Illyria: Worst Character Ever?

Does anyone else think the blue-haired queen of lame would have been better suited for a Star Trek series and not for a show like AtS that, prior to bringing her in, hadn't REALLY insulted the intelligence of the fans too much?

She seems to have a lot of fans, and I'm struggling to see why. I think she was the final nail in season 5's coffin.

I'm struggling to see why you think she was an insult to the intelligence of the fans.

Plus as a huge fan of Star Trek too, I take some offence to suggestion that the characters there are an insult to intelligence.

I just thought she was a lame character, way too sci-fi, which isn't necessarily a bad thing if you LIKE sci-fi, but I don't think she "fit" in the show at all.

I think she fit perfectly and I wouldn't necessarily agree on the too Sci-Fi either, but Idon't truly disagree.

A lot of the characters could find they have Science Fiction elements but I don't think that detracts from the characters.

Amy takes the character and makes her great.

I don't think she's all that bad. I liked seeing Amy in a different role other than Fred.

Illyria was a fascinating character. Continues to be so in the Angel comics, too.

llyria does have some pretty funny lines, and she keeps Spike on his toes, which I like.

I never had a problem with Illyria. I think Amy's portrayal of her was the main reason for me liking the character. I mean I was heartbroken that Fred was gone and would have loved to have had Fred until the end, but as regards did I see Illyria as a terrible character? No, not at all.

And I don't think she was anymore sci-fi than any other character on the show and I always enjoyed her, especially as she became more human as the season went on- whether that was due to interaction or some remnant of Fred's essence is really up to the individual fan to decide.

And I still don't understand how you think she was an insult to our intelligence? I can accept you disliking her as that's personal opinion...but the intelligence comment throws me.

I really hated Illyria too, it was mainly because of how she looked, but i wasnt interested in her character at all.

I thought Illyria helped to MAKE the season; the way Illyria came into being as well was some of the best Angel moments. I thought the character would have really impressed me had the television season continued.

I enjoyed her, and really love Amy as an actress now after seeing her play the part. I just actually had wish there was a bit more about the past and the world she lived in before it came to be what it was. I had no problem with the way she looked, either.

I love Illyria. I love the relationship between her and Wesley and Spike.
There is this one episode in Angel which ends with her and Wesley commenting the whole situation, with really deep thoughs, I was fascinated.. ;_;

And you cant say she is too sci-fi because in the whedonverse nothing is what it seems on first sight. A small blonde girl fighting vampires on graves then going home and doing her homework? Or a mysterious guy who calls himself Angel turns out to be a vampire with a soul because of a gypsy curse? Tell anyone who dont know the show and see their reactions..

I think its the same with Illyria.

I actually didn't really like Fred. So it was interesting to see Amy do something new and something blue, because she did it very well. I won't go as far as saying she made the season, but I liked Illyria.
Plus, in one of the first episodes someone (I think, nay, I'm almost sure it was Spike) refered to her as a blue meanie, which I think is a reference to the Beatles film 'Yellow Submarine'. That sort of made my day 🙂

I loved the blue smurf and blue is a nice colour and condition so I don't mind. Anyway Amy kicked ass and I thought she quite intersting. Unfortunately I felt they rushed everything with that season a bit, I would have preferred a gradual transformation and so on, but yeah, if they pull the show, Joss Wheedon had to make best of it and so did he, with creating that nice blue smurf.

I just didnt like the 'Illyria, Dwillow, Gwen' characters(too fantasy and x-men like) and prefered characters like Kate, Ethan and Doyle(more real)

Nope, I have to disagree, Illyeria was one of my favourite characters from Angel. Don't get me wrong, I liked Fred a heck of a lot, but the transformation into Illyeria proved to me what an excellent actress Amy Acker is and that the writers weren't scared to do things in the show that they perhaps couldn't have done with Buffy.

Either way, Illyeria is not the worst character ever.

Sorry, my comment above before I accidentally hit "enter" before I was finished was supposed to say "or wouldn't have done on Buffy"...BTVS never would have brought in a character like Illyria, and if they had...they would have made fun of how ridiculous she was while they actually took her seriously on Angel...

I think she was pretty funny, she did however kill one of my Fav character so I did hate her for a while. Plus its something different and it was an interesting twist which no one knew was coming.

Well, yeah, part of loving her involved hating her for a while, and then coming to understand her better thanks to good writing and great acting on Amy's part.
