Does anyone have one??? Any adice for me who has one and wont leave me alone? What precautions do people take whilst there on the net?

Exclude said person in any programs that you can - like MS or AOL or Yahoo messenger, BBS's etc. Don't respond to them at all. Get a good firewall to stop them attacking your PC. Report un wanted attention to your/their ISP.
There may be legal solutions if it gets desparate - but I'm no lawyer - I do remember reading that stalking qualifies as "mental" GBH under current legislation. Keep a diary of incidents (and evidence if you have any).
Citizens Advice Bureau, Childline (if you're a young 'un), Samaritans (if things are getting on top of you) are all very worthy organisations who may be able to help and I'm sure there are many others...

Whoaah have you had a stalker??? He's not really nasty but he follows me around in chat rooms and stuff like that. I'm just going to try to block him from everything i go on see if that works!
The police are taking this form seriously now and Mr Pointy is correct it does form GBH and it is also covered by the Computer Misuse Act. But before you contact their ISP you will need a log that proves what is going on, as they won't do anything if you don't. As when you sign up with your ISP you are therefore entering a contract agreeing to the T&C's part of which will contain a section regarding the misuse of the service for harrasment, flaming and other criminal purposes.
Because the internet is now allowing old crimes to be commited in new ways, the current laws are pretty entrenched and do not cover them since they were brought into force before the net existed. There is also the complications of the fact you may be resident in one country and the criminal party is resident in another, it all depends on whether or not that country is party to relevant treaties which govern the international laws of this. It is likely that they will as thats what its been put into place.

Never had a stalker - just old (and possibly wise). As Faith said you shouldn't have to put up with some sicko getting their jollies offa you being scared/irritated/angry. Sounding like an elder statesman again - comes with the territory of being a grandad I guess. Don't do chat rooms but they sound like too much hard work if you're getting hassled...

Thanks for all the help and advice, especially Old Master, it's nice to see that this is such a welcoming and friendly board. I've now blocked him from my Instant messenger and blocking form contacting me in chat, same for my email. Thanks all, i hope this is the last i've heard from him so we'll have to see.

carlyh, if this is a problem you have in chatrooms, I think, you should talk to the admins there.
I had a problem like this, too. I tried to ignore that person, I didn't hear from her for some weeks and suddenly she was back again. Ignoring didn't help - she stalked me for about 5 months! I finally spoke to the admins of the chatroom. They talked to her and as she went on stalking me they banned her. Well, they actually had to ban her 3 times, because every time she was banned she logged in with a new nick. Finally they blocked off her IP from their site so she couldn't register another name.
There are so many sick people on the internet...

I agree,Sick sick peeps.As long as you havent given any dtails about you self to them you should be pretty fine,eg.phone number,address etc.
