I'm gay...so what?

I had several male friends come out over the course of High School and College and for the most part, we (as in their circle of friends) kind of had an inkling about it before they admitted it, so it was never a shock.

Seriously, I don't think it's a big deal and it doesn't change my view of the person at all.

Again, wouldn't change my view of the person, but given that my social circle is not the most homofriendly, I'd find it very surprising.

I have a friend who has just been outed to her parents against her will. She wasn't ready to tell them because she knew they wouldn't take it well. They didn't!!! They sat her down to ask if it was true and, when she admitted it, her dad told her she had a week to change or she had to move out. This was just last week. They told her that she'd ruined their life. 3 or 4 days after that her dad apologised. He's still not happy about her sexuality but he doesn't want to lose his little girl. I'm not impressed with him at all and I really feel that he went way outta line. An apology doesn't quite cut it really.

So, by this story, you can probably guess that I don't have anything against homosexuality. I don't truely believe it's totally their choice to be gay and I don't see it as a big deal at all. After all, my friend is still the same person she always was and I love her. I can't just take back that love because she prefers ladies!

That's scary.. I have a hard time believing some people can actually that stuff... Must have been extremely hard for her.
Like everyone, I'd be a little shocked at first, but I'd be over it in like 5 minutes, lol...
I'd probably be excited...for ages now Ive been saying I wanted a gay friend, but alas...no gayness...

I hate people who find out someone they know is gay, and then they just act differently to how they normally would...
Like my friends brother just came out, so her other brother wont talk to him, and her Dad wants to kick him out...just cuz he's gay!!
Gay people are people too...

Ahhh, people annoy me...

Yup, and we try to annoy you as much as we can...;) Welcome back to full posting status, Lee!

Perhaps, not as extremely as you said in your post, but I think it's inevitable that you behave differently was someone has come out. I mean sexuality is a part of a person's identidy and if this person changes his/her sexuality (outward, at least) this person also changes his/her identidy, which we use to value someone on and which we use to establish a way to behave around someone. However, in the case of your friend's father... he's just an ignorant f***.

Now, I've been wrongly "accused" of being gay for the last three years of high school and this has made me really pro-gay people, because, even though I'm not gay, I've experienced some of the discrimination against them. So, if any friend of mine were to come out, I'd try to be as supportive as possible... but in the case of female friends, I would try to get to see her snugg another gal 😉 j/k

Again, what's with that? I'd so love it if someone would explain that to me, lol.

And yeah, I very much agree about the acting different being inevitable. I know I would act differently, but that doesn't have to be a bad thing. I'd think it was kinda fun if a friend of mine turned out to be gay, but I'd still be very surprised.

If someone came out to me, i'd be extremely proud of them, its a very hard thing to do, especially if you're doing it for the first time. I'd imagine it gets a lot easier after that. Of course it won't change the person, if anything it will just make the two people closer, which is always good. They may seem a little shy and nervous at first, but once everything is out in the open, they'll go back to their normal self again. I'm not sure if the person who started this topic is coming out themselves, or someone came out to them (sorry, really can't remember what your post said!) but either way I wouldn't worry about it at all, it makes no difference what so ever. Someones sexuality can't change the person inside. *nods* 😛

I actually had some lesbian friends in high school and they asked about it too; here's the explanation I gave them as to why guys like lesbians. (Some basic understanding of math is required.)

girl = sexy

lesbians = girl * girl = sexy * sexy = sexy[sup]2[/sup]

I hope that helps.

O
OneEyedXander
Well i can't fault the math
Lol, yeah I got that part but I don't think gay guys are sexy.. Ok, bad example since I'm obviously a lesbian but.. eh.. I mean, what's so sexy about girls you could never ever have..? (Or is that the thing, that you can never have them and they'll just stay a dream? Uh..)

LMAO Ally that was the greatest thing I've ever seen...

But I have several male friends who say the same thing... The girl doesn't have to be the hottest thing in the world for it to be sexy... Take two normal looking girls, and put them together, and the male brain automatically thinks sexy... It doesn't matter what the girls do, its what the girls COULD do... Guys have a very imaginitive mind when it comes to that... Believe me...

I've never really come out, tough I'm bi. But I think most of my friends know anyway. I never had a serious girlfriend yet, though few years ago I had a crush on a girl but nothing ever happened because I thought she was straight, but later I found out she had a crush on me at the same time.

Uh, I hate when that happens. Not that it ever has to me but it must be.. eh.. quite annoying?

Anyway, Amber, if it's all about what the girls COULD do, guys could just have those thoughts about none lesbians and it'd be a little easier? Maybe not but I still think it's very strange, lol. But it'd be kinda cool if guys automatically found me more attractive just 'cause I happen to be gay.. that hasn't happened yet though, heh.

Yea.. thats true... and guys will truly think those things no matter what.. but seeing girls kiss and what-not, its sort of puts those thoughts into action... seeing is believing afterall 😛

Yeah, it really is! And also, I think it happened to me more than once.. I think I have to become more courageous when it comes to these things 😉

Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm really not courageous either. I have almost never told anyone what I really feel about them (unless they've said something first)..

Me too.. I can never believe someone would ever like me.. but I guess they can..
Like Mr.P and KD, I definitely went to High School in very different times. To top it off, I went to a Roman Catholic HS that had just recently turned Co-Ed, we still wore uniforms (the old schol kind) and were taught by Nuns and Priests.

My good friend came out to me. This must have been 1987 or 88. I admit I was surprised, but it did NOT bother me. He was still my good friend. Nobody was gay back then...I mean openly of course. And alot of our mutual friends were VERY anti-gay...just because that's what you are taught in a strict Roman Catholic High School. In fact, this friend that came out..was a very vocal opposer of the gay lifestyle. I guess he doth protest too much 😉

I can only hope it's alot easier for people these days (I hope).

I don't want to overplay the Persecuted!Minority! card, but as much as things have improved, that about sums up my high school experience. Complete with horrible, horrible uniforms (Who thought that a kilt was suitable for high school students!?!?! WHO!?!?!?) and freely homophobic teaching. Homosexuality was still a crime until 1993. Midlands Ireland seems very much to be stuck back in the eighties, as regards social attitudes. Dublin is far better, though "-The Lesbian" still very quickly becomes a surname. Having said all that, I've recently embarked on the almost entirely unpleasant endeavour of coming out in stages, and goddamn if that isn't an enormous weight off my shoulders.

Hey, good for you Jill (with the coming out not the living in a homophobic world but yeah you got what I meant, heh).. no good with the "almost entirely unpleasant"-ness, of course, hmm.. Sometimes I believe I'm spoiled having the friends I have (and living where I do).. not that it's entirely pleasant here but.. uh.. easier..?

And the kilt thing sounds fun to me.. but I guess that's just me, ehh..
