Yes im just another of many that needs help for school lol. I'm a journalism major and im doing a story on Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD). I need answers ASAP as its due thursday morning and i need to start reworking the article immediately.

I have just a couple of questions to ask, i need like a general idea of what you guys think.

1) How many hours a day would you say you spend online, outside of work/school related activities?

2)Have you ever heard of internet addiction?

3) do you believe internet addiction disorder is a real problem or a "fad disorder"?

4)Would you consider yourself or anyone you know, addicted to the internet?

and any other ideas you might have feel free to add your opinions.

1) How many hours a day would you say you spend online, outside of work/school related activities? 0-1, probably about 2 a week total but if I had internet at home that number goes WAY up!

2)Have you ever heard of internet addiction?
no

3) do you believe internet addiction disorder is a real problem or a "fad disorder"?
Real problem, people can get addicted to all kinds of things

4)Would you consider yourself or anyone you know, addicted to the internet?
Kinda used to be. I used to be online 24/7 but I'm just too busy now with other things

Good luck!

1) How many hours a day would you say you spend online, outside of work/school related activities?
Probably 5-6, but it's so broken up (read a chapter, check email, read a chapter, check the boards, work on homework, check email) that I couldn't give you an exact number.

2)Have you ever heard of internet addiction?
Yes

3) do you believe internet addiction disorder is a real problem or a "fad disorder"?
I believe someone with an addictive personality can get addicted to anything.

4)Would you consider yourself or anyone you know, addicted to the internet?
I suppose I have a slight addiction. I know my father is hard-core addicted. I have a friend who spends all her time in RPG rooms and has screaming fits if she can't get online. So . . . yes.

1) How many hours a day would you say you spend online, outside of work/school related activities?

-Under normal circumstances, less than 2 hours, totally.

2)Have you ever heard of internet addiction?

-Yes, I have.

3) do you believe internet addiction disorder is a real problem or a "fad disorder"?

-I believe that it is a real disorder. Having a breakdown everytime you tried to leave the house without hairspray in the 1980's would be a fad problem, but the internet is far from a fad, in of itself. Even though the internet is merely a disguise for other disorders to come out and do their damage, the sheer amount of information on, and uses of, the internet makes it legit, even if you're only addicted to myspace, shitty chat rooms, fansites, etc.

4)Would you consider yourself or anyone you know, addicted to the internet?

-No, I would not.

You're welcome.

1) How many hours a day would you say you spend online, outside of work/school related activities? maybe 4 hours? Probably more

2)Have you ever heard of internet addiction? Yes

3) do you believe internet addiction disorder is a real problem or a "fad disorder"? Yes, addiction is always serious.

4)Would you consider yourself or anyone you know, addicted to the internet? Hm, maybe me a little bit, but I can normally deal without internet if I have to, like when we're on vacation

1) How many hours a day would you say you spend online, outside of work/school related activities?

This is really hard to gauge. For starters, I have an "always on connection," via cable, so I suppose that I am always technically "online." Beyond that, I tend to spend most of my day at a computer of some sort. In addition to my desktop PC , both of my TVs are attached to computers (that are online). If I want to watch a movie, for example, the chances are good that I'll pull up the Watch Instantly feature of Netflix and stream a movie onto my big screen TV. Technically, I'm online while I stream that movie. I'm not a big gamer, but the XBox is online, too, so when I do play, I guess you could say I'm online. I don't have a car, (my husband takes our only car to work) so I tend to be pretty isolated. Often, it is just faster and more convenient for me to bank, pay bills, make purchases, or run other errands online than it is for me to take a bus. My friends and family are scattered all over the country (and the world), so to stay in touch, I often use e-mail or IM. Time zones don't cause nearly so much trouble online. 🙂 When I do call via a telephone, though, it's via my Voice over IP connection, (the same cable through which my TV, internet, and Xbox all run) so I guess you could say I'm technically online then. I can also get calls forwarded from that phone to my cell phone (and the other way around). When we cook, the chances are pretty high that we'll take a laptop into the kitchen and search the internet for a recipe rather than using a traditional cookbook. Not even the bathroom is completely removed from this interconnectedness, although I'll let you imagine the degree of multi-tasking that goes on there. 🙂 Taken together, I'm sure all of these activities add up to a ton of online time.

Basically, because my hubby's an I.T. guy, we've got a pretty well-networked operation going for us. Granted, it's not always pretty. It's mostly McGyvered up out of spare parts and a mix of older and newer technologies and devices. It works, though. That means that we're pretty much online whenever we're in the home, even if we're not actively surfing the internet. If you count all of that internet-related interaction and interconnectivity, I don't think 8 - 12 hours a day would be an exaggeration; in fact, it may even be an understatement. For us, "the network" is pervasive and ever-present. We use it for every-day tasks or activities for which we would have once used phone books, cook books, land lines, rabbit ears, stereo sets, stationary, bank tellers, shop keepers, etc. It's not even so much "the computer" or "the internet" that we use anymore, as the lines between those technologies and others are becoming increasingly blurred.

That said, I do spend an alarming amount of my time on the Buffy Boards, on a certain Jane Austen site, and on an RPG site. I'm not sure whether that's an addiction to the internet, though, or whether it's due to the fact that I am an as yet unpublished writer. I love writing. I love the fact that people read what I write. I've never much cared whether they read that in my first grade handwriting journal, in the "slam book" that my friends and I kept in middle school, in the newspapers than I ran in high school, in my Creative Writing workshop in college, in the tech manuals that I wrote as a tech writer, or, now, on various online forums. I love to read and write. The internet gives me a forum for that. If that's an addiction, well, it's not an addiction to the internet as much as it's a lifelong addiction to the written word... and one that I wouldn't give up for all of the money in the world.

2)Have you ever heard of internet addiction?

Yes.

3) Do you believe internet addiction disorder is a real problem or a "fad disorder"?

Umm... I'm not sure. I think I'm straddling the fence on that one. On the one hand, I guess anyone can become addicted to the chemical/hormonal reaction of the body to a certain stimulus. If people can become addicted to gambling, for instance, why wouldn't they be able to become addicted to the internet?

On the other hand, I'm not so sure that using the internet often (or even all the time) counts as an addiction. I'm not even sure that feeling isolated or unable to complete certain tasks without the internet is a good indicator of internet addiction. I'm just not sure how you'd separate addiction from dependence. Humans become dependent on the technology that they create. Is the entire population addicted to electricity or plumbing because they form an important part of the infrastructure on which our society depends? Are we addicted to our cars because we can't get to work without them? Single sourcing is big right now, and the internet is the means by which it is achieved. The internet is becoming as vital a part of our infrastructure as TV cables, telephone wires, radio waves, highways, telegraph lines, train tracks, etc. etc. were in the past. To me, the internet seems like a source of information, goods, and services. I think it possible to be addicted to one or more of those information types, goods, or services, but I'm not sure you can be addicted to the means by which they are sent and received.

4)Would you consider yourself or anyone you know, addicted to the internet?

No. I know plenty of people for whom the internet is pretty much always there and always on, but I don't know anyone who can't go to work or on a date or to the mall or for a dinner out with friends or some other activity that requires one to interact with people one-on-one without interference from the internet. I don't feel withdrawals when I walk to the grocery or when I go to the comedy club with my buddies. I don't feel withdrawals when, almost nightly, I allow myself my greatest luxury: a bubble bath complete with candlelight and a good book. The same is true for my hubby: he is also perfectly capable of walking away from "the network" for his greatest luxury, which happens to be a motorcycle ride along the ocean highway or up through the mountains. We spent President's day out and about with our phones turned off, and never once did we feel the need to pull out the laptop or juice up the cell phone (although we could have done so). The internet is a tool and a valuable one, but even for high tech people like us, it just sort of fades into the background of life.

1) How many hours a day would you say you spend online, outside of work/school related activities?

Around 4 or 5 hours.. Gosh it doesn't feel like it though!

2)Have you ever heard of internet addiction?

Yes

3) do you believe internet addiction disorder is a real problem or a "fad disorder"?

Yes, people with addictive personalities can get addicted to anything and the internet and certain types of sites on the internet can he highly addictive. I read an article about a woman addicted to the internet a couple of weeks ago actually and the lengths this woman went to to be on the internet and the consequences she faced proved that it is a "real problem".

)Would you consider yourself or anyone you know, addicted to the internet?

I wouldn't say I was addicted to the internet, as I can live without it and the amount of time I spend on the internet is merely for entertainment, which I can find elsewhere. A few years back i did have a friend who was addicted to a site called "Habbo Hotel" where you can buy virtual furniture with real money and make friends with other "Habbo's". It was unbelievable how much she actually spent on this site, on just a few pixels. Sometimes she refused to leave the house if she was on it, and would rather spend time talking to her other "Habbo" friends than with her real ones. Thankfully shes come to her senses now, though does still spend a little time on there.

1) How many hours a day would you say you spend online, outside of work/school related activities?

about 12 - 13

2)Have you ever heard of internet addiction?

yeah

3) do you believe internet addiction disorder is a real problem or a "fad disorder"?

Fad

4)Would you consider yourself or anyone you know, addicted to the internet?

Nope

1) How many hours a day would you say you spend online, outside of work/school related activities?
5-8 probably alot less though?
2)Have you ever heard of internet addiction?
Not really
3) do you believe internet addiction disorder is a real problem or a "fad disorder"?
Since I have never heard of it.. I'll say fad disorder but it probably isn't.
4)Would you consider yourself or anyone you know, addicted to the internet?
I'm addicted to it, if in that sense... I love it. Doesn't bother me one bit though. I don't need to be on it, I'd rather do other things and usually do. But then again... Last night, midnight, power goes off while I'm online in the middle of watching something, complete boredom for the next hour trying to get myself to go to sleep. So slightly addicted as in I wouldn't want to live without it. But I could..

1) How many hours a day would you say you spend online, outside of work/school related activities?
Depending on what day of the week....anywhere between 3-8 hours

2)Have you ever heard of internet addiction?
Yes

3) do you believe internet addiction disorder is a real problem or a "fad disorder"?
I believe it can be a real and quite serious problem, but to define at what level it is would be very difficult, if there is even such a way to prove it.

4)Would you consider yourself or anyone you know, addicted to the internet?
I wouldn't say I'm addicted. I do spend a lot of time on the internet, but by the same token, if I couldn't, I wouldn't be jonesing for it or anything. Pretty much every one I know spends less time on the internet than what I do so in relative terms, I'm definitely the net junkie of the bunch.

1) How many hours a day would you say you spend online, outside of work/school related activities?
5-6

2) Have you ever heard of internet addiction?
Not 'til now. Ya learn something new everyday. 😀

3) Do you believe internet addiction disorder is a real problem or a "fad disorder"?
Depends on the person. There might be some who are hard core computer-ers, and others that just "feel" like they need to be on the Internet. Dunno, a theory I'm now working on.

4)Would you consider yourself or anyone you know, addicted to the internet?
I have an addiction. While at school, I think about the Internet, while asleep, I think about the Internet... 'kay, maybe not really, but I'm emphasising my addiction to the Internet. I love it. Were it corporeal, it'd be Mrs. TC...

How sad is that?

1) How many hours a day would you say you spend online, outside of work/school related activities?
Probably 5, abouts.... maybe 6 on the odd day

2)Have you ever heard of internet addiction?
Yupp

3) Do you believe internet addiction disorder is a real problem or a "fad disorder"?
I too think it depends on the person. For some it's a serious and real problem, others maybe not. Depends.

4)Would you consider yourself or anyone you know, addicted to the internet?
I don't think so. I mean I do spend a lot of time on the net, but I'm not going to go crazy if I have to be offline for a while. While I get annoyed if I can't keep in touch with friends/family (which is a big reason why I USE the net in the first place), I don't always NEED to be online.

Hope those answers were okay! Lol good luck with the assignment! 🙂

1) How many hours a day would you say you spend online, outside of work/school related activities? 5 or so

2)Have you ever heard of internet addiction? I have heard people say they are "addicted" I have even said it but I never thought it to be a real diagonsed condition.

3) do you believe internet addiction disorder is a real problem or a "fad disorder"? I am not qualified to issue an opinion. I suppose it could be possible.

4)Would you consider yourself or anyone you know, addicted to the internet?
I think the internet is an outsource for boredom and often its more they are addicted to having the ability to click and connect with others or click and connect with a store than anything else. I think the internet is filling voids for people and simplyfying their lives. Its an easy fix, you want to know something you click and find your answer. From what I know though, the people who claim to be addicted are addicted to online activites that involve companionship. I know that for me I am only addicted to not being bored.

1) How many hours a day would you say you spend online, outside of work/school related activities?

I don't know, 4-6, I presume.

2)Have you ever heard of internet addiction?

I haven't heard it referred to as an actual condition, but I'm aware that some people may find themselves being attached to it.

3) do you believe internet addiction disorder is a real problem or a "fad disorder"?

I don't think it's a problem or a fad disorder. The internet is just another form of communication. I'm lucky in that I am rather popular on and offline, but for some people who are shunned by society offline, the internet provides a security blanket of anonymity and allows them to feel accepted and also able to communicate with other people. I don't think that you can be addicted to that because unless you decide to test out Plato's cave allegory you're going to come across people. The internet is just another medium.

4)Would you consider yourself or anyone you know, addicted to the internet?

Following on from my answer for Q3, no.

1) How many hours a day would you say you spend online, outside of work/school related activities?
Erm...about two hours a day on average, I guess. Actively online I mean.

2)Have you ever heard of internet addiction?
No....

3) do you believe internet addiction disorder is a real problem or a "fad disorder"?
I'm inclined to think 'fad disorder'. Very much inclined in fact, but you never know. Stranger things have happened.

4)Would you consider yourself or anyone you know, addicted to the internet?
No, not really. Although I know a few friends who I personally think are addicted to Myspace or whatever it's called. They say it's the first thing they check when they go online...so I don't know whether that counts.

1) How many hours a day would you say you spend online, outside of work/school related activities?
3- 5 hours

2)Have you ever heard of internet addiction?
Yes but I dont believe it.

3) do you believe internet addiction disorder is a real problem or a "fad disorder"?

Fad disorder, If people are getting a 'rush' of endorphins (which is what an addiction is) when they are on the net there is probably some underlying issue, and they would get that rush from other repetitive actions if the internet was not invented these people would have found something else to be addicted to, like opening the mail to get a rush. I think if the people who claim to be addicted were assessed they would find other issues other then the net that makes them behave in that manner. Or their keyboard is hooked up differently to mine!!

I believe in having an addicitive personality but I dont think you can be addicted to the internet and nothing else.

4)Would you consider yourself or anyone you know, addicted to the internet?
No.

1) How many hours a day would you say you spend online, outside of work/school related activities?
I'm online before I go to school, and then from the time I get home (around 12 or 11, depending on the day) till the time I go to bed, if I go to bed. Otherwise I'll be on all night

2)Have you ever heard of internet addiction?
Yes

3) do you believe internet addiction disorder is a real problem or a "fad disorder"?
Well, it's a real problem.

4)Would you consider yourself or anyone you know, addicted to the internet?
Not really, no.

thanks to everyone who has answered you are a BIG help.

and no, i dont think a person would really realize they are addicted... or at least they would be in denial like most addicts in general are.
