Many of us have noticed that the cover for issue 11 is not done by Jo Chen, but by Jon Foster. Question of whether this change is permanent or not has not been answered yet, but read this blog from Jo's mySpace and you might start to get afraid of the answer.

I've received quite a number of email messages recently regarding my status on the Buffy books and why am I not the cover illustrator for issue 11 of Buffy Season 8, etc. Rather than retype my answer over and over, I'll blog the response.

Due to circumstances beyond my control, I had to take a break from the book. In my stead is my good chum and awesome illustrator, Jon Foster, who has turned in a great illustration for Buffy issue 11. In fact, I wish I'd painted something that great. Check out Jon's illustration work at his website:

When or if I'll be back on Buffy is up to Scott Allie (Dark Horse) and Joss. But don't let my absence distract you from appreciating Jon's wonderful work because wonderful it is.

Thanks for writing, though. It's nice to be missed.

Notice the "When or if I'll be back..."

Who cares? You still get a proper season 8, does it really matter who writes it or who does the cover? =|

Oh no, say it ain't so. Does it matter? Hell yeah, it matters. Just take a look at what they're using for the cover of Angel: After the Fall.

Edit

I don't know if this really adds anything, but Joss responded concerning the subject at Whedonesque.

For the record, Jo told us a long while ago she would have to step away for a while due to previous obligations. We were really lucky to get Jon Foster to step up for this arc, but Jo is fine and coming back atchya for the next one.

Whedonesque : Comments on 14724 : Jo Chen not doing the #11 cover for BtVS Season 8.

i'm with N4H...i adore Jo's covers, and i really hope that she does return some day. i'm not saying that #11's cover isn't good, because it is, but i think i've gotten used to seeing Jo's work every month.

let's just hope that the cover art doesn't turn into something like After The Fall...i'm still annoyed that i can't order the alternative cover for that issue. 🙁

While i don't see what the cover really has to do with anything, it's the story that matters and everything is run by Joss first so it doesn't matter who does it, i see your point, those Angel covers just suck x_X

Sounds like Jo's being gracious and humble. Can't imagine why Scott and Joss wouldn't want Jo back ASAP.

Jon Foster's illustration work looks amazing, IMO. It's hard to judge his Buffy interpretation just based on cover #11. I'm looking forward to seeing more of his stuff.

Looking at his site, as well as his wife's actually, they are amazing artists. I don't know who's in charge of hiring the Angel cover artists.. but yeah, aside from a few covers they look horrible. It does sort of matter, seeing the cover released really excites me, good imaging makes a big difference in the real world.

The season 11 cover does look really good, but I'm tres sad that Jo isn't doing it. Ive become attached to her, her artistry and her covers. And I know it doesn't change whats inside the comic but .::whiny voice::. but I wan't the Jo covers! Hehe. I really do hope she comes back soon...

I think the cover matters almost as much as the story. I want to be excited about the cover. And I love Jo's work.

I think the issue 11 cover is one of the best so far. Not as cool as Jo's last one for ish 10. We love the look on Buffy's face.
