I think the phrase 'It is better to have loved and lost...' applies to friendship as well. If you lose a friend, at least you've had some good times, some good memories with them.
It's true that some people are more comfortable off alone, but I don't think Faith is one of those people (even if she does describe herself as a loner- see S8 to put a lie to that idea.), she just doesn't know how to keep friends when she has them.
Plus Buffy's friends always come back. 10 Seasons on and she's still got Xander, Willow and Spike. Plus Giles is back from the dead now.
It still goes to show that Buffy isn't actually alone, even if she feels lonely.
