I'm thinking of changing my ISP, currently AOL, as depsite the 'cosmetic' perks they seem to be one of the most expensive broadband providers available now. I am currently paying £29.99 per month for up to an 8meg line, with unlimited download usage, although I am actually only getting just under 5meg most of the time.

So, I wanted to get some opinions on the ISP's here in the UK that I am looking at.

If you have any other suggestions that I have not mentioned please let me know. 🙂

I need to have the following:-

1. Up to 8meg
2. Unlimited download usage
3. Free Modem

Oh, and I forgot to mention I do not want to use NTL...bad experience with them, so I will never, ever use any of their services again 'lol' 😉

I've posted a poll for people to vote for the best ISP, but if you could post comments as well, that'd be really appreciated! 🙂

Thanks for your help folks!

We're on NTL hon, so I'll say no more. They're not the best company to deal with, are they? 🙂

My brother uses Tiscali and has never had any complaints with them that I know about.

My landlady has NTL and lets just say it freezes up every now and then,
plus i get syntax errors nuff said!
I don't really know what internet provider is good i haven't tried any other but i hear wannadoo is good.

Blueyonder if you can get it (we had it, but can't now. Long story.) Unlimited, often upgraded for free and other good stuff.

eeeek....not available in my area, & got redirected to NTL 'lol' they are all part of the same group now it seems...thanks anyway! :)
I used to have NTL, it was cheap and worked fine for me.. But I hated having to deal with these people, like, the email address on their site didn't work.. The phone number didn't work on a mobile phone (or from a different country, say, Sweden).. And they didn't show up the day they had promised to (making me miss school for nothing), didn't show up to collect their stuff when they promised to etc. etc. But yeah, as for the internet, it worked fine..

Thanks for the info everyone! 🙂

I was looking at Tiscali predominantly but didn't know anyone using it to find out if it was any good or not.

I'm still very undecided at the moment so will give it some more thought, sometimes it's a case of better the devil you know....etc

Plus, knowing my luck I would end up with no internet for ages changing ISP's 'lol'

Thanks again everyone! 🙂

I don't know if this helps you any -

BT tops 'broadband speed tests'

The type of cable coming into a house can affect connection speeds
British Telecom is currently the best performing ADSL UK internet service provider (ISPs), says a net survey.
Data on all of the leading consumer ISPs in the UK were collected by internet testing firm Epitiro.

The firm used software that connected to services every 15 minutes to test various features including download times and connection failures.

Results from 10 locations around the UK identified BT as top followed by Virgin, Demon, AOL and then Orange.

The survey did not take into account broadband provided by cable companies such as NTL Telewest.

It's an article from BBC News, which I noticed today. The full article is at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/5181524.stm
