Is Buffy a bottled blonde?

In the flashbacks where Buffy witness her cousin's death in "Killed by Death" Buffy is a brunette, so is she a bottled blonde?
 
Of course. The correct question though is, how come the little Buffy we saw in The Weight of the World is blonde while the one from Killed by Death is brunette.

But it's obvious she dyes her hair. You can see dark roots.

The answer to your question is both simple and obvious, and can be summed up in a five words or less:

Because. Mommy. Allowed. It.

Little Buffy probably wanted blond hair because of seeing someone else with that color hair and liking it. What other reason would a California Girl need to change her "look?"

Well, I was more wondering about the fact that from both childhood flashbacks, we can see little Buffy with two hair colors. And the weird thing, the blonde came before the brunette. What, did she stop coloring her hair? Even for a Californian girl, at that age it doesn't make much sense.

In season 5 they wanted us to relate that little girl to the Buffy we know, so they decided to cast a blonde girl, so it would fit. The only thing I'm thinknig, sometimes people's hair color changes natually. So I guess she was born blonde, her hair color faded during the years, and then she started dying it blonde. We know SMG's natural color is brown though.
 
I'm gonna go ahead and say no, I don't think Buffy was a bottled blonde. I think Sarah was a bottled blonde, because Buffy was supposed to be blonde, not because she was supposed to be a 'fake' blonde... I.e. I think Buffy's bottled blonde look was an unfortunate accident due to the casting of a brunette actress

The casting of the child actors I would guess boils down to what the casting person thought looked most believable to have been SMG as a child, and whether or not said child had the appropriate acting skills, thereby overlooking e.g. haircolor (ones sees it all the times with characters who in flashbacks suddenly are blue eyed as kids and browned eyed as adults. Can it be annoying? Sure, I mean why not spring for a blonde kid? But hey, end of the day, maybe it just wasn't a viable option.)

Yes, definitely. She makes reference to it in the show, I believe.

I think with the flashback issue, I was blonde until I was about 3, then my hair colour naturally darkened to brunette.

It happens all the time with little kids.

I had blonde yhair when I was a little kid too. 🙂
 
I think tow-headed kids can become darker as they age, but it typically doesn't go the other way. Basically I bet that Joss couldn't get the same actress, or chose another actress for some reason (actress had aged and he wanted a younger Buffy, or he decided that he did want a blonde after all, etc).

But I do not think that Buffy is supposed to be a bottle blonde. There is not a single reference to Buffy coloring her hair on the show that I can think of. And some blondes do have darker roots naturally.

The reference I thought she made was to a "cream rinse", which I thought was to do with the colour, not the consistency of the thing :)

Having dark roots would be fine, if SMG's blonde wasn't a completely different blonde every season haha 😉

I actually got the impression that she wans't meant to be natural blonde. They didn't have to mention it this way or another, because it's not really important for the script or the plot.

Also, even if as a kid she was blonde and then it turned dark (because the flashback from Killed by Death was with an older Buffy than the one from The Weight of the World), the fact that it turned dark and today is blonde, means that she did dye it blonde. And in season 1, Buffy's hair was almost brunette.

No, "cream rinse" is just another term for conditioner.

Yep, realise that now!
I figured she was supposed to be a natural blonde. But from what you guys have said in here I think my favourite explanation is that she was blonde, it went dark, so she dyed it blonde again.

Bottled or natural, I like that she stayed blonde throughout the show even if it did change shades a lot!
