If the world was a village of 100.

I was reading something i found interesting and thought id share it with you.
If you could reduce the worlds population to a village of 100 people, with all existing ratios staying the same, it would look like this:

The village would have 60 Asians, 14 Africans, 12 Europeans, 8 Latin Americans, 5 from USA and Canada, and 1 from the South Pacific.

51 would be male, 49 would be female.

82 would be non-white, 18 would be white.

67 would be non-christian, 33 would be christian.

80 would live in substandard housing.

67 would be unable to read.

50 would be malnourished, with 1 dying from starvation.

33 would be without access to a safe water supply.

39 would lack access to improved sanitation.

24 would not have any electricity(and of the 76 that do, most
would only use it for light at night)

7 people would have access to the internet.

1 would have a college education.

1 would have HIV.

2 would be near birth, 1 would be near death.

5 would control 32% of the entire worlds wealth, all 5
would be US citizens.

33 would be receiving - and attempting to live on - only 3% of the income of 'the village'.


Nice world we live in eh? Oh well, as long as the westerners

I just found interesting, i suppose it wasnt really about having a discussion or anything, id never really
thought about it before, but when i seen it i was like 'these are unbelievable stats, especially the
elecricity bit and money bits'. It just made me realize how lucky ive got it.

It's interesting to read, and quite a bit sad, unfortunately for the most part...the average person can't do anything about it, really. Sure, you can make donations and stuff but people here have their own drama to deal with, and don't really have the means to help strangers halfway around the world.

But the world has always had people who've had it way worse than others, and I think it always will. It's sad, but it's life.

Now that's not even possible. If there are only 5 from USA/Canada (so implying there's at least one canadian; otherwise it would've been only the US), how can all 5 that control the wealth be American citizens? Making no sense.
Also, don't really see the point of this. It's just like statistics (the hundred factor representing percent), just a lot more vague since you can only work with integers.

First off it´s not like Europe has more than double the population North America has (which the numbers 5 and 12 implies) so it´s wrong from the start. I do however like this kind of stuff, even if the the numbers are wrong. It gets you thinking and that´s always good. I also like the following quote even though I have absolutely no idea if it´s even close to being true or not.

I dont think Americans are more homicidal by nature. Theres much higher murder rates worldwide than the USA.
Americas just like a massive Ireland. Theres alot of gun deaths here, and in Scotland, instead of guns, its knifes.
Then, look at the killings in Africa and Asia.... No Kinslayer, it aint just America, its the world. They are all homicidal.

So it's the laws then? And I'm pretty sure the proportion of knife deaths in Scotland isn't the same as the proportion of gun deaths in America.

Two of the stats stuck out at me. I thought that the world was 51% female, not the other way around. Also, 1 in 10 people in the world have HIV? If that's true, then I'm shocked.

I don't know about the first one, but I'd say the second is pretty accurate. A huge chunk of Africa is infected at this point because some of them believe that having sex with a virgin cures AIDS. Because of that, young women (as young as newborn, I kid you not) are constantly being raped, and as we know, it doesn't cure it, it just passes it on.

and the HIV thing to me does seem a bit too high, but, i wouldt be the least bit suprised if its true.
And the Scottish murder rate(especially the west) aint that far away from the American rate. I mean, its def the highest in
western Europe. So, what im saying is, the full worlds mad.

It's not a question of simple numbers as much as it is population density and culture. None of the countries you use in your comparison with the exception of Japan have the population density of the areas in the United States where the greatest number of homicides occur. Plus Japan has one of the highest suicide rates of any country in the world and their number of gangland murders is about the same as ours is. The difference is, because of their very stringent gun laws, most of their murders involve edged weapons or some sort of bludgeon.

Only 1 religion was shown because most people reading this are westerners. Most religious westerners are christian. 33% of all religion is ALOT.
And the point in this is to show what the world/people are like. I mean, i for one, never thought about this stuff in such detail. It makes for an interesting read unless you dont care how the rest of the worlds doing, which is easy to do when you aint in that position.

OH, you're WRONG AGAIN!
1.) My daughter can only just barely read, but when she couldn't she was often clicking around the boards while I was away from my desk looking at the pictures.
2.) I can't say many blind people pass through, but I assume if I sat someone down and said, "What do you think of this thread" they wouldn't have a lot of nice things to say.
3.) LOTS of numbers are written down and if you have no concept of numbers over 10 (like my daughter did) most of that mumbo jumbo wouldn't really mean much. 33 could be any amount. DUH!

And "AIN'T" is a word, just not one I'll allow you to use. That or you change where you are to HERE and then it's okay.
