Is Riley basically a stronger Xander?

On a side note, the new job wasn't military or government, it was privately funded. 🙂

The pertinent conversation went something like tomething like this:

Riley: I quit the government awhile back.

Officer: We're not government. We're Army.

Kind of ambiguous. Are they Army, or are they FORMER Army, currently private contractors (i e mercenaries)? I guess that it could be interpreted either way. But if they WERE mercs, as opposed to regular Army, it would explain how Sam was able to join so easily and within less than a year be equal in rank to Riley. (Buffy: So, you take orders from him? Sam: He wishes.)

But, by Riley's own admission, he "quit the government," which military personnel don't do just because they don't like what they are assigned to do. That STILL makes him a deserter.

Yeah, I always got the feeling they were mercenaries from "As You Were" but I guess it isn't very clear. And yes, he was a deserter, but I can't blame him for it. 🙂
 
I agree, Riley is just an improved Xander, he's an actual action man, and he's obviously packing more than Harris.
