Is "Conversations with Dead People" a fan favorite?

I think it's good, but I don't like it that much. But I think many other people really love it.
And of course they can like a Season 7 episode although they dislike Season 7 as a whole. My least favorite season is Season 4, but I think Hush is amazing.

Let's put it this way, I think it's not one of the strongest episode of the series, but it's one of the strongest in s7. So yes, for s7 specifically, I think it's a fan favorite. For the entire run, I doubt the episode would make it in too many people's top 10.

I don't think it's a fan favorite overall.
It's just the way it was presented that makes it pop out more than a lot of episodes in that season. Much like Hush and The Body (except that this last one was included in a much stronger season in general).
Conversation was so different than what we'd seen so far during S7. Also, Buffy's "psychotherapy" gave us insight on how she saw herself. A point of view that we rarely got to see because she always hid it under emotions easier to decipher for the public, imo.
Anyways, I think it was a great episode and it would be in my top 10 overall, but I don't believe it's the case in general. For many people, it doesn't compare to S2, S3 and S5 episodes.

I hate it. It's definitely NOT one of my favorite eps. It's not even one of my - admittedly limited - favorite eps of S7.
There are many big things that happen in that ep, which I think is the reason why it's touted as being 'so good', big revelations, but I certainly don't think it's as good as I've seen some people say it is.

I've seen people rave about it, but I don't have any particularly strong feeling towards it one way or the other. The conversation between Buffy and Holden Webster is the best part of the episode, but the rest is just kind of...there for me. Not horrible, but not good. If I was composing a list of my Top 25 episodes of the series, it wouldn't even come close.

Eh, it sucks. There are two good things about it. One. Buffy's session with Holden, but if you were paying attention, there's nothing new there and although it is nice to hear Buffy admit things, it goes nowhere and leads to nothing. Two. "Blue" by Angie Hart, it's a pretty good song, nice lyrics too about Angel, Riley, Spike and Willow.
The rest sucks, it's content-free fluff. And where's Amber Benson for crying out loud? Willow's sequence is both weightless and pointless without her. So Willow misses Tara, yeah, no kidding captain obvious. And where's Xander? Seriously, where is Xander? It's "Once More, with Feeling" levels of garbage all over again, it's even worse because while Willow didn't sing she at least was present in that episode. Instead we get what, Dawn? How about Anya, wouldn't that be more interesting? Or Giles?
The episode stands out because of its structure and concept, not because of quality, still, it's a jewel among the sea of shit that's season 7, just a fake one, like made from plastic. "Conversations with Dead People" - acrylic jewel in the ocean of fecal matter.

Amber Benson was asked to return for this episode, but she said no. She didn't want Tara's memory to be tainted by her appearing as The First.
She was also asked to return for the end of the season, but couldn't for scheduling reasons.

I don't see why we should care about casting problems, if they couldn't get the actress for whatever reasons they should have written a different scene. Willow could be having a conversation with Jenny Calendar or even with Buffy.

I've never gotten the hype about the episode either. It's not bad, an interesting idea but the execution could have been much better. Dawn not actually able to talk to Joyce but being battered around by some ghost sucked. There should have been less of this and they should have included a scene with Giles and Jenny.
Jonathan and Andrew were annoying. I've said this before, a scene with both Xander and Anya facing one of Anya's past vengeance victims would have been a far better way to use the time.
Maybe it was a casting issue who knows, but this episode could have been better in so many ways. The potential Xanya scene I suggests isn't even prevented by casting problems.

The only bug I see in the episode is that it made the First seem such scary and dangerous while in the rest of the season it was a quite disappointing Big Bad. It felt like in CWDP it used all its bullets...
In all the other forums/sites/blogs I've lurked it has always had a strong positive feedback, so I must say I'm surprised by some of the answers here 🙂

Loved this episode! It's not just the best of Season 7, it is one of the better episodes in the entire series.
Holden Webster plays a very believable psych major, unlike Riley who was supposed to be a T.A. in psych but never actually showed much interest other than in "The Replacement 5ABB03" saying that he wanted to lock the two Xanders in separate rooms and do experiments on them. Holden does move the story along by saying that Spike sired him. His psychoanalysis of Buffy was priceless - the best humour in Season 7. Great lines like:
"Buffy, I'm here to kill you, not to judge you."
"See, this is what I hate about you vampires. Sex and death and love and pain"”it's all the same damn thing to you."
"And I thought I was diabolical"”or, at least I plan to be. You do have a superiority complex. And you've got an inferiority complex about it. (laughs) Kudos."
The scenes with Dawn were quite unsettling and the monster attacking Joyce was actually Gnarl from "Same Time, Same Place 7ABB03", but we only get a rear view of the monster costume.
The setup with Willow was very well done, right up to the point where the fake Cassie turned inside out and swallowed herself.

ITA with this. I too really liked this episode. Very well done, interesting structure, creepy, nice use of original music.
