depends on just how successful the actors would have been. I think both SMG and AH would have found work after S1 so I think some way or another i would have seen S1 despite not watching it on its first run.

That said, I doubt I would have thought much of it, I would have thought it a fairly decent show (for its age) and moved on.
 
It definitely would not have had a Firefly-sized fan following. Despite being only slightly longer than Buffy's first season, Firefly had some benefits Buffy would not have had (assuming it had been cancelled after one season). Firefly was cancelled around the time short-lived series could find an audience on DVD. You didn't really see TV show boxsets at all around the time of Buffy's first season. In addition, people were willing to check out Firefly on DVD because they were fans of Buffy/Angel. Being the first show that Joss created, Buffy wouldn't have had that benefit. People wouldn't have said, "oh, I've got to check out this DVD. It's from that guy who wrote a couple episodes of Roseanne!" So, no, it wouldn't have had a Firefly-sized cult following. I'm sure a few select people would have remembered it fondly, but they would be few and far between.

I'd like to think that it would have been remembered. At least when discussing Sarah Michelle Gellar's (Oops, I mean Prinze's :rolleyes2) career. I just finished re-watching Season 1 and I was surprised to say that watching Prophecy Girl gave me goosebumps. Especially Buffy's scene in the library with Giles and Angel. Yes, the show had a few weak episodes, but the main ones that contributed to the season's arc were all great, IMO. So, would it be as big as some other 1-Season shows? Maybe not, but Buffy would definitely have been remembered by a big enough group.
 
I don't think it would. For a show named something as cliche' as Buffy The Vampire Slayer, people would be bouned to see it, see that it only has 12 episodes, and no charachter development. And laugh.

And apart from that the movie that came before was ridiculed, I think the show (which was under scrutiny for it being the sequel to a film that was a mess) would just be discarded as 'that show that tried and failed at creating a masterpiece out of a disaster. And that the concept of a girl slaying vampires would just not work.
