Is Buffy Becoming Like Charmed?

I ask this question because throughout the entire run of both Buffy and Angel there seemed to be a set mythology and certain types of creatures that you would expect to see and even hear about, however we get to Season 8 of Buffy and we find out that there is indeed an Underworld (like Charmed), and is this Underworld in another dimension or just under the streets? Also is there an Underworld everywhere or what? We also discover that there are fairies...since when? We discover that there are giants a la Dawn, Centaurs are real, trees can talk, Ogres are real, and giant birds and rabbits are real too...I mean what else are they gonna introduce leprachauns, elves, gnomes, we already know they have trolls.

You make a good point but there is one issue in the world of fiction; there's only so many stories, you know? It's bound to happen that ideas/plots will get reused.
From the couple episodes I have seen of Charmed, I would hardly compare the two shows; Buffy is much higher in quality in my opinion. Sorry 🙂

What I meant is this whole magickal community. It seemed as the years went on Charmed became more and more of a fairy tale world then what it started as

I never watched "Charmed," but I would like to point out that all of the action in seven years of "Buffy" and five years of "Angel" took place in a single part of the world: Los Angeles and Sunnydale, so close together that it was possible to travel between the two by automobile overnight. That leaves a whole lot of world never depicted in either show, and it only stands to reason that the demon community would be no different from any other species in the planet. Each group would have its own habitat. Therefore we would be no more apt to see a Himalayan Yeti in the Sahara desert than we would to see a Siberian tiger in New York City (outside of a zoo and controlled climate, of course).

There are no giants, centaurs, fairies, or talking trees around either the Sunnydale or Cleveland hellmouths. That doesn't mean that they don't exist anywhere else in the world. Most of the assorted demons that Buffy encountered in Sunnydale were humanoid in size and form, but that doesn't have to imply that all demons everywhere have to be like that. Buffy and her people are now assumedly scattered around the globe, in all kinds of different habitats, and it seems only logical to assume that more and more new demonic species will be encountered as time goes by.

WHOA! If ALL that stuff actually happens in S8, that is a WHOLE lot of spoilerish stuff I wish I hadn't read. That being said, NO! Buffy will never become anything like Charmed... even in comic book form (I'm still mid getting through it) the quality, IMO, is far better than Charmed ever was (no offense)... my guess would be all of those fantasy things you mentioned are just included because they suit comic form better than they could have been implemented on TV.

I do see your point and it had never ocurred to me before- but now that is, I'm wondering whether that might have been the subconscious reason that I slowly fell out of habit of buying season 8.

I appreciate what WA said about since the show having been so limited in location there are numerous worlds unexplored, but I used to watch Charmed back in the good ole days when it had potential. But I thought the more it went into fairytaledom with leprechauns (shudders) and fairies and ogres the more I found it to be ridiculous and pointless and it became purely for light entertainment in the background more than a show I could become involved in and truly enjoy....my opinion is that season 3 on of Charmed is terrible, whereas 7 year of Buffy was pure gold. And I know comic book gives them a lot more availability since they aren't limited by actors and CGI etc etc but I hope they just don't over-board Charmed style.

Ironically, considering it is a sci-fi fantasy show, I like a bit of groundedness and realism to allow me to believe in the supernatural part of it all- and fairies and ogres and all the things from fairytales stretches it a little too much for me (even though, ironically, I would like to believe such creatures exist in our world! Haha!)

All that said, I have fallen out of the season 8 comics so maybe I am not the best judge...or the right person to answer this thread/

white avenger makes a good point...However, unicorns and such feel extremely out of place in Buffy. Maybe the writers do shrooms before coming up with their ideas.

A unicorn and a talking tree would not have been on the show, ever. I feel fairly confident in saying that. And that's even if the budget wasn't a factor.

I think the comics have been like Charmed all along...from the first issue. Plain flat-out ridiculous.

While I dont think S8 is becoming to much like Charmed S5-8, I do think it has a drop of it. I have hated seeing all of these magical creatures in the issues they show up in which is most likely why I skip over the scenes they are in. S1-7 has always portrayed a more serious world and darker in every way espically when it came to magic. But Joss is taking to many libterties with Buffy being a comic book. I know that this form lets him do anything he wants that he couldnt have on the show but he has gone overboard at times which make me roll my eyes at first when I read/look at it. But I wouldnt mind if we never see any of these magical creatures again espically since the Scotland base was blown up.
