Internships

Our world-class, summer performing arts festival presents local, national and international music, dance, spoken word and film. The Festival has a reputation for excellence that attracts over 250,000 attendees from across New York City to its large, first-class outdoor venue. Past performers include Cake, Toshi Reagon, the Flaming Lips, Roseanne Cash, Gavin DeGraw, Erykah Badu, Maceo Parker, Savion Glover, the Brooklyn Philharmonic and special guest Prince.

The Venue

The venue is the best of its kind in NYC including full backstage facilities; a motorized production stage roof; computerized lighting control and moving fixtures; 35mm film projection; image-mag video projection; and touring-quality main, distributed and monitor audio systems. We feature an SLS speaker system and Whole Hog II with moving lights.

Who We’re Looking For

Interns will work directly with the Production Manager, Technical Director, Stage Manager, Lighting Director, Audio Engineers, and other staff in a challenging (but fun!) professional environment - come work with Broadway designers and industry pros. Successful candidates will play a key role in one of the following areas: Production Management, Stage/Company Management, Audio, Video or Lighting.

Those interested should be very reliable, committed individuals willing to work to the entire summer production schedule, which runs approximately May 21through August 24. You don’t have to know everything from the start - just be willing to learn. Although these are not paid positions, it is a great opportunity to work in a professional environment with high production values. For those with more experience, we have a small number of apprentice positions available, which have a stipend attached. We provide local travel expense, meals on show days, and complete assessments as required by your educational institution for students to receive course credit. For those who do an outstanding job, a letter of recommendation will also be written at the end of the internship.

Position Descriptions

Production Assistant Interns
Assists Production Manager and Production Coordinator advancing shows. Confirm artist technical, hotel, ground travel and hospitality requirements. Maintains and distributes production schedules. Reviews artists’ audio requirements with Audio Director, orders artists’ stage backline, and provides artist hospitality requirements to Stage Management Interns.

Stage Management Interns
Coordinates artists’ stage entrance at show time, intermission, etc. Prepares artist hospitality in green room and dressing rooms. Purchases supplies for artist hospitality. Communicates last-minute artist concerns to appropriate staff. Come work directly with our fabulous and high-profile artists!

Lighting Interns
Assists Lighting Director with programming, hang and focus of lights, and coordination of artists’ lighting and/or video requirements. Assists Master Electrician with lighting focus, circuiting and trouble shooting electrical problems with lighting grid. Acts as follow-spot operator during show.

Audio Interns
Assists Front-of House, Monitor and Deck Audio Engineers with sound-check, setup, mixing and changeover of equipment on stage. Coordinates sound requirements from various artists. Troubleshoots audio problems onstage during show. Come work with our state of the art concert line-array sound system!

Not Just Any Other Festival

We’re a high profile festival with state of the art facilities - but we also work with a small team. That means you will have the opportunity to really get in there and participate hands-on to make shows happen. You won’t be just a number, and you won’t spend your days getting coffee and doing all the boring jobs. You will be one of us, right there beside the rest of the staff members. For interns that distinguish themselves, there is the opportunity to return the following summer as apprentices (which garner a stipend) and even to return in full paid staff positions.

I just can't imagine why!!! 😉

Y'know, ten years ago this would have been something I would have jumped at. The idea of working Stateside, especially in New York, was always something that I considered. These days I'm far too tied to consider it (in no small part due to a business that won't run itself) but I'd recommend this opportunity to anyone who has the freedom to take it.
