From (1997) - Trivia

Series star Sarah Michelle Gellar initially auditioned for the role of Cordelia Chase, and Charisma Carpenter, who plays Cordelia, auditioned for the role of Buffy. Others who auditioned for Buffy and got other roles include Julie Benz (Darla), Elizabeth Anne Allen (Amy Madison), Julia Lee (Anne) and Mercedes McNab (Harmony Kendall). Bianca Lawson, who played Kendra the Vampire Slayer in season 2, originally auditioned for the role of Cordelia.

Nathan Fillion (Caleb) originally auditioned for the role of Angel when the show was first being cast in late 1996.

Other actresses considered for the lead role as Buffy also included Katie Holmes and Selma Blair.

Danny Strong (Jonathan) originally auditioned for the role of Xander.

Ryan Reynolds was originally offered the role of Xander.

RYAN REYNOLDS! God, no.
I would have liked Ryan Reynolds as Xander I think. Although I just plain like Ryan Reynolds.

Also, Christian Kane originally auditioned for the role of Riley. Joss was so impressed with him he created the character of Lindsey for him! I have to say though, even though Marc Blucas was good, the character of Riley becomes infinitely more appealing with the thought of CK in the role.

Nice thought that, Ck as Riley :)
I feel like Nathan Fillion (who at least looks older then Boreanez) would have made the age difference thing a bit to uh... not good times.

Somehow I just can't picture Nathan Fillion playing a brooding, tortured vampire, just one step away from being self destructive, with an atrophied sense of humor, dominated by a girl half his size. David just seems so perfectly qualified for the role. No wonder Buffy loved him so much.

Day 4. 26 more days to go.

Greater love hath no man than that he would give up his Spuffy for a friend.

Eeewww Nathan for Angel. That would be horible. I'm glad Joss understands the concept.. vampires = sexy. I think Sarah would be good as Cordy, but she is better as Buffy 🙂 And I so can't imagine Katie as Buffy. Mmmm, Ryan Reyndols.. that would be intersting 😀

That counts Fillion out for Spike too then. Since Spike, at one time or another, is ALL of the above.

Oh please! Like you didn't go off and make loads of art with Chris as Riley!

Spike never brooded, and he had an excellent sense of humor. Go back and re-watch "Lover's Walk."

I actually didn't, 'cause I can't get screencaps from that ep of DC. I still have all my notes for that wall, and I will make it eventually, lol.

Oh I'm sure some people would but I do admit I find the Buffy/Riley thing much more likable with CK in the role.

Wouldn't he have seemed a bit old for the part, though? Riley was supposed to be a grad student assisting Maggie Walsh in her Psych class, and he just looks a bit mature for that sort of part, even back when he was first on Angel.

Course, just about every actor on either show was playing a character younger than they actually were, so I doubt that it really would have mattered,

I don't think so. I know 4th years (Seniors) in college who look in or around the same age as CK did at that time. I don't think it is a real stretch to imagine him as a post-grad.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing.

Although Angel's character was sired at 26, so any way you slice it pushes the limits of acceptability. I'd like to see a conversation between the Angel character and Chris Hansen, I think that would be a funny skit.

"........why don't you have a seat?"

Trying to imagine Mercedes McNab/Harmony as Buffy is seriously cracking me up. I'm so accustomed to the chosen actors with their chosen parts that any other character seems so... out of character, haha.

Imagining SMG as Harmony totally made my day. Especially, in Harm's Way. 😀

I can see switching SMG and Charisma Carpenter.

I think that would have been perfectly fine. If that is how they did it we would be talking today about how nobody but Charisma Carpenter could play Buffy. And SMG would have made a funny Cordelia, more like her character in Cruel Intentions.

I always thought that, especially in the earlier seasons the fact that Charisma towered over SMG (5'7'' versus 5'2'') was pretty important visually. Because of that Cordy really always felt like the Queen talking down to her subject. They probably put Cordy in pumps and Buffy in flats even, the framing on screen always made Cordy seem larger then life. Not sure that same effect would have been achieved the other way around.
