Is Dollhouse the modern day Charlie's Angels?

So I was watching this thing on Bravo today about the top Super Vixens blah blah blah. Buffy was #3, but on the list also was Charlie's Angels. And it got me to thinking...isn't Dollhouse a little like CA was, with the girls taking on different personas each episode.

Do you think Dollhouse is sort of a modern day take on the Angels?

Least you got a reply - granted it seems to just be incoherent tosh, a mix of words if you will that seemed to have just been typed for typings sake...much like this rep post!
Maybe, but dolls can be ken too.

I get a totally different vibe about this show, they aren't agents or grifters, they're kinda victims in my eyes, even though they signed up for it. I never really watched enough of the angels to give the comparison justice, though.

More like a modern day "Fantasy Island" without Harve Villachez. The clients pay an exorbitant amount of money to create whatever fantasy is their multi-millionaire's little heart's desire, and Mr Rourke, or the Dollhouse management, provide it. Of course, you got a better deal on Fantasy Island. You got not only the people, but also the entire setting constructed exactly to your requirements.
 
I definitely see the connection, but I didn't know what Charlies angels was until the movies cames out, I had pictured it more Sci-fi.

So there is definetly a small connection there but with a sci-fi twist.
 
It reminds me more of Quantum leap with a horror spin of 'aliens/monsters/plumbers that control your mind' 🙂
 
I can't really comment on the substance of the series, but I got a definite Charlies Angels vibe with some of the promo images, especially the ones with Echo and Sierra standing with the guns.
 
I'm not saying that this is like a remake of CA or something - I'm more thinking, could this be a modern version, could Joss have been influenced by it, etc
 
I think there are ALOT of TV shows that have influenced this show, but don't say it too loudly because the fans will get mightily pissed that we are suggesting Joss doesn't always have original ideas!

Are you simply playing dumb today or has it finally become time for you to accept it?

I've said many times that there are few shows that are original, however in another thread where I said that Dollhouse seemed to borrow from another show, people automatically said 'no'.

Jeez man, grab a clue.

I never got that impression. It leans heavily on the Matrix more than CA, IMHO. Now, by CA I mean the old series back in the '70's which, happily, I cannot remember very well (thank you, self-inflicted head trauma to the brain cells, a.k.a. college drinking marathons!), and I haven't as of yet seen the remakes. Old Aaron Spelling shows still give me a bad rash just by (accidentally) remembering them.

EDIT: Now that I think of it there's a lot of A Clockwork Orange in this Joss-o-matic Blender of ideas.
 
I don't see much Charlie's Angels in it. Well not yet anyway. It still reminds me of Alias combined with The Pretender.
 
Again, I'm not really thinking it should remind anyone of CA. I'm saying - when Joss was young and Charlie's Angels had 53% of television viewers at 10pm whatever night it was that it aired tuning in - that generation had these beautiful people taking on these "fantasy" roles (remember the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader episode?). Now we have this modernized version of the same concept.

When will you realise people in this place don't have the ability to understand you don't mean literally!
I know very little about CA, I'm probably way off, but I think of Baywatch when somebody mentions CA. Which is odd because I haven't actually seen either.

Anyway, is this the sort of show Joss would have watched? I saw him say in an interview that he was a tv snob when he was younger.

Of course the Feminist Crusader watched it!

Hehe, I might start calling Joss FC from now on - I know two other words that fit nicely into that and it works a) because I don't like him b) because the feminists I know, hate the word I would use for C!

I'm sure Joss did watch Charlies Angels. I can see some Sabrina in Buffy, not so much Jill and Kelly, but Sabrina was a good example of the female empowerment role that he hoped to achieve with Buffy.
Yes I was slightly obsessed with Charlies Angel's as a kid. They were just so pretty. 🙂
 
When you're creative you take little pieces of other peoples art and incorporate it into your own. Trying to improve on the original piece. It is not always a conscious thing. If Joss did watch CA, I have no doubt a part of that influenced not just DH but all his work. That's what art is,.

OK, you've written this a lot of times. You want it made clear that you don't like Joss Whedon. I have a few theories why, but if you don't mind answering, what is it that you don't like about him?

There are PLENTY of threads with my reasoning - do a little detective work because I'm not feeling in the mood to write my reasons out, again!
I think Joss should send us a little nod by having the makeup dept. give Eliza some totally awesome Farrah Hair! 😀
 
I can see a little CA influence in Dollhouse, but to me....and maybe it IS just me, it REALLY reeks of La Femme Nikita. I know, I love that show so much, I see influences of it everywhere, but I really do think that!
