If there ever is a reboot of Buffy, should Willow be lesbian from the start?

Eh, I would say her coming out should reflect the current generational experience.
 
I think an arc where she's repressed and starts out thinking she's straight, gets into a straight relationship, realizes she's not attracted to men, realizes she is attracted to women, and then comes to terms with what that means and eventually telling her friends would be a better way to go about it. Willow comes across as a bit naive and prude at the beginning of the series so to me it doesn't track that she'd be in touch and comfortable with her sexuality at a young age. Much of her story anyway is about her coming out of her shell with respect to her social standing and her progress as a magic user and demon fighter, so tying in her sexuality to her overall self discovery seems like good storytelling to me.

I think a more outgoing character being openly queer from the start (if they were going to be made queer at all) would make more sense.
 
All I'll say on that is it would probably be the only way it would be better than the original. But even that assumption comes with wariness.
 
P.S. It also depends what kind of reboot it is. The animated series, absolutely not, that's mousy first season Willow. An Rebuild of Buffy? Perhaps. My preference is "Another Road," which is where Buffy stays in LA, or lives with her father et al. Then it wouldn't matter. Rights wise, the television characters are the hardest to license, so striping it down to the film characters would be the cheapest way.
 
They'd probably make her bi at the very least to begin with as they know how big the Willow/Oz relationship was for many people.

I'm saying that, but keep in mind I'm very much against any project that would involve just redoing the same story with new actors. I want a continuation with new characters and some cameos. I don't see any reason to redo the same story when the original show is still just as great as it was then.

Also, I'm sorry, but nobody else could ever be Willow. 😉 Alyson is one of a kind.
 
I'll add that bi also works...in fact, bi works better.

But I'd want a new story with new characters. I'll overlook a lot more that way. If it's a full reboot I doubt I'll have the courage (or recklessness) to watch, at least not until others have who I trust to gauge how I'd react accurately.

I think in a reboot it's much more likely Buffy herself (and probably/possibly Faith) would be bisexual. Even on the original show there was a ton of sexual tension there and we all know Buffy had sex with a woman in the allegedly canonical comics.

I think Willow having a path from repression to fully discovering her lesbianism would be a good story that wouldn't be too redundant alongside an openly bisexual Buffy. I even think Willow's lack of attraction to men could be played up as a factor in Oz's infidelity, if they chose to revisit that relationship and how it ultimately ended.

The decision over which one it would be was almost entirely arbitrary anyway, so it should be his turn. Willow can be the straight normie.

That occurred to me as well. I know a straight guy who wished they'd gone that route the first time, but would've probably faced even greater resistance than they did with Willow.
I hate the idea of a reboot. Plus, the reboots done lately have been mostly terrible.

I think that part of the problem has been all the money thrown at mediocre writer-producer-showrunners. I think there are too many shows. The good writers have been spread too thin & it really shows lately.

I would be up for a new show, set in the Buffyverse, starting in 2024, developing new characters, having new adventures, call backs to Buffy, even guest shots by the original actors acting their current ages. That could be awesome.

Appologies to the OP. I just totally disagree with the idea of rebooting Buffy.

I don't trust distant future sequels not to **** over the originals these days,

Modern writers would have the new main character the first new Slayer called after the Slayer army was slaughtered, killing Buffy and Faith with them, Willow would have gone nuts or bad or died in a suicidal attack to avenge them and Xander's retreated into a bottle drinking himself to death
 
I thought there was a reboot, as the original players were unsuitable in this day and age, as the story lines of the original stuff were that out of date writing new episodes to be like them is doubtful. So the station executives had new scriptwriters write another series and gave it another name, Stranger Things. It did well though no where as good as the original and just as well, that sort of proves everyone here at Buffy Boards dot Com as correct!

As a lesbian, yes. But don’t be all like “oh hey guys I’m a lesbian now isn’t that cool!” That’s just pandering.

Do it like the BOOM! comics where she just hangs out with a girlfriend and everyone just accepts it and doesn’t mention it. We don’t need to live in a constant state of “this thing is different or abnormal because gay or trans or xyz”. It’s normal to be “abnormal”, and that’s something we should showcase, not neglect. 🙂

Though I think I understand why a need is felt to make such obvious, it often comes across as extremely jarring and does, I think, often work better just being there, presented as being completely normal.

Also, if Spike is back and male, Buffy should be gay. 🙂
 
Given the current zeitgeist just being lesbian or gay isn't daring enough, but I agree that if Willow were to stay lesbian just have it be from the start, casually acknowledged and not a big deal.
But having a trans character would be fresh and relevant. I nominate Spike as the most obvious candidate; you could still keep the punk aesthetic but a little skewed.
