Marvel have just released the first official trailer for Iron Man 3, coming in 2013.

Well, I think it's fricking awesome! Really, really looking forward to it. I think the first movie was great, but the second one was nothing special. It's a decent sequel, but it didn't blow my mind. Now this... this is more like it. Great cast, too. Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, as usual and also Guy Pearce and Ben Kingsley. Kingsley's voice sounds really cool in the trailer.
It also seems a lot darker than the two predecessors. I like that better in general. Not that I'd have anything about a few jokes and comedy, but I like it when they put much drama in a movie. Makes it more interesting to me, more gripping.
 
I loved the first one.
Loved the Avengers

but for some reason haven't seen more than opening few mins of Iron Man 2. (should change that before seeing the third.)

the trailer looks amazing though
 
Man, I love superhero movies.

That was an awesome trailer. Usually the third installment of any franchise, but superhero movies in particular (yes Spiderman 3, we're looking at you) isn't that strong, but The Dark Knight Rises broke that mold and Iron Man 3 looks incredible.

Just from inferring from the trailer, it looks like they're going to do the Extremis storyline. It's a famous, and relatively recent, Iron Man arc where the Iron Man armor is tremendously upgraded. It also looks, kind of, like they're going to attempt Demon in a Bottle, where Tony battles his alcohol problem.

The action in the trailer was excellent. The only reservation I have is Mandarin as the new villain. He's a crappy bad guy in the comics to begin with (like, really bad), and it's more than a little odd seeing them make an Asian character white. But, at the same time, Iron Man has always had terrible bad guys, but the first movie was still amazing. However, I think that held back Iron Man 2 (although that one had so many problems I don't even know where to start). In the comics, Iron Man is much more effective as the central Avengers character.

I don't know the Iron Man comics, so I don't know what Mandarin is like in the comics, but I think Ben Kingsley seems really great as a villain. And just because he was crappy (I can neither confirm nor deny this) doesn't mean he's crappy in the movie. In movies they can change a lot of stuff. Just look at the Batman movies, especially the Nolan movies. Nolan took basic story elements and characters and made them his own. Again, I don't know the comics, so I can't say how accurate the first two films are, but I don't mind if they'd alter some things, make up a more or less original story line.
Oh, and by the way, Ben Kingsley played Gandhi back in 1982 and his real name is Krishna Pandit Bhanji.

I am excited to see this. It looks incredible. I hope it's 10 million times better than the second one!

Very true. Christopher Nolan has a real talent for developing villains. He knows when something already works (Ra's al Goul is almost identical to his counterpart in the comics) and when there's potential but the equal need for revamping (Bane). Plus, he took the best of The Joker and tailored him perfectly to the movie.

But at the same time, Ra's and The Joker are two of the best comic villains of all time, and even Bane, who is pretty one-dimensional in the comics, is better than any of Iron Man's villains. I mean, Iron Monger from the first Iron Man movie was, in my opinion, the weakest part of the film. Mickey Rourke's character from Iron Man 2 was brutal. Still, you're right. There is a lot of leeway when translating print to screen. I don't know if you've seen Game of Thrones on HBO, but in S2 they took Jeyne Westerling from the books, Robb Stark's wife who wasn't seen much and was a pretty simple character, and transformed her into an amazing and totally altered character on the show. The same could very well happen in Iron Man 3.

I'm a little disappointed that Jon Favreau isn't returning to helm the series though. I'm a big, big fan of his. The new guy taking over for him, Shane Black, wrote the first two Lethal Weapon movies (which I loved) though, and he has previous directing experience working with Robert Downey Jr., so he seems to know how to design a good action movie.
 
I still haven't seen the 2nd one and I already wanna see this one!
 
It looks awesome. I was very disappointed with the second Iron Man film but had my faith restored after watching the Avengers. I cannot wait to see the third instalment and the trailer is very good, it gives just enough away without spoiling it and leaves you wanting to see more.

Love Iron Man & The Avengers. I think that this one looks to have taking a more dark turn,and will be less "fun" than the other two. The other two was more about a charismatic superhero who was laid back,funny,but was serious when needed,as in the Avengers he still had a very quirky attitude which was good. But from the trailer i think this one takes a more dark story line which could go either way.

Yes, but that's what I like about the trailer. I think there's still plenty of room for his 'quirky attitude' and some comedy, but I think it's very good that they're going for a darker story, something that changes the characters and the characters' lives.
Otherwise, it would be the same movie over and over again, just with a different villain and a happy ending. I'm not saying the first and second movie are like that, but if they'd continue this light-hearted style without a serious plot, the franchise would begin to suck after a while.
 
I love Superhero movies, so I'd watch this regardless of whether the trailer looked good. Saying that the trailer looks awesome and I cant wait to see it.

Anyone else think that Marvel Studios has just done an amazing job of making the actual Iron Man armor look amazing? Seriously, I thought that would be one of the hardest elements to do justice and translate effectively from the comic page to the movie screen, but it always looks incredible.

He was a few years back. However, since about 2006 Marvel has really transitioned Iron Man from a singular hero to being one of the centerpieces of the entire Marvel Universe. They've really pushed The Avengers books as the feature of Marvel (whereas it used to be Spider-Man), where Captain America and Iron Man are very firmly established as the main characters. They're the two characters the company is building around right now, which makes sense logistically withe movies being the smash hit that they are.

As such (to get back to your question), Iron Man's signature villains have gone from his own rogues gallery to being the Avengers' bad guys. He still has his own book and all but for the most part it deals with the fallout of the stuff that happens in Avengers. I've been reading both Iron Man and all the Avengers books for years now and I haven't seen one story with Mandarin in it, to tell you the truth.

That's always been sort of the problem with Iron Man. Really cool, interesting hero with absolutely terrible villains.
