Does anyone else know the story behind this bizarred dream of spikes in chosen. Is it one of those private little jokes thatI'm not in the loop on or is it just something a bit silly?

I read one, somewhere, one time - can't remember where, should've copied it - about a shoe store in Los Angeles they were referencing. It's most likely bogus though, or you would hear more about it.

I also heard a theory, I think it was at Whedonesque, saying it might have something to do with the "Shanshu prophecy". Sans in French means without, so sans shoe - without shoes. Therefore when spike is "drowning in footwear" he's is with shoes in a big way, and - according to the theory - the vampire the Shanshu prophecy was meant for.

That makes sense thank nerd4hire!
i read somewhere that, can't remember where, but someone thought it was somwthing to do with The Shanshu as well...in S5 of Angel, Spike calls the prophecy 'Sans Shoes' which i suppose lends itself to N4H's theory.

or, it might have just been a weird dream...not everything in the Buffyverse means something. Cheese Man anyone?

I wonder what would Spike or Angel do if (or better to say) when one of them will become human. I mean Angel became human in one episode and yet refused this gift...because as a human he could not protect Buffy...he also signed the Prophecy that by hopes of "big evil" will prevent prophecy from coming true...any way becoming human for a vampire means loss of power, immortality and a crazy sex drive that is somehow connected to vampiric nature...

I never have figured out the cheese man thing. It's kinda just weird. Maybe they all liked cheese or something. lol.

As for the "drowning in footwear" i have no idea. But it did lead to some comic laughs afterward. I think I couldn't stop laughing for an hour it was so hilarious.

The cheese man was there to represent the randomness of dreams or something like that lol

I'm pretty sure its just random, I recall Joss saying something about it in the commentary for the episode, but not sure what he says, probably just randomness, like the cheese guy.

Hadn't heard that. Interesting...

Just a theory but wouldn't the idea of Spike dreaming he was drowning in shoes be the total opposite of him being without them? Therefore the opposite of Shanshu (Sans Shoes)? Suggesting that Spike actually wasn't the one meant for the prophecy?

Thankfully it's not my theory, and I don't have to defend it. ;)

I read once, but I can't swear to it, because I don't speak French, that the word "shanshu" is simply the French word for "vampire," Maybe some of our French speaking readers could affirm or deny that...

I'm pretty sure that the French word for vampire is just "vampire" but my grasp of the language is very limited as well so I wouldn't swear to it. I'm certain that it isn't shanshu though. As far as I'm aware that term was made up for the show.

The french word for vampire is def not Shanshu, the show is called Buffy contre les vampires in France.
I'd actually just be interested in seeing what a dream of drowning in footwear would entail?

Was he just walking in a shoe store and suddenly hundred of shoes just fall all over him or what?

I've "drowned" in a lot of things after that line....salad, paperwork, coffee....although I think this actually is more part of the verbiage thread.

Spike had a secret fetish for sucking toes, in the dream he told everyone in the scoobies of it, they quickly took off their shoes for him. That's how come the dream ended with Spike saying I'm drowning in footwear !. tee-hee.
