So S5 of AtS references Rick Springfield not once but twice - and it's an obscure reference to begin with. There has to be an inside joke there that we don't get: someone on the writing staff liked him or something.

Can you think of any other inside jokes that pepper the shows?

Lie To Me
Ford told Xander & Willow about the time that Buffy was in a beauty pageant that had a swim suit portion. I think that was a shout-out to Sarah as Helen Shivers in I Know What You Did Last summer.

What's My Line #2
Buffy tells Kendra not to watch the inflight movie if it has a dog or Chevy Chase. Sarah was in a movie starring Chevy Chase.

Killed By Death
Cordelia saying that while Buffy is in the hospital she might as well get that thing on her face fixed and then is shocked that nobody else has noticed that thing. I always saw that as a dig at Sarah's interesting nose.

Maybe ihis is more coincidence than inside joke, but in Season 4 of his show, when Angelus jokingly suggests that they offer him a bribe to cooperate, he mentions that "the new Mustangs are really nice, and what's a better ride than a Mustang?" David is, himself, a fan of the Ford Mustang, and owns a classic 1965 convertible.

(These two might not technically qualify, since they're on non-Whedon shows, but they DEFINITELY poke fun at Whedon's characters)

Also, in one episode of "Castle," Fillion dresses up in his Mal Reynolds outfit from "Firefly" and "Serenity", complete with brown coat and handgun, as a "Space Cowboy" for Halloween and when a murder victim (complete with puncture wounds in the neck) is discovered in a cemetery, says "Buffy must be off tonight."

And on "Smallville," in a Season 5 episode, there is a college sorority, all vampires, run by "Buffy Saunders."

Not sure if this is called inside joke. 😛 In Conversations With Dead People, Buffy said things like Billy Idol copies Spike's looks.

And someone said this in the other thread about David and James' height difference. Spike said Angel wears lifts, but James was possibly the one who wears them.

Dawn mocks Buffy about her height several times in S7 when Michelle obviously got taller so much over the seasons.

In Enemies when Wesley asks where Faith is Buffy says Faith would make Godole look punctual.

Wesley had gone on a diatribe about how difficult the demon with the books of ascension would be difficult to find. When Xander announces that he found the demon.

Buffy: Fashion tip Wes the mouth looks better closed.

In Bargainning the Buffybot says "I don't eat" and some fans thought that was a dig at the speculation that SMG had an eating disorder.
