My mother is watching a movie about a girl who has a mental sister (rosie o'donnel) and it made me think.

How would you be able to handle havig a mental brother or a mental sister? Would you rather them be in an institution or stay at home with your family? Basically, how do you think you would live your life differently having a mental family member?

Maybe a dumb topic, just had to ask!

My friend has a mental sister (who is incredibly sweet and i love her!) but it would deffinatly be hard to live with her (it's hard to just be around her), but i would much rather have them at home. it would be hard but i think it's horrible to put someone in an institute for that and (pardon the cliche) where they can't get the love they deserve.

Well, of course it depends on the situation and how/in what way they're mental. The ideal would of course be to have them at home, but that's not always possible unfortunately. (Anyways, to me it would be a huge difference just having a brother or a sister, whether they were mental or not, 'cause I don't.. have that.)

Well, which way do you mean when you say mental? Do you mean psychotically crazy or mentally handicapped? Because, my brother is mental and if he ever hits me again my Mom is having him put in an institutuion. I'd rather him be there too... away from me... and the knives...

Having a mental sister i could probably handle.

Having Rosie O'Donnell as a sister, now that would suck!!! :lmao:

Hahaha that was good! I agree!
It really depends on the person's situation. If they are totally unable to function and co-exist with family at home, then there is no choice but to have them institutionalized. But I would hope that it could be avoided at all costs. I would much rather have them at home, where they will be loved and cared for.

If the person was in an institution, I would make the effort to visit regularly, but sometimes life gets too busy and you can't and then everything gets screwed up.

My uncle had downs syndrome and he lived out a happy contented life until his death at the age of 40. He was never in an insititution and always had family around him, and I believe that he was much happier becuase of this. Life can be difficult for those looking after people with disabilities, but as far as I am concerned unless they are in need of constant medical care or seriously mentally unstable, they should be at home with loved ones

Could not have said it any better myself!
I AM the mental sister.

My best friend has a retarded brother, thats the closest thing to this I have had contact with. I could never see him in any kind of 'home' other then that of his family. There's nobody on Earth that knows how to take care of you more then your family.

I'm not related to anyone who is mentally ill. But I do know of someone who was in an accident some years ago, ended up brain-damaged and will never be the same again. Her family are so strong. They sold their house and bought a new one with wheelchair access and stairlifts. They treat her much the same as they did before the accident as far as they can. When it happened I didn't think they would be able to cope with it. She went into a coma and they thought that she wouldn't wake up. I saw her a few months ago in my home town. She looked well. She can hardly speak and she's going to be in a wheelchair for life. I still feel as close to her as I did before the accident. She's a human being and I couldn't imagine her being in a home or anything like that. She's still the girl that I knew before the accident. She always will be. If she were my sister I would love her more for her courage and strength.
