Is Buffy about sex?

I'm writing an essay on Buffy, so naturally I've been reading a lot about Buffy lately, and found this in the book "Buffy the Vampire Slayer and philosophy":

”Forget the vampire stuff: it’s just window-dressing. Buffy Summers is the classic ’girl next door’: a paradoxically unstable object of both love and desire. She, and to a lesser extent Willow, are a voyeur’s delight, perfectly-suited objects for teenagers-both boys and girls-to project and direct their narcissistic (and other) fantasies towards.”

The authors of this essay go on and on about Buffy being only about schoolgirl-sex and etc. And saying that there is no deeper meaning in Buffy than that!

I really DON'T agree! I think Buffy is about so much more! I love the show for a lot of reasons, none of them is sex. What do you think? What are the reasons you watch Buffy?

That about sums it up.
Why do I watch Buffy? Three reasons:

1) The writing.
2) The brilliant writing.
3) The bloody brilliant writing.

The fantasy trappings are what attracted me to the series and I kept coming back for the writing. The show was one of the best written shows on TV at the time and, quite possibly, ever. Very few shows could swing from comedy to drama to horror to incredible agnst in the same 44 minute episode. Buffy did it and with style.

Did I also watch it for the hot chicks? Well, yeah. I am a guy. 🙂
 
That is so true phoenixrising! It is hard to combine all those together and make a really great show. Plus you watch it for the hot chicks, phoenixrising,I watch it for the hot guys! hehe. Like David Boreanaz!😀 But some of the stuff is to do with sex. Cuz most teenagers think about sex. But not all of Buffy has to do with sex!

I agree.

I watch Buffy for the great plots and characters. If I just happen to think about sex when Eliza Dushku is on screen its mearly a coincidence 😛.
 
You can't say that a show that has Eliza, Alyson, Charisma and Sarah in isn't aimed at pleasing the eyes. Its going to happen but its what I lot of shows use, I mean c'mon, how many of us know people that look like Jennifer Aniston? The media industry is a prettied up version of reality.

However I didn't start watching Buffy for the attractice people, I watched it because I liked the storylines and the like.
 
Who wrote that article? Have you any idea of that person's educational background? It sounds like a classic example of feministic cultural theory - for them, everything is about sex and narcissism. I should know, I've studied it for 1 1/2 years. 😉
 
That author sounds like many of my friends. None of them have ever really watched the show though. And I doubt this author has ever really watched the show, or been interested in seeing what the show is about.
Yes, Buffy is a good looking girl. Yes many of the characters are teenagers. Does that mean anything at all? Not really. TV show people usually are more or less attractive, like it or not. But I hate that the fact that they are so young make people believe it can't be serious or deep. And I cannot for my life understand how someone who is supposed to know this show (as I'm guessing the author of that essay is), can't understand that...
 
God I love this board, someone named Scary Bunny asks "Is Buffy about sex?". Don't know about you guys, but I think that's kinda funny.

To the point. To some extent Buffy is about sex, but it's about so much more, it's about life. Then again if you are a Freudian that's the same thing, but I'm not so. Buffy is about all of the things that happen in life, but is presented as an analogy using a whole lot of fantasy subtext to show the mundane text.

Also it's tv and need to sell and sex and good looking girls and boys sell, but contrary to many other shows it has a message about what it is like being a human being that you have to pick up if you want the sex.

Whoever wrote that must be sexist or some horny dude.

Buffy goes waaay beyond beautiful people and ditzy girls. The show is about life and how we strive to be a part of this world.

Granted Season 6 was a bit heavy, but it showed how a persons life can go in a downward spiral of darkness, where doing irrational things seems like the right thing to do. (Hope this makes sense)

I watched Buffy because the storylines are watchable and gripping and because I love the fight scenes 😀

two male proffesors of philosophy it seems, (Michael P. Levine and Steven Jay Schneider), of course they quoted Freud on several occasions.. For people who are into Freud everything seems to be about sex too..
 
Okay, whoever wrote that article has no idea what they're talking about. If Buffy was only about the 'hot chicks', then why would the females of the species like me watch it? I watch it for the fabulous acting and the storylines.
 
I feel that on the surface, people who have only seen a couple epps or no epps at all just see a pretty, sexy blonde girl kickin butt in tight clothes and boots. To them, it oozes sex.

But to those people who actually watch the show, get intwined in the characters and the story arcs, the show goes way beyond that. Buffy is not the only character, as many people think. Yes, the other characters are all gorgeous, but it is TV. That's what stars are basically, a pretty face.

So, no, I don't believe it's about sex. I think it has two major themes that people do not understand unless they put a lot of time and interest into the show. The show is about female power (but not quite too overfeministic) and about the everyday trials and tribulations of life, whether it be breaking nails or fighting demons that affect you on a personal level.
