Is Giles responsible for Dark Willow?

Agreed, Giles counselled Willow against using magick, but she wouldn't listen. Should he not have let Buffy fight because she might end up like Faith?

He trained Buffy and worked with her so why would she turn into Faith?

And Willow was doing major spells, at Giles request - remember how they killed Adam. Asking her to do major spells and then tell her not to do magic is kind of a mixed message at best.

No, I'm saying when Willow was starting out using magick, Giles was concerned about it and Willow waved him off. When Willow got into major magick she was grown and acting of her own free will. Expecting Giles to tell Willow to not use magick at that point because something bad might happen would be like telling Buffy she shouldn't fight because she might end up like Faith.

I don't think he should have told her not to use magic - but since he was relying on her to do spells from the time she was 16, he was responsible for her safety. She resouled Angel in season 2 - very strong magic. He should have at least trained her in meditation and given her a good grounding in the nature of the forces that she manipulated.

In the same way some athleates are better than other, some just have a natural advantage over others

Some athletes are better than other because they work harder. To imply that success in sport is a matter of genetics is downright insulting to every athlete out there. Seriously.

Willow has that. Amy, Tara and Rack all allude to that.

And for every single of those allusions there's like ten or more scenes about Willow doing research or messing up spells or suffering from headaches because she pushed herself too hard. Amy, Tara, Rack, Giles? We haven't seen them taking painkillers, have we? Wanna know why? 'Cause they are nowhere near as hardcore as Will. No, it's only Willow who's willing to push herself so hard that she literally collapses onto the ground with a bleeding nose. It's not a gift, it's not natural advantage, it's just Willow being a badass.

I think you're probably right about Willow but success in sport is a combination of genetics and hard work. There are plenty of talented sports people who get more success with less effort than others.

But genetics CAN have a part, I'm not saying it's THE part, but genetics can be a factor.

There are countless stories from athletes about how someone spotted them playing football/whatever as a child noticed they had a natural advantage to it and encouraged them to train harder, I'm not saying they fell into their talent, but there was still a natural leaning towards it.

It's the exact same way with art, some people are naturally better at drawing if they train that ability they can become great at it, but to deny people can be naturally gifted in certain areas is crazy.

According to a very quick google search there have been 24 basketball players, in total, that have a recorded height of 5'9 or under, they didn't get to decide their height genetics did, the fact that all the rest of the players naturally had a height advantage was down to their genetics.

But Willow was a badass right from the start, from her very first spell, with very little training and very little research. Because she was naturally gifted in it, not like she could do the magic she's doing in season 7 in season 3, there was growth through study, but that doesn't change the fact that Willow was restoring souls with her very first spell with no training and absolutely no practice.

I think saying that Giles should've been more responsible for Willow's magical development is valid up until apoint.

In Season 4, when he's not really part of her life- since she's left highschool, Willow plateau's magic-wise.

She even says this herself, she can't really go any further on her own. (and she's still plenty powerful- see 'Something Blue'- she impresses D'Hofryn with her power)

Then she meets Tara, who teaches her things...uh, magic things, spells and stuff, and its only then that sWillow gets truly powerful.

The joining spell at the end of S4 was a joint effort, it needed Giles, Willow and Xander- it didn't just rely on Willow's 'heavy lifting' powerwise.

For the record I think Willow worked harder than any other spell-caster on the show and was naturally gifted and was a magical badass, no one of these things excludes the others imo. 🙂
