No, I think Xander made the threat in the heat of the moment. He was upset that his best friend was in danger and he was fed up with Buffy's attitude. Plus, I really don't think Xander is dumb enough to actually try and kill Buffy....he knows he wouldn't stand a chance.

I don't think Xander would have ever tried to hurt Buffy, but I do think that he would have hated her for the rest of their lives if Willow had been killed. Xander is the king of speaking out of anger, and I think this was just another one of those times.

He said it for impact. It was the threat he thought would hurt her the most because it showed how angry he was, and how much he loved Willow.
I think moments like this appeared very often in BTVS. There is this Xander scene but there are some others which had been very similar. The scene with Dawn and Spike, for example.
They have some purposes.
They show the emotions and feelings of every character towards the other character.
They bring some voltage and drama in the story.
They make you think about the core of the statement which was in this case that Willow has a higher position for Xander than Buffy and that he blames her (for) strong allegations. It's also an evidence for their later relationship.
I really love moments like this because everybody knows that neither Xander nor Dawn could ever damage Buffy or Spike physically. But the statemant allone is enought to hurt them psychologically harder then the watcher of the show could ever imagine they could hurt them. And they show the helpless, powerless situation in which the character is.

He was threatening her in the heat of the moment: scared for Willow and fed up with Buffy's attitude. Understandable, if a little harsh.

For once, I was actually on Xander's side. Buffy should've woken up to her oblivious actions. But he wouldn't hurt her physically. He was just being Xander.

Unless Willow's death would have pushed Buffy into near catatonic, dumbfounded shock (which we know she's prone to, see S5). Zoned out, staring-into-nothingness Slayer vs. enraged Muggle? My bet would actually be on Xander, in that case.

I don't think Xander has it in him to kill someone. He would never forgive Buffy if Willow was hurt, but I don't think he'd go through with his threat.
I liked that scene as it showed that although he was in love with Buffy, Willow was more important.

Personally, I think Xander made that threat towards Buffy as a wake up call. He thought that if he showed her his compassion for Willow that she would realize what she was doing. She was putting her friends lives in danger because she was still hurting from her fight with the master. Buffy was so caught up in her own pain that she didn't realize she was abandoning the people she loved most. It's sort of the same thing when Drusilla killed Kendra. If Buffy had stayed with the group instead of going after Angel alone I bet Kendra would have had a chance of survival. Buffy tends to let her emotions get the best of her.

No...Xander isn't a killer. He was just angry. It's kind of like when Buffy tells Faith, "If you apologize to me, I will kill you." in Sanctuary. I have a hard time believing that if Faith had said, "I'm sorry B!" Buffy would have gone over there and stabbed her in her gut, again. She probably would have knocked her out or something. It was used as a figure of speech.

No, I think it's just one of those things you say in the heat of the moment. i.e. "You ruined my shirt?! I'm going to kill you!" That kind of thing.
I also think he was trying to get a major point across to Buffy: get over yourself. She was acting pretty out of line when she got back from LA and he was trying to shake her out of it. (I would also bet he was a little wound up from the "sexy dance".)

I think Xander said it in the heat of the moment and although he wouldn't have tried to kill Buffy he would have hated her and held anything that happened to Willow against her.
Personally, Xander really annoyed me when he said this. He does judge Buffy way too much.
Ignoring the fact that Buffy could kick his ass any day, I really don't think that Xander had it in him to kill anyone then.
In the beginning of season two Xander didn't really seem to me to have any friends apart from Buffy and Willow, so if Willow had of died and in retaliation he killed Buffy, his existence would become a pretty miserable one.
