Has it ever occurred to anyone that Buffy, in fact all of the Slayer line, are potentially immortal? Bear with me here. Aging, to put it in its most simple form, is the body's gradual loss of the ability to heal itself from the various injuries and sicknesses incurred by the body. (I know there's more to it than that, but that's the most obvious part.

With the enhanced healing abilities granted a Slayer, that bodily deterioration could be greatly suspended if not stopped altogether. Given the Slayer's chances of a violent death (100% in past generations), this Slayer power has obviously not been tested up until now, but considering the virtual army of Slayers inhabiting the world today, the chances of Buffy living a tremendously extended time are quite good.

But the slayers do rush into danger basically every other day... most people don't do that and still die.

But we know that they do age. I mean, 21-year-old Buffy is obviously older than 16-year-old Buffy.

Right?

Yes, but once she reaches full maturity (around 25 or so, she maynot show any further signs of aging, or the aging process may be slowed down drasticly, as in to the point of being unnoticable with a life span lasting hundreds of years.
I think aging would continue, but so would the healing process. So her face and body may appear older but her strength, her health would seemingly stay the same. Keeping her, yes, somewhat immortal. Very interesting.
 
The face "aging" (as in wrinkles and sagging flesh) is also due to the skin and muscles there losing their tone and flexibility, so the Slayer healing would greatly delay if not eliminate that also. The point that I was trying to lead up to is that the major argument about her having a long (as in VERY long) term relationship with whichever ensouled blood sucking fiend is quite viable. As for children, I'm sure Willow could assist in that field with a little magic (assuming that she doesn't flub it up as usual)
 
It's definitely plausible. I think it would slow it down but not eliminate the aging process
 
Interesting thought. Does anyone here watch Heroes by any chance?
 
Now in comics, if they want to keep her looking like she's in her mid-twenties for the next ten years, they can.

Then again, with slayers tending to die young, we don't know if their strength starts to decline in old age like a normal person. It could be that their decline is accelerated too, like at some point they just burn out and the power is gone.
 
Rapid cellular regeneration means much more rapid cellular division, much higher metabolism, a lot more activity on that level. Humans grow old because over time the continual DNA/Protein process of division and manufacturing fades with each use.

The DNA and eventually the protein they create (making up practically all of the solid portion of your body) become much less defined and weaker, you are sort of wearing out on the most basic level, which when you see the effect over the whole body, old infirm and saggy people with little or no energy, old people.

A Slayer putting a heck of a lot more strain on their metabolism, their cellular makeup, means the cells are dividing like crazy and the DNA is being worn down faster. If anything its more like a Slayer has perfect health and skintone etc, but or a much shorter amount of time, they'd actually burn out faster.

But then the whole point of a Slayer is that they don't live too long, so push the body to its limit while its young, because even if she doesn't die in combat, that regeneration will take its toll and rapidly burn out the body before 40/50.

If they were totally human, maybe so. The Slayer's metabolism, though, is part demon "Get It Done," so the normal rules don't apply.
You are forgetting one thing Kemy, the source of the Slayer's extraordinary ability is a mystical non-human one. The demon from 'Get It Done' is the source of her abilties, and since it isn't human (obviously) the rules for a normal human might not apply in every area.
 
Realistically though we don't know if slayers can live past the age of 25? Is Buffy the longest surviving Slayer?
 
I thought for some reason Faith was older. My bad....With Willow's help and some good ol fashioned slayer healing I guess Buffy could do very, very well with Angel, Spike or whomever she chose. Makes it that much better really. I mean to think that Buffy, the hero, could live for a super long amount of time.
 
There could be something to this theory in the fact that slayer abilities don't kick in until puberty, too. I mean, before that, slayer healing might accidentally stunt development. After puberty, there aren't really any processes to mess up (aside from natural aging and menopause, neither of which apply to most slayers, since slayers die young).
 
Thats the confusing thing about the Potential/Slayer dynamic.

The Demon essence was forced into the original Human vessel, the First Slayer, and from then on when a Slayer is killed the essence finds the best Potential and imbues them with the Slayer ability. It has limitless power since each Slayer is equally as strong even when more than one is called, instead of one essence being split.

In season 7 none of the Potentials compare to Buffy and Faith, its even stated that they don't have nay Slayer strength or ability, just the Potential to do so someday if they are called.

So, I think being a Potential is a biological quirk only found in women, probably as a result of the second X chromosome (which men don't have, hence Slayers always being women) which makes their bodies the perfect retainer for the energy/essence of the Slayer and occurs at puberty. In not called, the body isn't all that dissimilar to a normal Human one.

So only the Slayers themsevles posses the powers, and none of them have lived long enough to know what would happen. But its possible the Demon essence does impart the extra energy needed but it would still put a strain physically on the cells themsevles having to divide and form fully.
 
You'd think Buffy's body would have some weird mutation from all the changes. It's been a rat and a corpse and invisible.
 
Beaten, bruised, battered, rat-i-fied, invisible, died twice, lord knows what Spike did to it *shudders*, stabbed, staked, bitten, internal bleeding, concussion, severe blood loss etc

Slayers really do have great regeneration, but can run on low blood levels and injuries to the head, as Buffy and Faith demonstrated.
 
I dunno what I would think/do if Buffy came out with a tail. Surgery we could only hope would fix that.
