Riley is first and foremost a soldier and an officer, he thinks tactically and would be very uncomfortable with letting anyone into that situation alone. He is neither condescending nor stupid when he offers to go in with her, or urging Buffy to wait for backup. He simply thinks that she should have someone to watch her back. He wasn't trying to shield her nor was he trying to protect her, he was simply trying to improve the tactical situation.
