Director: Joss Whedon
Aired: January 20, 1998
Trivia:
- Sometimes "Buffy" writers include in-jokes in their scripts. The shooting script for this episode contained the following direction: "A couple of soldiers pass. Xander suavely nods to them. They nod back and pass without comment, because they are extras."
- Angel turning bad after sleeping with Buffy was one of the solutions the writing team came up with to counter the potential Sam and Diane fall-out that often happens in TV shows when two leading characters finally get together. (The general consensus is that "Cheers" (1982) took a nosedive once Sam and Diane became lovers.)
- Filming had to be halted for 25 minutes after Sarah Michelle Gellar's big crying scene for the actress to compose herself. (ain't that sweet?)
- Joss Whedon's favorite "Buffy" episode.
- In the flashback scenes of Buffy and Angel making love, the heavy breathing wasn't provided by David Boreanaz and Sarah Michelle Gellar but by Joss Whedon and supervising sound editor Cindy Rabideau. Whedon was too embarrassed to ask the actors to record it. (now that whole sweet thing is little disgusting)
- There's another in-joke in the Buffy shooting script: When Xander and Cordelia make out, the directions in the scripts are as following: "They haben der big smoochen"
- Unlike the characters on the show, many fans refer to the soulless Angel exclusively as "Angelus," to differentiate him from the good "Angel."
- Willow and Xander had a "We Hate Cordelia" club at one point, and Xander was the treasurer.
- Xander is older than Buffy.
Goofs:
- The Judge bursts into flame before the missile actually strikes him.
- As the Judge is zapping his first victim on the stairs at the mall, the entire background scene of the mall below is frozen. This is especially noticeable in the case of a stooped-over man visible past the Judge's left elbow.
- Xander tells Cordelia to meet him at Willow's house in thirty minutes, wearing something trashier. Then it's the next day, when Buffy accosts Ms. Calendar in her class, demanding answers. The next thing you know, it's night again and Xander, Willow, Cordelia and Oz are at the army base. Joss himself has spoken on this: "I was watching the final mix of 'Innocence' when I noticed this huge mistake. Let's just think of it as them going to Willow's the night before to practice and go over what they were going to do."
References:
- At the end, the movie Buffy and her mom are watching is Stowaway, a 1936 musical starring Shirley Temple, Alice Faye and Robert Young. The song "Goodnight, My Love" is being sung by Faye and Young.
Best quotes:
- Angelus: You can't do it. You can't kill me.
Buffy: Give me time.
- Cordelia: This is great. There's an unkillable demon in town, Angel's joined *his* team, the Slayer's a basket case, I'd say we've hit bottom.
Xander: I have a plan.
Cordelia: Oh no, here's a lower place.
- Angelus: It was a good time. Alright? It doesn't mean like we have to make a big deal.
Buffy: It *is* a big deal.
Angelus: It's what? Bells ringing, fireworks, a dulcet choir of pretty little birdies? Come on, Buffy. It's not like I've never been there before.
Buffy: Don't touch me.
Angelus: I should've known you wouldn't be able to handle it.
Buffy: Angel! I love you.
Angelus: Love you, too.
[turns away]
Angelus: I'll call you. (this is so sad)
- Xander: I know it's weird...
Willow: Weird? It's against all laws of God and Man. It's Cordelia. Remember? The, the 'We Hate Cordelia' club, of which you are the treasurer.
Xander: Look, I was gonna tell you.
Willow: Gee, what stopped you? Could it be shame?
Xander: All right, let's overreact, shall we?
Willow: But I'm...
Xander: Willow, we were just kissing. It doesn't mean that much.
Willow: No. It just means that you'd rather be with someone you hate than be with me.
- Oz: Sometimes when I'm sitting in class... You know, I'm not thinking about class, 'cause that would never happen. I think about kissing you. And it's like everything stops. It's like, it's like freeze frame. Willow kissage. Oh, I'm not gonna kiss you.
Willow: What? But freeze frame.
Oz: Well, to the casual observer, it would appear that you're trying to make your friend Xander jealous or even the score or something. And that's on the empty side. See, in my fantasy when I'm kissing *you*, you're kissing *me*. It's okay. I can wait.
- Joyce: So what'd you do for your birthday? D'you have fun?
Buffy: I got older.
- Spike: You've really got a yen to hurt this girl, haven't you?
Angelus: She made me feel like a human being. That's not the kinda thing you just forgive.
- Xander: I'm 17. Looking at linoleum makes me wanna have sex.
- Willow: I knew it. I knew it. Well, not 'knew it' in the sense of having the slightest idea, but I knew there was something I didn't know.
- Drusilla: We're going to destroy the world. Want to come?
