I already am a champion in my own right (I have no self esteem problems here 😛 ). I got told last week by a friend that I'm an 'unsung hero'. Over the years as friends have struggled with mental illness, I've been one who helps picks them up when they're at their lowest.
I've bought bandages for a guy mate who shredded his arms to pieces from cutting and attempted to patch him back. Did the same for another cutter friend- I hate blood a lot.
Took on caring for my girlfriend at the time while she had a break down- doctor said I either care for her or she goes into a mental institution.
Ex gf got a text one night when we were still living together from an unknown number. Was a goodbye suicide message. She froze and had no idea what to do. I bombarded that number with calls and texts after quickly calling a social worker I knew asking what to do. Turns out it was her best friend who had a new number which she didn't save. She lived.
I had another suicidal friend who I thought was going to do something as she was acting odd. Jumped in my car at 9pm, drove up there (takes two hours), stayed with her for the night as she settled, she did eventually get back on her feet.
And current friend going through a depressive/suicidal patch. Made up a care package recently full of things to help her relax. I've gone over and cooked dinner a few times for her and gave her my most prized possession- my promise ring (back story- a ring I bought for myself to promise not to kill myself in my darkest time) She's grateful for me and called me her unsung hero.
The list goes on. Basically if a friend is in trouble or isn't acting right, I'm there as fast as I can be. Annoys me when I see that post going around on Facebook "Repost this if you would stay up til midnight to talk them out of suicide"
1. Takes a lot longer than that and hopefully you'll talk them into getting treatment of some sort.
2. Only til midnight?
3. What kind of person would you be if you didn't?
Anyways, if I could be a bit physically stronger, that'd be awesome.
