Invisible girl question

You know what I didn't get? How Marcy was COMPLETELY ignored. If she had parents or siblings, then at least SOMEONE had to notice her, right?
 
I don't think it mattered if she WAS completely ignored as long as she FELT completely ignored. Like Buffy says in S7, "There's this thing that happens on the Hellmouth where the way a thing feels is the way it is."
 
Exactly what BB said. Marcie felt ignored, she wasn't exactly completely ignored. Her parents would have paid attention to her but that wasn't the attention she wanted- she wanted the populars to like her and pay attention to her so it was there lack of, that made her feel ignored enough to become invisible.
But she was a very shy girl (so she wasn't overly noticed by teachers and classmates) who had some weird wicked obsession with being one of the populars and when they rejected and ignored her, she, I think, felt like it was end of the worldy and she fell into a 'Nobody loves me, everybody hates me, think I'll go and eat worms' mood which in Hellmouth-World translates into 'Turn invisible'.
 
Never knew that Clea DuVall appeared on the show, really like her.

Just when it seemed Cordy had a heart, she reverted to being an insentive twit again.

But you still can't help but love her.

I agree, Charisma delivered those lines really well... And then she was back to form. LOL
Anyway, she says that Marcie should have become visible as soon as she touched anyone or when people started noticing what she was doing, because invisible things can't interact with the physical world (if they do, they start interacting with the light spectrum again and hence become visible)

Buffyverse physics - the observation above kinda reminds me of cartoon physics - where the coyote can run off a cliff and stay suspended in mid-air until he looks down and realizes that he is suspended, at which point he starts falling. Apparently visibility can sometimes work in the same way in the Buffyverse (in s7, when someone is just starting to turn invisible), but once they've been that way too long, we shift to a new physics. I wonder if there's a physics commentary in that book on Xander getting split into 2 parts in one episode of s5. Now i'm all curious to read that book...
 
I think this episode is kinda a shout out to all those bullies at school.
How it can really hurt someone and change them for the worst.
 
I think the episode also states that Marcie has actually been missing or invisible for quite a while, weeks or months. I think that is a big reason why Marcie can't come back. One of those point of no return type situations.
 
It's worth noting that the girl in S7 who Buffy slaps is way too cute to go ignored for long. No insult to Clea DuVall, but she is rather plain.
 
yeah well you can get ignored even if you're physically attractive. That's like saying "you're pretty so you can't have problems"... doesn't really work like that.

I agree. There are a lot of people who are truly beautiful, but still and unpopular. Just look, most of the celebreties, who are now voted for the prettiest and sexiest people on the planet were bullied and ignored in school.
 
Well, I was kinda just kidding. But while I accept what you guys are saying, it does fit into the 'Joss regularly casts actors that are more attractive than the characters they play' theory.
 
Well, probably it was too late for Marcie, who was already invisible for months! The other girl was on her way for getting invisible, so Buffy saved her. Anyway, the first season wasn't planned at all, I mean it was just the monster of the week. There are so many things from 1st season they never used again, and they all have been left with open end, like the eggs of the biology taecher, or the school of invisible guys for the army.

I have a feeling that those weren't really cliffhangers so much as indications that pervasively 'creepy things still happen in this town, even off-camera'. I think they wanted to leave things open-ended so that it didn't seem like Sunnydale was mainly normal
but with occasional bouts of weirdness that the Scoobies would solve and return things to normal. Catherine being trapped in that statue is a half-example - Oz mentions it, but only in passing.
