Is Joss Whedon losing his touch?

So while I went to see The Devil Inside, I saw a preview for Joss Whedon's new horror movie

and if I'm being honest, it looks good but it's so generic imo. A typical horror movie imo. So is Joss loosing his touch?

I thought the sci fi elements were really cool, especially the giant 'net' the eagle flew into. I liked the trailer. Even though you don't like it, I don't think you can judge it by the trailer. Anyway, The Avengers is coming out soon, which I think will be awesome, so you can draw your own conclusions from watching it later this year.

Well the concept of Cabin in the Woods was supposed to be "making fun of the classic horror movie with slight sci-fi twist," right? So if you take into account that concept, no. I think he's probably done a great job at it. But I also don't think we can fully judge until we've seen the movie.

Going off previews mean nothing. The previews for Buffy, Firefly, and Dollhouse were less than overwhelming. In fact, it was only do to the internet that I watched any of them and ended up liking them all.

So although the trailer for Cabin in the Woods doesn't particularly grab me, it's not an indication to me that Joss is losing his touch. The only thing that ever made me think that was season 8.
 
Oh, it's movie man. These movies look freakin great. Can't wait.

And as for the Cabin in the Woods being generic:

Maybe if the group of young campers went to the cabin and met a family of mass murderers who were demented due to some form of radiation. But no way this movie is generic...sci-fi elements, zombies(?), and government conspiracies?
 
Different people take away different things from it I suppose. You may not like it, but then again it might (end up being) someone's favourite film. It doesn't mean he's losing his "touch", whatever that may be 🙂
 
Neither of the trailers is really my cup of tea but that's not to say they're not good.
 
I do not think he is losing his touch. He has moved on to different works then Buffy, so of course it will never be the same. Everything he has made and is making is completely different and amazing in their own way. Joss is always adding twists to things that others would not do. So as long as he keeps doing this, he will not have 'lost his touch' in my eyes.

A little irrelevant but...your banner is beautiful.
As for "The Cabin In The Woods," it looks to me pretty much like a modernized version of a couple of "Twilight Zone" episodes from the 60's, which isn't necessarily bad, because they were GREAT stories. As for the "Avengers" trailer, about all that I saw beyond special effects there was Tony Stark's reply to Captain America, and his comment to the third actor to play Bruce Banner within the course of three movies. It's really hard to tell much from what we saw.
 
Here's an idea, how about you see the movie first? The trailer doesn't reflect the quality of the movie...

Anyways, Joss is a little over hyped, IMO. Buffy started off really good, but it stayed on TV too long and got boring (specifically Season 7). Angel was mostly David Greenwalt (which is why it was better than Buffy, IMO). And both Firefly and Dollhouse got cancelled before we could really see if either show was anything special.

I'm still hyped for The Avengers though. And Chris Hemsworth is now in 2 Joss Whedon productions...cool

See, I'm not liking the look of THE AVENGERS so far. It feels too comic-booky, which is an absolutely horrendous place to take a series based on sci-fi realism. This is how things like HEROES, and the X-MEN and SPIDER-MAN films lost their edge. I've got a bad feeling about it.
 
You really can't judge a movie by its trailer. I will be seeing this regardless because I love horror movies.
 
Well judging by the premise of this movie, I won't be seeing it because it doesn't look interesting to me. That's not to say I don't think it could be good; it just doesn't look like something I'd like.

I don't think Joss has really lost his touch as far as writing goes; he's still able to write really unique, interesting works and that is awesome. I do think though that he tries so hard to be different, sometimes, that his brilliant writing gets lost in the plot.
 
I'll definitely watch that...when it airs on t.v.

Joss has fantastic ideas, but he doesn't always execute them properly. However, I'm almost always willing to give his work a chance, because all of his shows have had at least one episode that perfectly captures the essence of television at its best. Even his "not so great" episodes are filled with a few great moments. I find it hard to skip a Buffy episode because there is always something within said episode, that I don't want to miss. Doublemeat Palace isn't one of my favorites, but I love the scene when Anya's talking about plans for her wedding.

So even though Cabin in the Woods looks a little...eh, I know that watching it won't be a complete waste of time. I wasn't into Dollhouse when it first aired, but when I finally sat down and watched the series in it's entirety...I was pleased. Mostly.

Totally agree. A trailer can make a movie look way better than it is, don't do the movie any favours at all, tell the whole story/movie in two minutes and some trailers can't save a movie no matter how it's done. The point is you won't know until you watch the actual movie.

I'll probably watch the movie at some point. Too many people involved that I like. I won't rush though. At first glance not my type of movie.

Er, it is from a comic book. The Avengers, that is. And X-Men, and Spider-Man. I think the comic bookiness actually makes it better. Most comic books are scifi realism. But I guess it's ultimately up to your own opinion (I remember reading one of your posts which said you detested comics or something).

Not detest. They're fun and all. But they're too out there for me and have no place in live action. I like grounded in real world type stuff. The first two SPIDER-MAN and X-MEN (FIRST CLASS and even WOLVERINE as well) films were amazing because they had that. Same with HEROES. Comic books have their place, and should not invade the world of live action.

So what would you define as comic book-y in live action? Like, those drawings in Heroes? (At least I think there were comic-esque drawings in it... it's been a while.) Yeah, I'm not the biggest fan of comics, but I think it adds a nice touch to the movies.
