Okay, so this is basically a 'What would you do...'
Cordelia got me thinking. I know alot of members here are older, but I also know some are still in school, which is who this probably would be more realistic for...anywho...
Say your best friend comes out. She or he openly says I'm gay. How would you react?

People who went through this, throw your two cents in. I was just thinking about it and wondered how people would react.

I would probably be a little surprised, but hey, whats wrong with that? There choice, plus, they're still the same person really, its not like they're gonna change. I'd be cool with it, at least they came out and said it, unlike some who hides who they really are!

If it was my best guy friend, then I'd probably jokingly say, "Well, now I don't have to feel bad that you never hit on me."

But seriously, I'd probably have the same reaction as Jen 🙂 I'm not going to say I wouldn't be taken aback, but they're still the same person.

You'd be really surprised how scary it is to come out to your closest friends... But honestly... Once you come out to one, it really gets easier...

I came out... 2 years ago... While I was dating this girl... And all I basically said to my best friend at the time was (as I showed her the pic).. "That's my girl-friend"

She questioned her hearing at first... But I guess being blunt about it like that helped me, because if I tried to rehearse some speech... I don't think I would have done it...

I agree about your first sentence particularily!
since i'm openly gay w/ my gf, aka Amber Benson, i would tell my friend that it was prefectly ok to be open about his/her sexuality. i would also help them w/ any problems that they had or any questions... overall i'd give them my support, and help them through any deliemas they may be having.

I found out from my mom that one of my close relatives was, I wouldn't say I was shocked or anything, maybe a little suprised cause I had no idea, then like 3 months later he came to me and was all like so you know? and I said ya, and he was kinda quiet, but then I told him he was still the same person to me and I still loved him and that it didn't matter. So I wouldn't freak out if one of my friends came to me and told me the same thing.

If any of my friends would come out (and believe me, there is practically no one left now) I wouldn't make a thing out of it at all. I would just be kinda happy they decided to come out, it IS a great feeling. Even though I've never had that coming out problem myself since I've always accepted my sexuality since like forever. And I've always hung out with very open minded people. So when I was 13 and told my friends I might be into girls they were like "Uh.. Ok? Cool." That was a reaction good enough to handle for a 13 yearold.

I've only freaked out once and that was when my oldest sister (who has always known about me being gay), at the age of 20 (I was 17 then) came out to me, dead drunk at a party, that she liked girls. I was in a state of shock and told her she couldn't do that. But then after like five minutes I calmed down cause she had started crying and I realized I was an ass.

When I was still at school - many, many moons ago - I think I would've probably freaked out but accepted it eventually. Now I'm older and more worldly-wise (allegedly 😉) I would say "Good for you." Nothing worse than bottling your feelings up or hiding things from people you care about.

However, if the friend in question was Mrs P (who is my best one 🙂) - I would be seriously freaked out 😉

Well, if any of my friends (who are straight) told me they were gay I'd probably freak out. Or at least be very very surprised. Most of my friends are straight, but very open-minded and I would be so surprised if they realized now that they were gay. But hey, it would be cool, we could check out girls together.
I have never had to come out either, people sorta knew, I'm not sure why. And now Everyone know. Well, I have "told" like four people in my life but the rest figured it out one way or another anyway.. (Plus it was kinda obvious when I brought my girlfriend to school 😀 )

the thing is ...my best friend is the biggest man whore ever...so...i'd be surprised...but i'd be cool...cause he's my best friend..

hey...what if I turned out to be gay...lol

My best friend is bi. It doesn't bother me in the slightest. She tends to go for men more often though. It can get stupid at times just cause where together most of the time people think were 'doing stuff'.. so lame. Did annoy me last night though, cause she always goes onto me about not being a show to other people just cause she's kissing a girl and what does she do last night make it so she is a show just to get a drink.

My best friend is bi, but she was bi before I met her. I'm really not fussed, I would probably say a more kind version of "so what?"

It would be shocking... but you just deal. It's not the end of the world.

Kind of like what Faith said in regards to werewolves... "As long as you don't go scratchin at me or humping my leg, we're five by five"

Same applies here.

Re:

I don't think a persons sexual preference really matters much. I'm bi-sexual myself and I haven't been "out" long. But I think if my best friend were to approach me and tell me that she was a lesbian, she'd probably get the same response as she would if she had just told me she bought a new car. "Hey...cool."

I really wouldn't be bothered.. eh i guess it depends on the friend....see if online, everyone knows i like girls and if they don't, they know i'm totally cool with stuff anyway.
my thing is as long as it doenst hurt an unwilling person, im usually ok.
a lot of kids in school say "oh thats so gay" and such so...i really dun mind, and i'd kinda go off the person and the situation. cuz that would affect how i reacted. it wouldnt be bad. but...eh...it really wouldnt bother me. i know it would beother a lot of kids in school but...eh...havent got anything else to add and im still sick so off i go.

I am bi but prefer men..i just consider myself open minded 🙂

It wouldn't bother me, i found out my brother was gay when i was 10..i was shocked at first, but now he is like my big sister LOL
A lot of my friends are bi..i would be shocked though if a guy i fancied or heaven forbid was even dating turned around and said he was gay! now that would suck.

Believe me, I wouldn't care. My sister and I are VERY close and she came out last year. She's twelve years older and she just came out at the age of 33. It hasn't changed my view of her at all. My sister is my sister, no matter what! 😀 And my best friend would be the same case.

I'm from the same cohort as Mr. P, so I would have been seriously wigged as a teen/twentysomething. Remember, we are products of our times, so it was somewhat less than accepted (he said, with gross understatement). Like Mr. P, I've become more accepting as I've aged, and, while it would make me a little uneasy that it took my friend/family member this long to trust me, there would be no rejection or recrimination.
