I've been wondering for some time 'Is Giles a member of the Scoobies or is just outside the circle?'

He's an adult, member of staff at the school, a watcher and rarely hangs out with them (understandably).

I feel like he's a Scoobie - he is one of the core four after all. And until Willow got more advanced he did a lot of the researchy magic stuff I feel.

Yeah, I always felt like he was a scoobie as well. But due to his age, job, experience etc he wasn't limited to just being within that group as the rest of the scoobies were. Yes, he was a scoobie but he also belonged (at least some of the series) to the Watchers, he was in the group of Sunnydale Staff and we can presume he had adult friends in general. So while he was a scoobie I think it's safe to say it wasn't his only idenitity/circle.
I mean even at the end of season 7 after the whole Giles/Buffy riftiness I think you can see him being totally still in the heart of the core four so I never saw him as an outsider to the group at all.

Yeah, I think he is too. They weren't very Scoobie like when he left, after all. I think he's one of the gang. He turns up at the Bronze far too often for a person of his age that isn't!

Ditto on the Bronze comment. If the Stones can keep on rolling, why not Giles? ;)
No, I dont think that Giles was ever a scoobie; to me the scoobie gang was always the 'kids' at school. Never saw him as a scoobie and really surprised others did.

Wrong, wrong, wrong! :p
I did, especially in season 4. He was kind of out on his own, yet he played such an important role in the group. In the very least, he was a Senior Scooby Advisor (much like a news channel has a Senior Legal Advisor... but with less suits and ties).

I'd never even put this into question before though, I just assumed he was.

See, that's the thing though, he really was just a big kid at the school. That's why he got so close - they spent all their time with him in the library up until graduation. That's why, although Angel, Cordelia, Oz, Jenny, etc. were often around, they never were quite "Scoobies". They had other friends, other groups to be a part of. I agree with Joyce that Giles did have a life beyond that, but it was definitely at the centre of his life. It never was for the others that hovered on the outside. After Graduation, the relationships had been forged. Once a Scoobie, always a Scoobie.

lmfao "Giles was scooby doo, and wesley was scrappy!"

haha.
i've never really thought of him as a scoobie, i just thought it was a school kind of thing too. (young thing)

lol

Was Giles a scoobie? He was like the King of the Scoobies,
made even more evident when he played and sang Freebird by Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Thats why he got so close, yes, but I dont think THEY got close. They spent all their time in the library but not necessarily with him. He was just a part of the library. Xander himself in later seasons was de-scoobified, which is when Xander and Giles actually started to bond; because both wanted to be a scoobie and neither were.

It is my position that Giles' status in/with the group was more pseudo-parent, friend, mentor, than actual Scoobie.

Giles was no more a Scoobie than Oz or Angel.

He was like the King of the Scoobies,
made even more evident when he played and sang Freebird by Lynyrd Skynyrd.
While the song did illustrate his disassociation from normal society, I thought it also served as a bittersweet reminder of how he didn't fit in. To society or to the scoobies. Giles was a man alone; he was an island. The Isle of Giles.

Yes he's a Scoobie. He's from the core four, he's like the father-figure of the group. He cares about all of them, even Anya later on.

I agree.. he was more of a father figure than a Scoobie. But he was part of the core four, just not a Scoobie.
Once a Scoobie, always a Scoobie.
Okay.. one last point, at the end of season three when 'the gang' go to take out Adam. They have their bonding scene where the Scoobies bond finally. It is Xander, Buffy and Willow. Giles, who has not come down the shaft (okay, that sounded wrong!) was not written into the bonding scene as he was not a Scoobie. It was a yet another Scoobie moment to which Giles played no part.

It was the end of Season Four fool!
I always saw him as part of the core four. I think it's unfair to say he was just part of the library. Wherever Giles was, that was their centre. Season 1- 3, it was the library, four it was his actual home, five the Magic Box and later on I guess it became a bit less about him as it was centred around the Summers home, but I think the last two seasons, more so six, became much less about the Scoobies in general which is probably why I like them less.

I think to some extent I see Angel, Oz and Cordelia as all Scoobies on some level or another, they just weren't the core four.

If we were to match up buffys scoobies with the characters from scooby doo , I'm not sure where Gileswould fit in. Willow = velma, xander = shaggy ( not cool enough to be Fred ) , Buffy would have to be Scooby ( lead character/hero) she wouldn't be daphne (if your reading this please get that dodgy film out of your head!) . Daphne would have to be Cordy, which leaves Giles as Fred, which doesn't work.
Not sure who would be scrappy - Angel or Oz ??? Not Oz not fieisty enough
I don't think he is a scooby, he's more of the person at the end of the cartoon who unmasks the villian .

Because of the age thing I can associate with him (I'm one of the more mature fans) and after asking the question about him being a Scoobie, I have to agree that he was/is one. But he was always just on the outside because of his age and responsibility to Buffy as her watcher, he also had loyalties to thw Council and we know that did go well with Buffy when Giles drugged her and took her strength away etc.

Yes Giles was a Scooby, I'm really surprised that anyone should question it. Even Scobro!

Scooby, Scooby Scooby!!!

That is my mature response 🙂

I dont count season one, as that is truncated.. season one and two are one season. That sounds plausible, yeah.. I think that's my answer!
