Is it true that Spike was only brought in because the ratings were so low? And then is it true that since they had James Marsters, they couldn't afford Stephanie Romanov so they had Eve instead?

I'm not sure about low ratings, but I do remember reading that the WB specifically requested (or maybe required) that Spike move over to the "Angel" series for Season 5.

I Read Somewhere, That He Was In Season 5 To Replace Charisma Carpenter.

However it played out, it was definitely the network's decision. Apparently it was presented to Joss Whedon as more or less an ultimatum.

I wouldn't be suprised about that. Personally, I think they should have kept Spike dead.
I love him and all, and he makes Angel an even better show, but I think it's ridiculous how they keep letting dead characters come back, and so often.

I read in an interview with Joss that they pretty much said they'd cancel the show if he didn't bring Spike into it.

Wow, I'm surprised to hear this, I always thought Joss had planned to bring Spike back, as a way of getting Buffy viewers to start watching Angel if they weren't already...I also figured that was why there were so many more mentions of the Scoobies in season 5.
