Is After The Fall Canon?

I have reread my comics and I wonder is this series canon? I'm asking because they have included that annoying fish Betta George whereas he wasn't in the show.

Also they've included Kate in the First Night mini-series. I mean why? She was axed in the first season. Why not include Harmony or somebody who has been in the show longer?

I don't count this series as Official Season 6. What do you all think?

Kate was in Season 2. She was around when Darla was pretending to be a normal person and that Angel was crazy.

The fish was in Brian's other comics and Joss liked him, so he okayed him.

But, they are canon.

Oh yes...its been a few months since I've watched season 2. Note to self: time for a re-watch.

And Kate wasn't axed btw. The actress got a regular character on Law and Order or something. But yeah, ATF doesn't seem particulary canon to me. It's just not very good... (what I've read, anyway.)

Yeah I heard Joss isn't all that active in ATF compared to s8 thats why many of the characters act/speak differently then they do in ATS

Yeah, it's canon, it's just BORING canon. I keep hoping that something will happen to bring some kind of order to the chaos, but it hasn't happened yet. On the other hand, maybe all this confusion and disorder is intentional. They are in hell, after all. I guess an eternity of boredom qualifies as torture.

Personally, I hate the Angel comics. The one good thing about them is that they brought Connor back as a regular. The only reason I buy them/read them is because I'm a fan, and therefore, I think I should read them. I've gotten so fed up with them that I've fallen behind somehow, and I've managed to miss three issues! I mean, how could that have happened?! lol

My personal opinion aside, yes, unfortunatly After the Fall is canon, psychic fish and all.

One thing we should probably think about regarding canon is Lynch's other Angel works. Betta George appeared in another of Lynch's Angel comics. As he's now canon in the offical uofficial season 6, does that make the other comic he appeared in canon, too?

Oh man, I'm glad someone finally said it. This book is not canon. First of all, it's different from the show. The TV show didn't have panels or word balloons or fish or staples. The comic has all of these in spades (well, not staples, there are only two...but that's two more than the show).

And I heard that Joss doesn't even know that this book is out. I heard that IDW and Bryan Lynch had to find someone named "Joss Whedon" and ask him to co-plot it just so they could put that name on the cover.

I think in the future, if people want to bore me, they shouldn't. This book is boring, and as such, I will only buy two of the four available covers for each issue.

My mom just passed and said "what are you getting so uppity about while typing on the computer". I told her it was a thread about a comic based on a show that was spun-off from a Kristy Swanson vehicle and she said "oh, they made a show based on THE CHASE? Is Charlie Sheen in it?" I rolled my eyes.

That said, a THE CHASE comic would be more entertaining than ANGEL:AFTER THE FALL. Unless they put a fish in it.

I am not too thrilled with ANGEL either. In fact I haven't bought it since April. I gotta go get them though. I hear there aren't gonna be as many as Buffers though thankfully. I am not that into it.

I've bought the Origin comic, Buffy Season 8, AtF, Spike:AtF, and Fray. Is Spike:Shadow Puppets and Spike:Asylum considered canon because it has the same team (minus Whedon) as Angel:AtF? If David Fury or Jane Espenson wrote a Buffyverse comic without Joss's official approval would you consider it canon?

What does everyone else think?

Its only canon if Joss says so! lol This is the Whedonverse afterall... Only things that are canon are AtF S8 and Fray and theres that 1 omnibus thats the real Buffy in LA but thats it... i think


On the upside of Angel: AtF the hardcovers quite nice even got its own little bookmark string! The string is fun to play with when your pissed cuz you realize that everyone is out of character... 🙂

Ah, there's the question and the answer is...it depends. It will follow from the events of Angel: After the Fall, it will continue that storyline and subsequent storylines will follow from it. So, yes, it's considered canon. That said, though, I know to many readers, if it didn't come from Joss Whedon himself, it's not canon, and I'm fine with that. If readers don't like my contribution to this amazing universe, they're free to dismiss it as some kind of alternate reality blip in the series. Just pretend it never happened. :lol

Therefore It's just as canon as AtF is...

it is unfortunate that joss hasnt had a larger role in keeping the writer of ATF on a good path. its really sad to read the comics when i know exactly what the writer is trying to do, but he/she just doesnt do it.

reading atf is like taking a test and not getting a grade. very unsatisfying; especially if you studied alot.

Well, I like ATF.
The only people that really seem all that out of character are Connor (who has never really settled on a character part to be INTO) and Nina and Gwen, but I don't think I ever got to know them well enough for them to be "in" character.

Sure, Lorne said he wouldn't come back, but he's an old softie.
No one else bothers me at all.

The only thing that saddens me is that the series left in such a mess that any attempt to address the actual mess needs a more smooth medium than I think a comic can pull off well.

Buffy can be done in chapter type parts. Faith can be doing her thing, Buffy hers, Dawn hers and occasionally they can muddle.
But, with Angel, it was kind of forced to start as a big muddle. And I'm not sure any comic, with it's limits of length and general medium, can work it's way out of such a muddle without it feeling choppy and confusing to the reader.
The only other real option would have been to just skip the alley story and move on like it didn't happen and then occasionally refer back to it and be a big tease.

I certainly am not bothered by the fish. I find him a LOT more believable than Lorne's weird Karaoke Aura reading or that Xander is now Super Commander Together guy.

I'm just not disappointed. I'd rather this than never knowing what happened in the alley or covering it all in 1 book and then hopping onto something else right away.
