I'm afraid to watch 7

Yeah, I can understand some hesitation. Season 7 gets some criticism.
At times I even start to think it's not very good myself after reading about it too many times.

But that feeling quickly disappears whenever I start watching.
If anything I get surprise how good it actually is.

Think Ethan Reigns makes a good point.
Much of the criticism comes from too much analysing and overthinking.

So, I don't see why you wouldn't like it really. Especially since it is the first time for you.

OK, I'm pretty sure I'm stuck in a rut and will never finish this series. So many people say Season 7 sucks, and I just can't bring myself to start.

🙁

I really don't think you'll regret watching it once you start. It's definitely worth watching if only to say you've finished the series. Personally, though, I love season 7. 🙂

Agreed with everyone saying the criticism comes only when you start analysing the series. S7 is actually quite good when you don't think about little details, but the season does have more plotholes or little things that don't make sense, or inconsistencies. If you ignore those it's a fantastic season. One of my most watched too.

Oh, come on. 🙁 You can't stop now. What if you'll end up loving season 7?

I love Season 6, and I love Season 7. It has it's issues, but it has some amazing episodes. Season 1 is the only season I never rewatch.

And although I was sad when I was done with Season 7, I was much more sad when I finished Angel. Finishing Buffy was sad, finishing the Buffyverse was worse.

But... season 7! It's a blast to watch - particularly if you go forward with no judgement. I think season 7 is possibly the most intriguing season as it's Joss tying up this show with all the ribbons and bows and loose ends that he wanted. I don't agree with all the choices, but I respect everything that the writers and Whedon put into this season and the series. Plus it's fun with all the nods to the series and quite frankly, I can never get through the finale without crying. Plus: Nathan Fillion!

Keep us posted on your progress watching Season 7. It is an exciting season if you don't start overanalyzing everything that goes on. Chosen is a very moving finale - I have torn it apart as having some of Buffy's worst plans, but you owe it to yourself to go through the entire show just for the sheer enjoyment of it. If you got through Season 4, it is better than that. And if, indeed, you come to an independent conclusion of your own that the Season sucks, then at least you will be able to join in the discussion of why it sucks.

Note: you are NOT in English Lit class. You don't have to agree with the writers or accept their (or our) points of view. You don't have to analyze every detail. Just watch it for the fun of watching it. You won't have an essay to write, a test to take or a paper to turn in. Then if you feel like joining the arguments about it, you will have your own opinion. There are people who loved "Ted" and "Normal Again". I thought they were the most unwatchable episodes in the entire 144-episode series. Yet some of the people here like those episodes. You may like Season 7.

Ethan Reigns, I loved "Ted" and "Normal Again"! They spoke to me deeply.

I'm a few episodes into Season 7. Watching it will probably take a while, since I'm spending most of my free time sorting out some employment issues. But if any of the episodes really "get" me, I will post about them. 🙂

OFAWB,

I'll be curious to know what you think of season 7 once you're done. Take your time....no rush. If anything, it'll make you appreciate the earlier seasons even more, but will leave you with a vacuous feeling in terms of what could (and should) have been instead how the series turned out at the end. It's kind of reminiscent of the old moral ought/is duality, in that just because the series flopped in season 7, it doesn't necessarily mean it ought to have been so. The stars aligned for this series early on, but not so much for the last season. Ugh, I'm preaching. Sorry, but I'm kind of passionate about this subject.
At any rate, good luck with your employment issues. It's tough out there, and I wish you the best....

I really like season seven, you should watch it and form your own opinion. Don't let other people make your decisions. There are episodes in every season that I don't care for and skip when I re-watch the series. But I watch every episode in season seven.

I really liked season seven too. It's not my favorite but it has some amazing episode. I love the focus on Anya or Spike. And there's Felicia Day ;-)
It's a good one I think.

There's an awful lot of hate out there for Season 7, but in reality it has some realy good episodes. It starts strogly and ends strongly.

My opinion is that it's better than Seasons 4 and 6, and kind of on par with 5 (which I feel is a tad overrated- mainly because of Glory sucking as a bad guy!)

TWP went to town of Season 7, and I think that's where a lot of the negative came from. But having seen their ratings system (apparently 'Hush' is rated the same as 'Beer Bad') they don't have a f*****g clue about what makes a good Buffy episode. Quiet a flaw for a reviews site to have.

You could try Critically Touched or A.V Club for more balanced reviews, I don't agree with everything either site says, but they are intelligent reviewers, unlike TWP who aren't half as funny as they think they are- just nasty.

Season 7 is personally my least favorite season, but that is just according to my own tastes.

There was a lot in season 7 I liked regardless though, and I don't think I could imagine not watching season 7.

It is worth looking at and a lot of people do enjoy it. You never know how you might feel!

It's been nearly two weeks since I finished Season 6, which is why I haven't posted much in the past few days.

I've been too busy to start Season 7, but I'm also afraid to! I'm afraid I won't like Spike with a soul. I'm afraid I'll hate the Scoobies for deserting Buffy. I'm afraid of Willow being with someone who isn't Tara. I'm afraid of Buffy showing me she doesn't/never did/will not love Spike. I'm afraid of the season being "the worst", which a lot of BTVS fans seem to agree on. Most of all, I'm afraid of this wonderful show ending.

...How do I start watching? I can't believe I'm saying this, but I really don't want to.

IMO, it does suck. Season 7 is easily the worst BtVS season, but at least once its done you get to watch Angel season 5, which is amazing (and redeems Spike)

DON'T DO IT!
Or, do do it, that "Don't do it" was really me trying to send a message to my pre-S7 self through you. I think you should definitely see them all at least once. I was lucky enough to have first watched Buffy when I was too young to notice the stuff that now grinds my gears about S7, so when I did my big re-watch last year I probably could have done without S7 and gone away happy, remembering S7 as a good if tinged-with-sadness ending to a great show. Instead I watched it and I regret that so much, not because it's particularly bad, but because it ruined that half-formed memory that I had sort-of treasured.

Some have said you only really dislike it if you over-analyse it or rely too heavily on what you've read beforehand, but personally I watched it with no preconceptions (or certainly no negative ones) and with the fullest intentions of just enjoying the ride, but I couldn't. It just was not enjoyable.

Warning, potential spoilers ahead. Read on at your own peril.

First off, there was the fact that straight away I was presented with the fact that Willow had been in England, on MY side of the Atlantic, and no-one had informed me at the time. (I was like 12 at the that time, so I've no idea what I think I could have done with the information, but still). Then, Willow seems to get over Tara pretty quickly, which is painful for me as I'M not over Tara yet. In fairness, she's later shown to be not as over Tara as it first seemed but then that kind of gets ruined by that bloody potential of hers.

Secondly, Buffy seems off. Of course, Buffy's always a little estranged from the group, what with being the chosen one and then what happens in college and then dying and all, but there seems to be something else that I can't put my finger on. I don't know, maybe I'm just projecting my sadness at the end of Buffy on to Buffy, maybe it's even written in a way that makes you do that, but it just didn't work for me. Also, the boot-camp phase with all the potentials at the house AAAARRRGGGHH!! it's excruciating, particularly the endless speech-making and the brattiness of the potentials. I did, however, find it funny how Andrew comments on the speech-making in "Storyteller" so I guess I can live with it.

Finally, what really gets on my nerves is that the whole thing feels like it's trying to be epic and it sort of fails. The big bad feels like Glory over again to me, with twists but nevertheless, Glory. This doesn't help with the whole "this is the biggest big bad we've ever faced and it might be too strong for us" thing, you just know it's all going to work out in the end. Of course, you always know it's going to work out in the end, but I can't seem to suspend that knowledge enough to let The First really worry me, even though its powers are pretty freaky. Caleb is very good as the big bad's physical presence but probably needed to come in to the equation a lot earlier. The way the bad guys are taken down in the finale is a bit weak, imo. Willow's part in it and the scythe are just wrong. I can't explain why, they just feel wrong.

I still think Season 7 is worth watching, for the good episodes alone, if nothing else.

'Lesssons'- one of the best season openers, 'Same Time, Same Place', 'Selfless', 'CWDP', 'Storyteller', 'Lies My Parents Told Me', 'Dirty Girls, 'End Of Days/Chosen- the ending is epic and beautiful. 🙂

A strong start and a strong finish- it's just a shame about the middle, and some of the subplots that run through, and the fact that some of the characters hardly have anything to do, and they introduce some really irritating characters- (Kennedy, Andrew, Wood...)

Also, by Season 7, although we're used to the bad guys acting like idiots and doing nothing, The First is probably the best at this- maybe it's part of the whole 'worst evil' thing. Or, maybe because its incorporeal and just naturally lazy, or distracted.

But overall, if you read this whole thread, take in the hate people have and then go watch the season, you'll be pleasently surprised. 🙂

Or maybe they won't be pleasantly surprised and will end up despising season 7 like so many of the rest of us.....
If I remember correctly, the first time Season 7 was out on the tube the atmosphere of several episodes at the beginning was decent, the momentum seemed to be moving back closer to recapturing the essence of what so enamored me about BTVS in the first place.

However, then the writers seemed to have lost the plot and the momentum train just ran out of steam and had to stop for some directions, so near the end, I was kind of rooting for the big bad to succeed in their diabolical scheme, because if they had, or at least got close to it, the writing probably would've had to be refocused back onto the series core 4-6.

It's a mixed bag, definitely not the worst season IMHO - Season 6 - as at least it had some horrifying potential (pun intended 😛) and not just Season 6's formula - drama, drama, drama, obscure pop culture geek joke, drama, dancing demons, drama, serious warped adult themes, drama...and then...crayola CRAYONS? Where was the horror, the seemingly impossible odds and the devoted friends with wry humor who would always get you through it all, in the end?

Totally agree about Season 6, it gets way to much credit for being 'adult' and 'dark' which just cover up bad writing, out-of-character actions and no plot to speak of.

Season 7 has a arc, plot and direction- it may very well fail to keep up the momentum, I agree with that- the middle part is so flabby. But at least you can see where it's going, what the stakes are.
Where are the stakes in Season 6? they happen 4 episodes from the end...

Oh. and to 'bentjazz', maybe I should've put 'in my opinion', but since this is an opinions board I thought that went without saying- you disagrre with me fine, don't snark from the sidelines, give examples and offer up your own arguement to counter mine.

Season 6 is unique in not having a simplistic big bad guy plot, for that alone it deserves credit, not to mention all the other reasons
thetopher,

Simmer down, friend. We all know the arguments as to why some people think season 7 sucks. Why should I reiterate the obvious, ad infinitum? I think I've explained myself on this subject in previous threads. Or at least I've tried to. I'd much rather snark from the sidelines concerning this subject, at this point in time. And who knows, I may get crraazzzyyy and post about it again sometime in the future. That is, if I have the time. I work 7 days/week-80+hours/week. I simply don't know if I have the brain power/IQ points/energy to further regurgitate on this subject, in depth. And I do want you to prepare yourself, because I do plan on snarking in the form of a comment disagree via your "Saddest Part of Buffy Ending" post (I would have done so already, but the site wouldn't allow me consecutive comment disagrees), in which you complain of how the thread had turned into yet another "why I loathe season 7 thread" in which comments posited "the same arguements again and again." And yet you want me to provide examples to counter your argument and basically regurgitate "the same arguements again and again." Okie doke. You see, snarking does have its virtues and advantages....
No hard feelings, thetopher. One thing I have learned from this site is that I am but a novice compared to all the other Buffy lovers out there. I thought I knew something about Buffy until I found this site, and then I learned how much I have to learn. That said, you have my apologies if I have offended/angered/perturbed you in any way. Who knows, maybe one of our buffy-board's resident Buffy expert season 7 sympathizers will turn me to the Dark Side one of these days. Not.....

Hey, I'm not at all angry, I didn't object to you disagreeing with me, just the way you did it. A simple 'gotta disagree with you there' would've been fine, no need for rudeness.
I understand (despite what your clumsy sarcasm inplied) that people are going to disagree with each other. I've had some great discussions with other people on these boards whose opinions differ from my own. 🙂

And, brushing aside your needlessly patronising tone I will say this: this thread is entitled- "I'm afraid to watch season 7'- it's about Season 7, the pro's and cons of it and so forth. Fine.
The other thread you reffered to was about Buffy ending, and in what way this made people sad. i.e- Nostalgia, rose-tinted glasses. But some people took the opportunity to trash Season 7 (again)- I said my peace (snark free)and abandoned the thread, that's all.
