Internet Etiquette

Think that Darla's first post cover most things I would say too.

I do think that it is part of the internet etiquette to actually do your best making yourself understood when posting.
But it isn't the end of the world with some mistakes here and there. It isn't that easy for everyone around the world either. Especially not the grammar and punctuation.

What I often wish people would be better at on forums is to not feed the trolls.
At times I almost get more annoyed on those who answers than the trolls actually. Just ignore it. It isn't a must to answer every single stupid thing that gets posted.
Let the mods take care of it and the overall mood on the forum will be much better.

Like Bexieh said, stealing forum names and descriptions, setting up their own site using your graphics, color schemes, activities, layout, avatars lol etc. I had another Buffy forum staff member tell me that "everyone" steals from other boards as if that made it okay. Over the years I've custom coded a lot of different layouts for the main page, and countless times people have just cut and pasted the code into their own site...complete with the link to the graphics on OUR server and then tell me that they've never visited BB...

That is so frustrating! I buy all my code and stock pictures legitimately. Have you talked to a lawyer about it?
If there is a long post, like this for example, I do like everything to be grammatically correct. But in situations such as chat, or very short posts I don't tend to really care about it, even though I do joke about the difference in spelling between americans and the english. And yes, I use all caps when in chat, but not because I want attention, its because I suddenly get really excited and I feel not using caps just doesnt portray what I want.

What really annoys me is the people who will say stuff about how I write. For instance, if I use a lot of smilies, so what? If thats how I want to write, it is how I will, and I don't like it when people make snide remarks about how it is "childish"... I dont make marks about how everything you write looks boring and monotone.

Rant over.

But yeah, in long posts. Grammar and spelling needed. In chat or short posts, not so much.

It annoys me when people harp on the way I type too. I use a lot of ...'s. Because I like them. And if someone else doesn't, that is not my problem.
I'm pretty chill about how people post online, mostly because I just don't take it too seriously. However, when a mod/admin makes a comment in attempt to calm an argument or put a thread back on topic and people just completely blow them off and continue with what they're doing, I don't like that. I find it incredibly disrespectful and inconsiderate of the people who put time and effort into making places like this run smoothly.

I can't be the only one, but here goes......

I troll. 😱

Obviously not on BB. I'm really Anthony/Goby, I'm really a lawyer, I really love Willow, and I really love punk music. And if I tried to troll on BB (which I never have), I know Darla would give me the boot.

But there is a time and place to troll, and I do it with other liberals. Mostly it has to do with political issues, gays rights, or issues relating to Holocaust Denial. My troll account has been banned so many times, and I receive so much hate mail that it's not safe to post using my real account. But I do troll, report, and post on hate pages in the hopes of getting them removed. Our little group has been successful in removing some terrible anti-Semitic and anti-homsexual pages.

But when I'm serious, like I am BB, I try to follow all of Darla's rules.

Goby agrees: Have you talked to a lawyer about it?

Naw, there's no point - I couldn't really prove it and the expense would outweigh the benefit. It's just frustrating, especially when you see other sites building themselves up on your back, with no qualms. More the principle of it than anything.

To me, netiquette is the same as etiquette in real life. Treat others as you want to be treated. Be respectful, even if you don't have the same beliefs or opinions.

Things that really bug me:

-Incorrect spelling and grammar. This has bothered me since grade school and probably always will.
-Cussing. It just isn't necessary. I understand that it can slip out when you're talking, but when you're typing you are consciously making the choice to type that. Yes, I know it's shocking, but there are some people who are offended by it these days.
-People who post threads/comments that they know are going to be inflammatory. I feel like sometimes people post things on Facebook, BB, etc. that they know will get a rise out of someone and they are looking for a fight. I choose not to respond to these things, even when it's a blatant attack on my beliefs.
-People getting nasty and sarcastic when they disagree with someone's posts. Why can't it just be a simple "I don't agree with that because...", "I don't think that's true and this is why", or "Could you explain more why you think that way, because I see it like this..". I think there are more friendly/respectful ways to disagree.

Anyway, most of those things don't get me too riled up and if I come across them, I just ignore and don't post. No harm done there.

Id love to know why spellign bothers people so much? Tis not that big a deal, long as you get what theyre saying?

I feel the same way. It bugs me when someone is saying something and a person responds by criticizing their spelling or grammar as if that dismisses the whole point the person was trying to get across.

Bad spelling does annoy me, but not to the point where I'd ever point it out in a critical way, because I know it's something that people get self conscious about.

I often point it out by way of a joke though, which I don't think people mind.

I think why it bugs people is that sometimes it's clear the person didn't even try to make what they wrote readable. They're not talking about a here and there typo, but when someone just can't be bothered to take the time to do it right. Personally, it only bugs me if I can't understand what the person is writing. No caps bugs me more.

That said, pointing out a spelling mistake to someone publicly is incredibly rude.

Well, a lot of times a sentence can get butchered so badly that a person has to re-read it five times before understanding what the person was trying to say. Also, a misplaced comma or using the wrong they're/there/their can completely change the meaning of a sentence.

I don't usually correct people (unless jokingly) because it just isn't worth it and typing errors and such happen to everyone. I've just always been a stickler for spelling and grammar. Growing up I have seen teachers go the extra mile trying to help students with these things and the kids just didn't want to take the time to learn it, which just irked me a lot.

My personality dictates that everything be in order and its rightful place, that sort of thing, so I think that's why it gets my goat at times. 🙂

Its rare that a sentence get butchered that badly. To care about spelling is kinda irrelevant.

Well, I can actually tell you from experience on here that that's not true.

And please let others have their peeves without coming down on them for it...

Coming late into this thread there aren't that much to say. Darlas first post said most of it.

Talking down to someone for their opinion is something I have a hard time accepting. When you disagree, strongly disagree or simply just can't understand how people can have a certain opinion it doesn't give you the right to call them stupid or such. Twilight being a great example. Many Buffy fans seem to hate it with a passion. That's ok. Even if I personally think they hate the hype and, many of the, fans more than the actual story. Tell the ones liking it that they're idiots for liking it? Not ok.

As for spelling and grammar. 1. I make lots of mistakes. I'm not good at grammar in any language and english isn't even my first language. 2. I still can point out others mistakes. Not to be mean but when I think it's funny. For example mad skills becoming made skills as some VH:ers know. Since there's quite a big difference between the two. Of course it can still be seen as mean by others. 3. Text speak of whatever (Feel free to correct me on this.) it's called can annoy me if it gets too much or worse, if I don't get it.

As for behavior in general I try to be as I am offline. Not that any of you know how close I manage. What seems to bug some people is that they think I over do the whole "being nice" thing. Sometimes I can agree with that but honestly, not close to as often as they seem to think. It's not an act. Online it can be easier to either stay away or take a deep breath or ten to calm down before posting. Not happening all the time but more often than in real life. Sometimes, hopefully not that often, people think I'm rude and agressive. "Funny" enough it doesn't seem to happen when I in retrospect think I got too riled up when I think someone crosses a line.

I'm another one of those that has as a pet peeve spelling and grammar mistakes (we all make them though... and I get super frustrated when my own posts have some silly typo).
For me though it's because I think the written language is really important, I don't write the way I speak usually because when speaking I'm a lot more prone to slang/colloquialisms, but when writing I like for it to be really clear most of the time (not really in the chat though but when posting). I'm a bit weird when it comes to this though, I think it stems back to school and the rigorous training we had there about how we had to write and appreciate language, especially when we had to practice writing mandates.

Rudeness also gets to me... go figure 😉

How do you overdo being nice? lol 😀

I hate it when people overdo niceness. When someone's so nice that they're never rude... it gets irritating. it's like they're not human. It's like that person at work or school you literally NEVER see without a smile on their face. And their tone of voice is ALWAYS chipper. It's like "you can't be happy/nice all the time. Eventually you've got to be in a bad mood. you've got to snap." It makes you feel bad about your own bad moods/times you've snapped. It's really not fun to feel guilt about being human because someone else is strangely better than human.

I dislike it when people go out of their way to be blunt or aggravating. It's not so much trolling, but the intent is there and it's rather obvious. After so many years on forums though I've learned to find it more amusing than anything, if you give them enough rope they'll soon ruin it for themselves (though I hate that saying).
I was going to respond to this before, but I was on my phone and it wouldn't quote... I'm confused as to what you mean. I go out of my way to be blunt. Because to me "to put it bluntly," "to be quite frank," and "in all honesty" are synonyms. And in all honesty... Honesty is really important. When you're discussing something online, I really despise it when people aren't completely honest about what they're feeling. Being blunt is just getting down to business of your point and cutting the bullshit away. Going out of your way to say things bluntly isn't the same thing as going out of your way to be aggravating. To me, it's going out of your way to be NOT aggravating.

See, I like to type in the way that I speak. Because to me... there's not much difference. Most of my communication with people in general is online and therefore, I like to communicate the way that I would speak. I censor myself a lot on forums like this... but on places like tumblr, I don't care. Actually the f word is the fifth largest word on my tumblr cloud. motherfing is my sixth. And I'm kind of proud of that. And it's not because I'm an immature child who thinks cussing is fun and silly... it's because that's who I am. I use curse words (primarily the f word) for emphasis. I know how to censor myself in situations that require it, and I do. I don't speak that way at school, I wouldn't at work, I don't speak that way here... But in my every day speech... that's how I talk. It's so quintessentially me. And when I speak, like out loud, I generally make a conscious decision to add those words in because they're there for emphasis.

A lot of people tell me all the time it's immature and childish and rude and whatnot... and a lot of people say things like you just did "some people are offended by that..." and I respond to all of them the same way: I do not care. I'm sorry that you're offended by the way I speak, but I'm offended by your offense. I'm not going to censor myself for you. I don't live my life for you, I live it for me. If you're so offended by the way I speak/type, don't listen to me/read my posts.

It's weird how you can be offended by other people's quirks, but you yourself get offended when people don't like yours.

I don't think that's so much etiquette as it is just how people are. They just might not like being rude! I know lots of people who would rather say nothing if they have nothing nice to say and I think that's cool! I don't think it's really something people can change on the internet 'cause it's just how they roll! I wouldn't say they're 'better than human', they just might not be comfortable letting that other side out.
