Don't you just love these threads? 😀

Anyhoo...do you think the internet is a viable source to find a potential mate?

I personally don't, but am interested in hearing the opinions of others 🙂

Well, it is kinda weird, with those sites where you are supposed to find your ideal partner.. Um, that I don't believe in, lol.
But I do think you can meet people over the internet.. I have, but, we got to know eachother really well, talked for about two and a half year, met in real life and fell in love at once.
I also do believe you can fall in love over the internet. I mean, it's always a risk, in some ways, that you won't feel the same when you meet for real (sure, people try to be themselves but I think most people are a little bit different on the internet than in real life, just cause, well, writing and talking are different things and so on)... But I definetly think it's possible. I know people who have met like that and, it works, for them at least...

No Even though I know a lot of people who met through the internet. I still don't think its source to find a potential mate? But friends thats a driffent story...

I think people have the tendency to act like someone they're not online as they are virtually anonymous. That's one of the main reasons I don't see Internet Dating as a viable option for myself.

I know that there are people though who act exactly as they appear to be. That's why I consider those people my friends 🙂

Well I do! Kinda living proof here 😛

I met Megs on here, known her for like 2 years, we spoken a lot on the Internet, feelings developed, and we met up, and feelings grew stronger, and Im all happy, and she's all happy 😀

So yah, I believe in it for sure 😀

Congrats Lee!! I'm not saying it can't work, it's just that I don't think I could ever go online with the intention of meeting someone. If suppose I were to meet someone through online means not directed at finding a mate, then I guess I'd be open for it. I'm just not sure I could deal with the physical distance, if there was any, as when it comes to dating I'm a hands on type of person (not meant in a dirty way - I swear!).

The ads, oh woe is me, the dreadful ads. That's why I don't like it. If people just could met withou me having to evade pop-up ads for "met a friend" sites I would be all for it to let them date, but now I'm just annoyed at the commercials.

But I guess I should believe in it, because my cousin met her husband and now father of her kids on the net.

I think those dating sites (as well as the regular phone / video ones) are all crap. And dangerous. Though I think if you meet someone and then talk via internet that's a different story...

The problem i have is where television and movies seem to instantly connect people meeting on the internet as bad and dangerous. Whenever you hear anything on the news or see a plot that features the topic in a fictional show it is always about a 14 year old girl being stalked by some 40 year old guy pretending to be a Justin Timberlike lookalike! Even Buffy was guilty of that to a certain extent with I Robot, You Jane.

Don't get me wrong, i know these guys exist and it is very important that this is taken seriously and kids are aware of the dangers. At the same time though the internet is full of really fantastic people from all over the world that are worth getting to know and quite frankly it is now getting to the point where people are too scared to do that because of the minority of psychos and scumbags.

It just seems a shame to me that those few spoil what is a great way to really expand you knowledge and have a world spanning circle of friends. It should be made very clear that there are weirdos on here but it should also be made clear that not everyone who uses the net is one of them.

I mean the fact is that these nutcases and perverts exist in the real world too so staying away from the net won't ever make you safe. It's better to know the dangers and use the net safely for meeting new people than to avoid it altogether.

Sorry about the rant but the fact that i met th love of my life on the internet probably biases my opinion a little! :happy53:

The exact reason why I avoid picking up guys at Clubs, Bars and Port Authority Bus Terminal (hehehe) 😀

No but seriously, the best guys I've met have been through school, work or other friends.

But he so wanted your number! lol

I just think people can be very different in real life than on the internet so it can go very badly...

Luckily none of you guys were all that different...

Anyhow back on topic...

I hate random IMs from guys who check out the pictures in my profile, but fail to check the fact that I'm not single. Pisses me off royally. There seems to be a feeling that if it's over the internet it's not cheating or what not. I think it's going to be a growing problem in monogamous relationships as time goes on.

Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

My cousin met his wife on the internet, and quite a lot of our family thought bad of it, but I didn't expect much better from that lot. They are one of the most happiest couples I have ever met and compliment each other so well.

So yeah I think it can work if you have the intention of meeting up, but a relationship purely over the internet i'm not sure of, because there is a physical element to a relationship as well as the connection and how do you have that if you are never together?

Well - I think that if you are careful to begin with and make sure that the person is who you think they are then there's a lot of potential for internet dating. It's all about being careful. You have to make sure that you talk to them on the phone (by other means than just messaging). But Lee is living proof that it can work out well.

However, I'm not one for long-distance relationships. I gotta have my man right here beside me so I can have hugs when I please. 🙂

Close is always the best!
Yes it can work.

does it mean its right for YOU?

maybe not. if your insecure about a relationship trying to get somone online probabley wont help you get over those insecurities and will probabley put in you a risky position.

however if your old enough to be sensible then meeting somone off the net as a friend can be a great thing as long as you know what your doing.

if you meet somone as a friend and it goes furthor thats great but if your only looking for a partner on chat rooms then you kinda gotta take a reality check.

I did the 'dating over the internet' thing when I was new to the web and didn't like the 'not being able to touch' so I quickly grew bored with it.

I also met my most recent ex-girlfriend over the internet. She lived nearby, so there was no long-distance thing. We broke up, but the internet had nothing to do with that.

Generally, though, I'm not a big fan of internet dating. Better to meet someone face to face. That way you know if you have a connection or not.

Well I met my fiance over the web and chatted for years as friends. Developed a relationship. Met up, fell inlove, moved in together...blah. I like the internet thing because you REALLY get to know the person.

I have done the whole internet dating thing before. It did not work out. I thought it would be best because you can know a person, wthout having to see them, which is better because I have a fear of people lookingf at me, and of them laughing in my face if i ask them to go on a date. so anyways, I tried it, but then my freind talked to him, and she said that he was lying and that he already had a fience. nice.
