Is Spike More Popular Than Angel?

Angel was fine before Spike came. It needed no extra flavor. Spike was bought on to help ratings.
 
I personally don't see what anyone is talking about. Yes, they have spent time on his character but I haven't seen the main focus being on him. I heard how defensive everyone was to having Spike come on Angel (heeheehee) before it even started. I think people are LOOKING so hard at it that they have become overly sensitive to his very presence. It only just finished it's first 8 episodes...give it time.

And as far as Buffy goes, I agree that they spent less time on some characters but with a lot of them there wasn't much farther they could go without starting into something new that they couldn't take anywhere with the series ending. I think that in both 6 and 7 you saw quite a bit of Spike but I didn't see it being about him so much as the writers using Spike to make us understand Buffy more. I feel the focus was most always on her. Not him. There were episodes about him yes but only a few were focused purly on him. As with the other cast. Again, I feel that people are being very sensitive most of the time. Spike is a strong character and can't help but call notice to himself. But that doesn't mean it's all about him.

Besides, you can't deny that the things/characters that annoy us always stick out more. Even over the things we like. Don't worry. Angel will get his humanity and the girl so just ride with it. Joss knows what he's doing and no amont of complaining from us is going to change that.
 
I actually agree with you, Rayne. I mean, true, Season 6 was about bringing the darkness out of Buffy and Spike was the only one that could get into that darkness. And Season 7 was about Spike's redemption. That had to happen for his character. It's just that they brought him back that irks me. His character had piece of mind when he died in Chosen. He died saving the world and protecting the woman he loved ... why would you want to ruin something like that by making him an annoying ghost in a law firm? It just got on my nerves a little ...

But I still agree that we're getting our panties in a twist over nothing. 🙂

Ratings equals flavor in my goofy Chas talk. That is what I'm saying...ana8 mentions that the show needed ratings in order not to be cancelled. Well, sassy, saucy, sinfully delcious Spike comes on and guess what S5 is a hit and I do not know about the show's future but it now has a better chance than it ever did before.

Rayne, I do agree with you. Joss knows what he is doing in the long run (or maybe he really doesn't but he has all of us followers convinced he does and that is the really important thing after all) and no matter what we complain about will change that.
 
well Angel wasnt renewed just because of Spike, TheWB also wanted more stand alone episodes and a budget cut...Angels ratings were find if you ask me they were up in the 4s which is good.
 
There are probably alot of Spike storylines because he is new to the show this season and because he was on Buffy and pretty popular.
 
I haven't seen series 5(of Angel) so maybe I shouldn't comment but........ 😱 I'm very happy Spike will be on Angel seeing he is to my mind the best character to come out of either series so far(Okay Snyder was probably better but.....😉 ) ......I'm waiting with heightened senses for the first episode!!::wave::
 
I don't mind Spike's bigger role, I do miss the others, but if it were up to me, they'd change the show's title from "Angel" to "Spike"
 
I like Spike alot too hehe. What a great character! I don't mind his prominence at all.

But seriously, in response to the original question, I don't think Spike is the focus of the show at all. Every scene he has is created by Angel's character directly or indirectly. There is a need for a character like Spike: Someone to contrast Angel's endless brooding. If anything, Spike reinforces Angel's character with every line he speaks. It gives us a great opportunity to reflect that Angel isn't just a 'Vampire with a soul', but is so much more complex than that description. We have Spike filling the role as well, so we we are forced to look deeper at Angel to see what makes him different than Spike, and thereby find a truer essence of his character.

I have always felt it isn't what the characters do that make us love them, it's how well we know and understand those characters. Spike gives us the contrast we need to understand Angel better.
