Invisible mode? Why use it?

Fairly straight forward question but one that's had me wondering for a while now. Why do some BB users (or any forum, for that matter) choose to use the invisible mode to hide when they are on the board?

Not that there is any problem with doing so. I just wondered what people's reasons were. 😉

Simple answer is that sometimes I don't wish to speak to people, I just come online to do a simple check. If they see me online I might get a PM to chat and i'm not always in the mood. If I post, then its evident i'm online so I don't mind the PM then.

i have no reasonable explination as to why i use the invisible mode...only that i used it on the last site i was a member of 'cause i was avoiding someone and i didn't want them to know when i was online. and i've been using it ever since.
besides, i like surprising people with random postings when they think i'm not here! lol

My answer is basically the same as Alisters. Sometimes I just cant be bothered talking. Same reason I look like Im offline on MSN most of the time.

I don't use the invisible mode, but I can see why people would use it. But if I am on msn, I am on msn... I don't go on if I don't want to talk. If I get a PM on here and am too busy to read it... I simply wont read it until I have the time, thats why I don't bother using the invisible mode, because to me there wouldn't be a point. You can tell when people come online anyways when they post but they arent online as Lyri said and they have posted you know they are on..so to me yeah no point.. but I can see why some of you might

It didn't really occur to me that you would be using it for that, if I'm honest. Probably because I don't chat on MSN an awful lot anyway. I rarely offer out my MSN or Yahoo addresses. Not because I wouldn't want to chat to any of you guys but because I just don't have the time for it, for the most part.

It's one thing to post around here in between whatever I'm doing online for work because I can just switch between windows when I have a spare minute or two to post but it's a lot harder to concentrate on work when you are having an MSN convo with somebody so I pretty much just stopped using it for anything other than work related chats.

But thanks for the answers guys. It was actually you three (BotD, Lyri and Wicked) that I'd noticed doing it so I guess that's my question answered! 😉

You are all so civil. I tend to just ignore someone if I can't be bothered responding. I mean that in general, my apathy is not just restricted to the internet. On occasion I will just stare at you. That pretty much unnerves people to the point that they stop polluting my brain with their silly noise.

It never took long to figure out when I had a new name. Usually about the first or second post. 😛

I use invisible mode on AIM occasionally, especially if there's only one or two people I want to talk to, but I never do on message boards...I mean it's rare someone tries to start chatting anyway but if they do and I can't I just tell them that, it's fairly simple. 🙂

I never use the IM. If I get PMs and I'm too busy to reply, I don't read them until I have time. When I send them the response, I just tell them I'm sorry I couldn't reply before. And that's it 😀.
