I'm gay...so what?

Well done Jill, coming out is a tough thing to do. Anyone else have any coming out storys, or are we all still in the closet!?

Well, I'm out but I've never had to "come out". I've never really told anyone, they just sort of new anyway, for some reason.. Um, except for that time when I told my whole school.. hm..

OK, epo, give over...how the heck did you tell the whole school?
I'm in the same boat with the never having to come... It was more like people asking me if I had a girlfriend in random conversations, and my jaw dropping to the floor...

whoa, seriously? i'd think you'd more likely be the jaw-dropper, not the jaw-droppee. i suppose it can't always happen the way one wants it to anyway. there will always be surprises and twisty life experiences.

Lol.. Well, there was this guy at my school, talking about homosexuality in history and society and stuff.. So he asked if there were any openly gay students at our school, and someone said that "maybe people don't feel comfortable telling everyone that".. I thought it felt really stupid that no-one said anything so I had to say "Yeah, uh, I am" quite loud.. After that like three or four other girls (all in my class, lol) did the same, like "ooh, me too!".. lol.. But I don't know, I once brought my girlfriend (at the time) to school so.. maybe some people had already guessed..

Were people ok with that? Wow, if I did the same at my school, i'd get picked on until I left, sad but true. I hate how some people can't accept it. So my theory is to wait until college, that seems to be the start of the 'coming out stages' for most people! I'm bisexual, but haven't actually told anyone yet. I'm not ashamed of who I am, it just seems as simple as if they ask, i'll tell.

Yeah I know, that's why I didn't really "tell" anyone. Like "hey I've got to tell you something about myself..", uh, I just couldn't do that, seemed to unnatural. But sometime you have to do that (well, not in my case but in most cases), 'cause people won't ask you, most of the time..
But yeah, they were ok with it, my school. I think.. it's not like anyone mentioned anything about it and they don't treat me differently or anything, lol.. But most of my friends/classmates already knew, as I said, for some reason..

I don't want to overplay the Persecuted!Minority! card, but as much as things have improved, that about sums up my high school experience. Complete with horrible, horrible uniforms (Who thought that a kilt was suitable for high school students!?!?! WHO!?!?!?) and freely homophobic teaching. Homosexuality was still a crime until 1993. Midlands Ireland seems very much to be stuck back in the eighties, as regards social attitudes. Dublin is far better, though "-The Lesbian" still very quickly becomes a surname. Having said all that, I've recently embarked on the almost entirely unpleasant endeavour of coming out in stages, and goddamn if that isn't an enormous weight off my shoulders.

Funny you mention that..this friend had moved here from the UK in grade 9 and came out in grade 13, and alot of the people at the school (my ex-hubby included) were from Belfast..and NOT really open to the gay lifestyle..thus why it was so difficult for people to come out then. Well they just didn't.

I had a pretty interresting experience with "coming out"... It really wasn't my coming out, I had considered myself out to who I needed to be out to, but there were still people at my school that didn't know... But anyway, I was starring a play at school, and we had won the Regional competition with it, so we were to be performing it to the entire school. I had a line that was put in STRICTLY for me, because I'm gay, and everyone thought it was awesome (the cast atleast).

It's sort of hard to explain it... But, in the part, my best-friend and I are sitting on the edge of the stage, and talking about boys... she mentions how "boys are impossible, and that maybe she should save herself the trouble, and become a nun..." and I take it one step further and say.. "forget that, you know, maybe I'll just become a Lesbian..."...

WELL, my Principal at the time, is HIGHLY homophobic, and after he read the script, he forbid me to say that line while we performed for the school. I was furious... Its a PUBLIC highschool, so he isn't allowed to forbid anything like that... The worst part about it, was that he pulled me aside, 10 minutes before curtain, and told me... Anyone who is in theatre knows, bad idea... SO, I just looked at him, smiled, and walked back to the dressing rooms... I asked the Director, and my best-friend, and they both agreed on what I should do... SO, I went onstage, and when the part came, I sat there in my spot... Took an extra second pause... Spotted him near the front and stared at him directly in the eyes... and said it... Loud and clear...

That was seriously the best moment I've EVER had on stage... Everyone laughed... It was amazing... 🙂

You kick ass!
lol, that's such a good story! I'm so glad you stood up for yourself and chose to say the line, he had no right in telling you not to.
