Writer: Joss Whedon
Director: Joss Whedon
Aired: January 20, 1998

Trivia:

- Sometimes "Buffy" writers include in-jokes in their scripts. The shooting script for this episode contained the following direction: "A couple of soldiers pass. Xander suavely nods to them. They nod back and pass without comment, because they are extras."

- Angel turning bad after sleeping with Buffy was one of the solutions the writing team came up with to counter the potential Sam and Diane fall-out that often happens in TV shows when two leading characters finally get together. (The general consensus is that "Cheers" (1982) took a nosedive once Sam and Diane became lovers.)

- Filming had to be halted for 25 minutes after Sarah Michelle Gellar's big crying scene for the actress to compose herself. (ain't that sweet?)

- Joss Whedon's favorite "Buffy" episode.

- In the flashback scenes of Buffy and Angel making love, the heavy breathing wasn't provided by David Boreanaz and Sarah Michelle Gellar but by Joss Whedon and supervising sound editor Cindy Rabideau. Whedon was too embarrassed to ask the actors to record it. (now that whole sweet thing is little disgusting)

- There's another in-joke in the Buffy shooting script: When Xander and Cordelia make out, the directions in the scripts are as following: "They haben der big smoochen"

- Unlike the characters on the show, many fans refer to the soulless Angel exclusively as "Angelus," to differentiate him from the good "Angel."

- Willow and Xander had a "We Hate Cordelia" club at one point, and Xander was the treasurer.

- Xander is older than Buffy.

Goofs:

- The Judge bursts into flame before the missile actually strikes him.

- As the Judge is zapping his first victim on the stairs at the mall, the entire background scene of the mall below is frozen. This is especially noticeable in the case of a stooped-over man visible past the Judge's left elbow.

- Xander tells Cordelia to meet him at Willow's house in thirty minutes, wearing something trashier. Then it's the next day, when Buffy accosts Ms. Calendar in her class, demanding answers. The next thing you know, it's night again and Xander, Willow, Cordelia and Oz are at the army base. Joss himself has spoken on this: "I was watching the final mix of 'Innocence' when I noticed this huge mistake. Let's just think of it as them going to Willow's the night before to practice and go over what they were going to do."

References:

- At the end, the movie Buffy and her mom are watching is Stowaway, a 1936 musical starring Shirley Temple, Alice Faye and Robert Young. The song "Goodnight, My Love" is being sung by Faye and Young.

Best quotes:

- Angelus: You can't do it. You can't kill me.
Buffy: Give me time.

- Cordelia: This is great. There's an unkillable demon in town, Angel's joined *his* team, the Slayer's a basket case, I'd say we've hit bottom.
Xander: I have a plan.
Cordelia: Oh no, here's a lower place.

- Angelus: It was a good time. Alright? It doesn't mean like we have to make a big deal.
Buffy: It *is* a big deal.
Angelus: It's what? Bells ringing, fireworks, a dulcet choir of pretty little birdies? Come on, Buffy. It's not like I've never been there before.
Buffy: Don't touch me.
Angelus: I should've known you wouldn't be able to handle it.
Buffy: Angel! I love you.
Angelus: Love you, too.
[turns away]
Angelus: I'll call you. (this is so sad)

- Xander: I know it's weird...
Willow: Weird? It's against all laws of God and Man. It's Cordelia. Remember? The, the 'We Hate Cordelia' club, of which you are the treasurer.
Xander: Look, I was gonna tell you.
Willow: Gee, what stopped you? Could it be shame?
Xander: All right, let's overreact, shall we?
Willow: But I'm...
Xander: Willow, we were just kissing. It doesn't mean that much.
Willow: No. It just means that you'd rather be with someone you hate than be with me.

- Oz: Sometimes when I'm sitting in class... You know, I'm not thinking about class, 'cause that would never happen. I think about kissing you. And it's like everything stops. It's like, it's like freeze frame. Willow kissage. Oh, I'm not gonna kiss you.
Willow: What? But freeze frame.
Oz: Well, to the casual observer, it would appear that you're trying to make your friend Xander jealous or even the score or something. And that's on the empty side. See, in my fantasy when I'm kissing *you*, you're kissing *me*. It's okay. I can wait.

- Joyce: So what'd you do for your birthday? D'you have fun?
Buffy: I got older.

- Spike: You've really got a yen to hurt this girl, haven't you?
Angelus: She made me feel like a human being. That's not the kinda thing you just forgive.

- Xander: I'm 17. Looking at linoleum makes me wanna have sex.

- Willow: I knew it. I knew it. Well, not 'knew it' in the sense of having the slightest idea, but I knew there was something I didn't know.

- Drusilla: We're going to destroy the world. Want to come?

Soundtrack:

- "Goodnight My Love" - Alice Faye and Robert Young

Lmao at the 'heavy breathing' thing :)
Very interesting facts indeed!

I have heard once about the"heavy breathing" not being of the actors. lol at Joss!!!:lmao: I mean didn't they record the voices in Amends? When I first saw the scene though I genuinely believed it was David and Sarah.

The final scene of Angelus' and Buffy's fight...when Buffy kicked him in his *ahem*, I felt like the female ass-kicking power woke up inside Buffy. Angelus had said a lot of thigs to her, hurting her...it was time he pay!!!

And about the 25 minutes of crying unstoppably...what can we say?The girl is a true hardcore Bangel fan!!!Plus a very good actress🙂 And of course David was there to comfort her right? 🙂

Yeah, I've read somewhere he was the only person who could calm her down.

LOL! I heard that about the breathing too!
Poor Sarah, us Bangels feel your pain! Our Angel was taken away from us! 😛

& I love Oz's little speech in the fan 😀 It was so sweet.

This episode is brilliant, no question as to why it's Joss' favorite. 10000000 out of 10, definitely.

We Bangels have to put up with Angelus and when we get Angel back it is as good as it was leading up to innocence.
Wow, very interesting facts. I knew via the commentary on the episode by Joss that Sarah really went there but I didn't know it took 25 minutes to calm her down. She is so amazing. This is one of my favorite episodes & one of my favorite scenes is at the end...points to sig 😀

Another amazing episode. Acting from DB and SMG when Angelius talks to Buffy for the first time is superb. These two together create some truly great scenes and the one in innocence is one of them. Another one i like is in Amends where you can almost feel Angel and Buffy's pain. David Boreanaz's acting in seasons 2 and 3 is so much better then in season 1.

I know that this episode really felt hard for two of them. Like, Sarah beged Joss to not to make her do that scene in Angel's apartment, and that scene was so powerful because that was her real tears, she wasn't acting, she was really sad. Because I think Sarah is one of Disney girls, someone who likes happy endings and belive in true love. And DB did that very well, although he said it was hard for him.

Aww! Me and my older sister watched Stowaway when we were really young at my aunt's house! That's the one where Shirley Temple plays a girl named Chin Ching! I never knew that's what Buffy and her mom were watching, but maybe it's because me and my sister saw the colored version!

I love this episode to death. it just yanks my heart out and leaves it on the floor, nah but seriously, this ep is perfection from the tears to the rocket launcher and the ballbreaker kick

also lines like "Well, she's IN the world" is why I fell in love with Spike's character to begin with

I fell in love with Spike when I first saw him, but then that love just disappeared around season 5 :/

I couldn't agree more. I mean I grew to love him again but s5 just makes me cringe when it concerns him. 🙁

Wow, there are a lot of interesting facts here that I totally didn't know. 😀 The first one made me literally LOL.
Xander tells Cordelia to meet him at Willow's house in thirty minutes, wearing something trashier. Then it's the next day, when Buffy accosts Ms. Calendar in her class, demanding answers. I never noticed that before... Craziness. 🙂

Nor did i, didn't even enter my head :biggrin3:

Your so absorbed by the episode that those mistakes don't even matter anyway.

Yeah, I agree. A lot of things were going on around Angel and Buffy, so I didn't even noticed those small mistakes, that would probably be huge for me in some other episode.

*testing* Just going to see if the third time is the charm (my previous posts have all gone missing).

It worked, yay!

So Joss got the idea of the spin-off from watching Angel(us) as a girl? That explains Angel's wardrobe later on, and Spike's "Except that one time" comment...

What the hell. Half the thread disapeared, lots of posts gone missing. Anyone else see this?
