I'm getting slightly thread happy here, but the character quiz asked this question and I thought it was really interesting.

So, if you lost your soul, if you no longer had a conscience...who would you be?

I don't really understand the idea of soul, perhaps it's more of a religious thing, but my "soul" is not something I ever really consider.

If I had no conscience however, I think I'd be a totally different person. I'd be a total ass.

My understanding of the soul in icon form:

Wait, that renders the question pointless. Maybe a better question would be if you had no conscience who would you be?

I think I'll rephrase the title of this thread...

Yes I don't get the concept of soul either, my opinion is that it doesn't exist. But in a Buffy-ish universe I'd be like Anyanka 🙂

I don't believe in souls but yeah, I'd probably be a bit like Angelus really. I'm good at planning and manipulating and so would be able to organise my killing in a way that's almost artful.

I'd rather be Drusilla though, any excuse to be crazy 😛

I assume you mean Buffyverse soul, which I take to mean conscience.

I guess... Angelus. I like artistic refined kind of stuff, those sort of killings are cool. I wouldn't risk my life like Spike does, regardless of the adrenaline rush. Just lording my superiority over other people and destroying them sounds my type.

I'm torn between 2 concepts of souls here.

-The "you are a soul, you have a body" one, which kinda praise the idea that when your body die, your soul take over a new body being either a plant, and animal or a person. You could compare it to a mix in between the native american beliefs that everything alive has a soul and the religion (I don't remember which) in which people believe they have to pass from body to body to access to the Nirvana (which is their Heaven).

-Or another concept which would be a mix between Buffy and Supernatural (soulless Sam in season 6, for those who watch). That concept would describe the soul more as a conscience and would be what makes us different from animals and plants. But in this case, even without a soul we would remain humans, but without inhibitions...

In the first case, it would be impossible to describe who I'd be without a soul.

In the second case, I'd probably be like Drusilla. Except that I wouldn't be as freely bad. That is why I referred as soulless Sam earlier. No conscience, but I probably wouldn't go killing people everywhere. I just wouldn't have problems with killing to get what I need.

And I just realized I almost wrote a philosophy essay... So just remember this: Drusilla but less crazy XD

Ooh, good question.

Oddly enough, I think I'd be more of a Spike than an Angelus. (I'd say Drusilla, but her madness is too much a part of her character, and I'm sane by conventional reasoning.)

Going by the definition of the soul as one's moral compass, a person who loses her soul retains her morally neutral personality traits. I think in my case, the ones that would be most influential are my insecurity and romanticism - I'd be obsessed with making an identity for myself, and still believe in love despite not being able to experience it as a human would. I could see my soulless self being devoted to some kind of "eternal love" sham with another vampire, like Spike and Dru.

I think I'd also have a streak of Angelus's artistry, though. Better not think too hard about how that would come out.

I would say Angelus (Big surprise! 😛)

I'd be really manipulative, but would have a large amount of fun with it.....and be really sarcastic.

I don't know if we have souls. I only asked myself a question: If a man promise you 1000$ for your soul would I say yes? I came to the conclusion that I wouldn't. Seems as if I believe in a soul on a blurred way. Just for the case we have one I wouldn't take the offer. If I would loose my soul I could imagine to be like Faith. Stop. I know she has a soul but sometimes she acted as if she hadn't one. For example when she killed a man. "I don't care B." That was scary. I think I would react the same when I killed a man without soul. That's why I chose Faith.

I guess I'd end up an amalgamate of Vamp!Willow and Dark!Willow. There'd most definitely be a very big streak of "nothing is real except me, so lets kill a few hundred sub-creatures for relaxation and kinky fun" if I lost my soul.

I'm actually pretty glad that I do have a soul. *nervous smile and giggle*

What an interesting and extremely complicated question!!!

The issue of defining the conscience poses questions of one's identity.

When someone says something like "I would never do that" they are defining who they are based upon their perceived future behaviour.

The question becomes, how do we define the conscience and how would affect our behaviour if that element of our being were absent.

Also how does this affect our relationships and how we treat others.

This raises the difficult question of how to judge Angel and Spike without their respective souls. Can someone, by definition be 'good' without a soul and if so how and what function does it provide?

As for how I would be without a conscience? I have no idea. How I treat others is based on a feeling of empathy, which may be both biological or societal in its nature with perhaps one informing the other. A change in such behaviour might be due to drastic social changes or physiological differences.

In addition to that problem, and this has been pointed out in the verse, moral principles can be inconsistent and vary based upon differing situations and emotions.

I haven't gone into how the values we grow up affect our sense of moral identity.

So the question remains: If we rid ourselves of our conscience, then how much of 'us' is really left?

Ann Coulter...

yes I'm joking, of course I'm joking. No offense meant!
🙂

Without a conscience I think I'd be a Darla type (if we're talking vampire or vampire personality style) I think I'd be clever enough to enjoy things in the artsy way of e.g. Angelus but I think I would be foremost interested in saving my own hide in times of crisis (like being chased by someone like Holtz). Push comes to shove, no conscience, I'd probably always be looking out for my own best when it comes to choice of victim, family, partners or allies.

awesome!!!
If I didn't have a conscience...I'd be a sociopath. I'd do whatever I want, and I'd kill whoever stood in my way.

Yep. Luckily I do have a conscience...and way too much empathy.

I was secretly hoping you'd reply to this 🙂 😉

As I stated earlier in the thread, I believe we are souls and have bodies. However, I am very much open to the concept of us "constructing" our own souls/conscience based on what is deemed acceptable in society.

In the verse the soul has been used as the defining point between good and evil. In the real world I don't really believe in good and evil, but in good and bad choices. So with that in mind, the decisions we make every day are essentially constructing our "souls" or "conscience".

Also how does this affect our relationships and how we treat others.

I've been wondering to what extent does society factor in the construction of conscience. If our society did not view murder as a heinous crime, would people feel bad about it if they killed someone?

In any number of choices a person makes during their day, how many of them are sourced from the fear/awareness of how society would judge them, than out of a desire to do what one believes/feels is "right". The internet is a good barometer on this, every day you see people be aggressive, rude and abusive, in an environment that cannot be policed and so lacks any real consequences. How right or wrong it is to be abusive to another person, even one you cannot see, does not appear to factor.

That leads to a question of whether conscience actually exists, or is it merely the environment you are placed in is the "conscience" and you acting in a way that best allows you to survive there.

As for how I would be without a conscience? I have no idea. How I treat others is based on a feeling of empathy, which may be both biological or societal in its nature with perhaps one informing the other. A change in such behaviour might be due to drastic social changes or physiological differences.

I very much agree.

So the question remains: If we rid ourselves of our conscience, then how much of 'us' is really left?

I find myself wondering, are we "us" at all whilst utilising either our own personal conscience, or our collective societal conscience.

Quoted because I'm stunned how very close (though not identical - there's one point of contention that'd sidetrack this thread if I pointed it out now... so I won't 😉) this is to my view... and that's stunning, of course, because you and I usually disagree on tons of things! 😀

We do tend to do this a lot. I'm interested to hear what the point of contention is-PM me! :D
Id be Anders Breivik, or in verse terms, just Spike(as in old 1800's spike) good old murderer that he was.

Something I've always wondered...when someone loses their soul whilst becoming a vampire..is it even them? It's been said that its just a demon inside the body of the person it once was. In addition to that, it retains their memories. So if that was the case for vampires, it wouldn't really be "who you'd be" since you wouldn't be there. Trippy 😱
