I'm Afraid the Avengers Will Succeed

So am I the only one not thrilled with the thought The Avengers being a multi-zillion dollar hit? If it is huge, does that mean we get 2 hours of Joss every 2-3 years? 😡

I really hate thinking about Joss and theatrical movies. In 2 years he could put out 20-60 episodes of TV instead of 1 movie.

Well I'd much rather prefer to see him back on TV, but hopefully this will give him more opportunities to do that. I am excited about The Avengers, but it's not quite the same as if they were his original characters, KWIM? I mean, I'm looking forward to seeing what he does with them, but I want to see his original ideas on the screen!

It's been almost ten years since Joss as been given the chance to put out 60 episodes of television. If The Avengers flops, it could mean no Joss at all. For a long time.

I wish him nothing but the absolute best with it. I really do.

As for him consulting us? I can't help but find that a ludicrous thought. We aren't his keepers. Just people who like some of his work.

I'm looking forward to seeing The Avengers because my friends are. I honestly couldn't care less about these character though. I know nothing about comics. Literally nothing.

But as far as television vs film, it is Joss' choice. I can see the merits in doing both. I prefer television in general. And as someone who wants to be a showrunner, there are several movies I want to make too. I don't think someone has to be strictly television or strictly film. That's actually one of the reasons I look up to Joss professionally. He's done things and been successful with them in a variety of mediums. He's got some awesome television shows, he did the screenplay for Toy Story (which is tied for most awesome thing he's ever done with Buffy IMO), he's been successful with live action movies such as Serenity, and he basically started the successful webseries with Dr. Horrible.

I don't think you should be nervous/afraid of Joss doing things in different mediums. It just means he's creative in more ways than one.

Didn't I read somewhere that when Dollhouse was canceled, he seriously considered saying "well... I guess I chose the wrong career"? And then The Avengers came along and he said to himself "I have one more chance"? I think I do remember reading that... And with that knowledge, Kean's right. If The Avengers flops, it could very well mean no Joss at all. Now THAT'S what I'm afraid of.

But who knows? Maybe if the Avengers is successful, he'll start putting out more work in other fields too, not just in film.

I dunno, maybe it's just me, but I'd only be happy with a new Joss TV series if he had some really good writing partners. I'm not too invested in Joss news. Bad fan.

Of course we would all love to see Joss working on TV. If he has a chance to put anything out there, more power to him. Plus once he gets some money in his pocket who knows what happen. 🙄 It's a good thing.

I have never been into The Avengers but just because Joss did it, I may have to give it a try.

I have a good feeling the Avengers will do well and be a milestone for Joss. I think it will be everything Wonderwoman was supposed to be without having the limitations Wonderwoman would have (i.e. breaking the cheesy concept people have of her in their heads). The past seven years have been hard for me to wait three plus years between projects (and truthfully after Firefly I was afraid we'd never see Joss on our small screens again).

The Avengers is set up to be a critical success and the actors won't stop raving about him. Add that to the fact that the Iron Man movies have been most successful and this is the same franchise. I think this will really help his career.

My boys are superheroes fans, especially the littlest. We just saw Green Lantern on Fathers Day (can't wait for the animated Green Lantern: Emerald Knights to hear Nathan Fillion voice Hal). So we will for sure see Avengers (& I keep reminding them that Joss is the one writing & directing). We have seen both Iron Mans, & Thor (although the 4 yr old calls him Storm) & they're excited about Captain America. So we would see Avengers no matter what, it's just extra cool for mom!

I hope it is a success because I like the actors. I think it will do just fine if it opens on the right weekend. Superheros are bringing in the money these days.

I would say Joss was better at TV but only two of his shows have lasted more than technically two seasons. I think he should go to movies.

Edit: If the Avengers movie succeeds it won't be because of Joss. It will make money whether its good or not, like the crappy Transformers movies.

Still, I hope Joss makes the movie good enough to deserve all that cash.

I think The Avengers will help elevate Joss's career as a director, producer and writer. We've already seen how well he can slide in to movies with Serenity and of course writing for Captain America. Even if The Avengers has a pants story I can't imagine it bombing it at the box office. This film is going to be a milestone for Marvel at least.

Don't despair. If it's a big success there is no way they will let him direct Avengers 2... they will do what they did with Favreau and IM3.

so...you're saying if it's a big success, Whedon will be taken off of the Universe due to the wider narrative compromising his creative range? Is there some Beta Ray Bill: Godhunter adaptation I don't know about?

I want him to do well as he's provided us with some quality TV and films in the past and so should be recognised by more people. It would be a shame if he stopped making TV, but if he has the chance to do more films and further his career then more power to him. It's quite nice seeing an 'underdog' succeed if that doesn't sound too pretentious.
