Just a few minutes ago I re-watched "Why We Fight" and I saw connections that I had never noticed before ...and it isn't said that my observations are correct.
I noticed a certain connection between Lawson and Connor and (to a lesser extent) also with Lindsey McDonald.

The way Angel talks with Lawson reminds me of the way he turns to Connor, with that lingering guilt for ruining their lives. Angel also called Lawson "son" a couple of times...

What do you think? You think it's just random and I'm reading too much into this, or is there a real parallel between Lawson and Connor?
 
Of course there's something of a parallel, but the reason Angel calls him "son" because it's the phrasing an older military-type guy might use. I think one of the reasons for bringing in this slightly weird idea that Angel was coerced and co-opted into military service was just so they could have him call the guy "son" and underline that parallel.

But I felt a kind of fatherly affection in the Angel's voice.

Lawson's anger, however, is very similar to the Connor's reaction in "Home" and that of Lindsey in "Dead End"
 
I've never thought about that before, it's interesting. Angel's had a full life certainly... I kind of feel like it's another little dramatic touch of "everything Angel touches turns to ashes" ... he tries to be good and do the right thing and yet... so often it comes up not so good.

Connor, Lawson, Penn (Somnambulist)... has Angel always been a fatherly type of guy? Albeit not flawless that's for sure.

So where does Spike fit into the whole 'Dad' thing?

I remember back in Buffy when he offered to kill Dru for Buffy - that seemed so random until I remember Angel killed Darla and Buffy loved him. Spike was trying to walk in Daddy's shoes long before he got a soul.

On the ship he called Lawson 'your new boy' so at least in a vampiric sense Lawson was a member of the family. Angel is not only a father, he's an absentee dad - a theme that all 4 sons experience and resent.

Angel left Penn before he got the soul, left Spike when he got the soul, left Lawson soon after he was turned - and Connor, the one he loved beyond love, was taken away. Connor never got past the anger he felt against Angel for letting him get taken by Holtz.
 
It's strange that you haven't mentioned Drusilla.
She is the only one that feels lack of "dad." Spike has never been happy to have him around. However, I was referring to that episode specifically, and Angel's attitude towards Lawson. From the interactions of Angel with Spike I never seen any connection with Connor, and Angel isn't the Spike's father.

Spike isn't happy because he is not getting validation from Angel - and c'mon, which of the rest of the boys ends up following in Dad's footsteps? Dru may have turned Spike, but even Spike said it - Angel was his sire. Talking about the other 3, and Angel as a father figure, I believe he actually lived with Spike longer than any, and was more of a father figure for him.

I think Dru is fine without Angel just like she is later fine without Spike.
