Is Angel Stronger when.........

I've been following since the trailer........possibly missed a half dozen episodes between then and now.
It seems that Angel usually starts fighting in his "human" look and then goes all "Vamp" when he wants to kick a little more booty.
They've never said anything about this but........it would lead me to think he gains more strength when he's in "Vamp" mode.
What's you take on this?

Having just bought S1 on DVD I notice this a lot more often........

Yes it is true Angel becomes relatively stronger in vamp mode according to Joss Whedon. Because when he vamps out, obviously it brings a little bit more of the demon inside him.

But he's only mildly stronger, not significantly stronger.

Doyle was also said to be stronger with his demon face on. In Angel S1, Angel could rip open a door (with vampface), but in Buffy's "What's My Line? Part 2" epi, he couldn't break a bicycle lock (no vampface)!
